just wondering what sum of ur opinions would be if someone was seriously threatening you or your family and your dog stepped up and bit them, but not talking about them biting cuz someones hollaring at you, talking about them biting trying to protect you from being seriously hurt, I would never fault one of mine for protecting me or my family,, ,

As I have stated before, there is a big difference between utter disregard for humans (flat out bites anything near it) and a dog that has the keen instinct to make a wise decision and defend its loved ones. There is also a huge difference between a worked up dog that nips at a handler that is restraining it from getting to another animal and a man hater. A completely human aggressive dog should be culled. These types of dogs are fairly rare but they exist and some people do not do the right thing no matter what they preach. Unprovoked human aggression should NOT be tolerated.

    Regards,

I dont think there is nothing wrong at all with it. If i was walking my dog and i was in danger i would hope my dog would step up and not sit back.

hell my dog steps up and protects me or my family not only will he get a steak dinner but he can sleep in the big bed. big difference like bnd said from just biting and protecting.

I say give the dog a steak. there are situations where aggression is permissable particualry in owner/ handler protection.
    for instance-

D loves everyone... EVERYONE all shades, all sizes, all colors.. completela and total love of people. But one of my favorite times to walk him is 2-3 a.m usually after I get in from the bar on the weekends(yeah im usually pretty buzzed). there are few other people out and he i much more relaxed (there are a ton of dogs in my neighborhood).
This particular night there was this obviously very inebriated group of guys walking down the middle of the street talking loud and cussing. But D was in the grass on the far side of me. I guess they didnt see him... because they were walking and then motionin my direction, stopped looked at me for a moment and then started coming my way. I just barely took notice of them when D casually walked so that he was standing between themm and me. His tail went straight up and perfectly still. His ears perked up and he was on full alert. a deep low growl came out as he jumped and barked at them. He didnt pull to get to them though, the leash never even went tight.

They took the hint and kept moving. I heard in the news the next night that a group of youths age 14-19 were jumping and robbing people in the park that night. I dont know if it was the same kids or not, but thanks to my dog I didnt have to find out.

If he would have actually bitten one of them I dont know... but just to have him show that iniciative was good enough for me. that boy got a big fat T-bone the next night for dinner.

was never saying nothing wrong just lets you know what a great dog you really do have but never put the name with it,,, i think what your dog did
is heroic and wouldn'nt worry about his guarding tendencies, either way u know he luvs ya, i think a dog has a sick sence of ppl,,,strickly my opinion,,
i'd feed him steak for a week,,, i had one just like that ,,kept him 12 or 13 years, when ya have one like that,me personally won't own nothing but,,because of they're extreme loyalty and show of affection towards they owner,My wife works 3-11 last night i said mom be home in a minute ,,my male run around the house wineing and bouncing off the walls,,couldn't wait

nice looking big black dog,,I want a black one to go with my white ones

  9. i also agree with BnD... protecting and flat out biting out of aggression are 2 completely different things... these dogs may not help keep out a burglar but should that burglar try 2 hurt u in any way, then he'll definitely get whats coming to him...

thats what i liked about the first one i owned he'd sit back and wait but when they got close enough and thought something was going on, he ever gotcha it over unless i called him off,, but other than that he'd slepp under the coffee table and someone would walk right passed him,he was dark brindle all over, and could hide almost anywhere,

Well, I had one attack a junkie who broke into my car, and it wasn't easy for me to deal with at all. I'd rather have a dog hold an attacker or intruder at bay, as opposed to all-out flaying someone.

  12. now I'm not an expert, but I guess the common concensus is unprovoked aggression is unacceptable (as it should be regardless of breed IMO)
and most people have said that a "protective" instinct is acceptable but kinda rare in pits (seeing as they weren't bred as guradians like GSDs for example)... don't know if thats true or not. but I have known a multitude of dogs my fav being an adopted "american staff" (though I think he may have been a pit not a staff I don't know what he was for sure other than georgeous and the best damn dog ever)

