Well, I was responding to a certain post, so I didn't actually answer the original question.

Most people who talk about smarts in dogs are actually talking about tractability. When I speak of smart dogs, I am talking about problem solving ability.

I agree that all lines throw smart dogs. These dogs seem to be smarter than ANY other breed.

My first dog was a local bred dog. He was THE smartest dog I have ever seen. When I say he was smart, I'm talking about a dog who after only a little time spent around a person would go find that person when asked to find them by name only.

That's impressive. Did you have to introduce the person by name first? Or did the dog just pick it up in the conversation?

He just picked up on names on his own.

For what it's worth, you can definitely tweak a puppies potential. The link above is geared to getting service dogs started off right. Considering the time/money/effort that gets sunk into service dogs, it's in their best interest to have the smartest, most trainable dogs.
With my current young dog, I've tried training her partly with the "shaping" method. She's much more likely to try to problem solve, and is a more flexible thinker. I do think she's very smart anyway. A trainer said she's very smart, but always looking for a shortcut. She keeps me on my toes.

Snooty dogs are pretty smart from what I've experienced ...aswell as Bolio. You do have some dogs that just aren't born that bright... However I have had success working with the dog and developing intelligence. The more you exercise their brain...the more skills they posses and they can apply to any situation. Even a naturally intelligent dog needs work. Alot of folks work the body on these dogs...but forget to work the brain. Reputation is key so they can see reward and consequence. I believe that tributes to problem solving aswell. Like example ...dig a hole by the fence...why? Usually boredom. Dog sees he can crawl under It to get out...he does. Once discovered...he's like oh shit! I'm gonna dig my way out from now on lol. There's the reward.

Patrick stuff in General, down from the Bolio mostly stuff I hear are smart dogs (or are so on a higher percentage) But really, It also depends who bred it etc. Again though, anything can be thrown from any line. Folks say the Redboy stuff can be stupid, then maybe this contributes to a game dog. In terms of the dog is stupid it wont stop, even if it knows it aint making the cut. But then again, Im sure the Redboy dogs can be thinkers too. Anyone ?

I\'m sure they will also, but perhaps there\'s a bit of Dumbness in a dog, who keeps going for it even though it aint making the cut. But what is an intelligent dog, sure there\'s different types of intelligence. Hunting Inteligence etc

Hmmmm....A dog "dumb" enough not to quit, but smart enough to know it's behind, figure out why, and do something about it? :p
