Babesia

Discussion in 'Health & Nutrition' started by DogManPakistan, Mar 17, 2012.

  1. I'm sure this topic has been discussed here before. Just wondering if there is an alternative to Mepron for curing babesia. Mepron is a pain in the *** to get around where I am and i'm just wondering if anyone has been successful with something else. Want to be prepared for anything that may come my way. So suggestions and thoughts would be appreciated. Those who have used mepron, just checking what dosage has been given for proven results. Thankyou.

if you google phenamidine or berenil, i have used both...the first one works better i think....babesia takes a lot out of a dog, it's needs a long..long rest if it is to recover, some say they never really recover...good luck.

phill, any dogs that go into the bush or long grass areas will be prone to ticks if they are endemic to the area, a common practise is to control burn the grassland surrounding your kennels, don't go too crazy though...remember wind directions and property etc....human can also get the human version which is tick fever...not a very nice experience, had it twice myself!

Bulldogs & Greyhounds are the two breeds most likely to get Babesia because of the way they are kept & the work they do. Greyhounds get the Canis variety which is easier to treat. Bulldogs get gibsoni which is much harder to treat. Berenil will put both into remission and is fairly easy to obtain. Babesia is here to stay so there is no reason to be alarmed about it. You just need to be prepared to deal with it when it does occur.

Well it's just my opinion. But since babesia is not curable. The best way to treat it is to cull. I myself just wouldnt wana take the chance with it.