Anyways that dog Petey was the epidimy of a well rounded, stable awsome dog. He was friendly with people, yet not over the top "wiggly, jumpy want to give kisses rather than listen to moma" type (my pup god love her is the second type). he was a gentleman never jumped on anyone, only kissed if asked or "knew" that certain someone actually liked doggy drool, wouldn't even take food from anyone unless given an "OK" by me. very smart, very obediant dog. and even though when I orignally got him he was hell bent on killing my other dog, I eventually got him to where he was well behaved in public, he would not pull, growl ect. at other dogs, regardless of what the other dog was doing. Now at home though was another story Petey finally befriend my original mystry mutt and they would play but the german rottie I adopted the same day I got Petey, well I NEVER even took a leak with out making sure those two could not get at each other, Petey was constantly posturing and trying to peck a fight with that dog, and though Griffen was a mellow dog, I know Griffen was not afraid of Petey and Griffen thought of himself as an alpha, to watch them two was like seeing some punk teens in school giving dirty looks and wispering back and forth while the teachers back is turned...

Petey the instigator and Griffen the non chalant giant, (actually I think it was Griffens lack of concern that really irritated and set Petey off!)

Petey "Hey you big fluffy p.o.s. you just wait till moms not looking, I'm gona whoop you from here to next tuesday!"

Griffen: "well come get some you scrawny little punk, I'm sooo scared  what are you anyways like a whole 45 lbs, yeah I'm shaking in my collar over here...."

Yet even though Petey definatly had a drive to "peck a fight" and woulda probably been quite "game" if ever given the chance, he seemed to know that such things, well aren't my cup of tea, and therefor, he maintained his composure around other dogs, and once while at a friends their little snippy dog went after him he started to growl I snapped my fingers and he immediantly went behind my leggs rather than do what I know he really wanted to do... he was THAT devoted to me, despite years of breeding to kill his love for me and desire to please me overroad his natural inclination to fight. I have never known a more devoted dog than Petey

But on top of those qualities he had "discression about humans" what I mean by that is Petey knew a bad apple when he met one, and he'd let me know, yet he was subtle, he Never pulled at the leash or anything like that, he would just get this stance that to made the statement: "don't start nothing, won't be nothing" and believe me the few bad apples I ran into read Peteys stance well enough to stay back! He only growled at someone one time, this bad apple was at a friends house and when he went to sit next to me, Petey gave a short low growl and stood up and just stared the dude down, the dude backed off and sat acroos the room, so Petey simply laid back down at my feet with a "humpf" and kept his eye on the guy until he left. (BTW this same guy ripped my friend off that night for 200 bucks)

the only other time Petey showed "aggression" towards a human, was once me and my ex were having a spat, and I said something hatefull then turned to walk away, My ex responed by saying "why you gota be a bitch like that!?" and smacked me bum... hard! Now for the record my ex had slapped my bum playfully probly a hundred times in front of Petey and he never even batted an eyelash... but the one time my ex did this while angry, well that got Petey's attetion!

Petey promptly wheeled around, jumped up and "pushed" my ex backwards with his front feet, to which my ex said "what the hell was that!?!"
I said "I think that was your warning, and I doubt you'll get another"
needless to say me ex never even smacked my bum playfully after that! lol

long story short I think a dog that has the discretion to know when to defend and when not is a great dog in my book! Like the one mentioned earlier that growled at the group of drunks, but didn't go all awol pulling and trying to attack, thats awsome discretion, not only did the dog know the situation called for a "show of support" for it's owner, but it was "discrete" with it's display, giving a simple warning, but with the state of mind to back that warning up, but only if need be. those punks were wise to not push the issue!

If I dog is protective I like the subtle types rather than the over the top types thats for sure! some dogs feel the need to protect which is ok, but go overboard ya know, like with Petey if he had actually attacked my ex and mauled him over that one smack, well IMO that woulda been going too far. but pushing my ex to let him know he was outa line, well that was not only acceptable to me, but very much appreciated!

I guess I like my dogs to have a "speak softly, but carry a big stick" kinda mentality. or more appropriant, be subtle yet have the heart to step up if need be...

however I also think those with discretion are rare (amongst many breeds, not just pits) seems to me far too many dogs are either human aggressive/dangerous for no apparent reason, or at the opposite end are the kind that would give someone kisses while that someone has a gun to your head....

finding that special dog that knows the differance, well it ain't easy, but if you find one hang on to it, cause it could very well save your life.
