Springpole Question

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by Chief Rocca, Oct 17, 2005.

  1. I built chief a spring pole this past weekend. its nyce and since he always chews on stuffed toys, i tied one up for him to bite on.. hell jump up and bit it but will not hold on.. a couple time hell hold on but will not shake. hell just hang there and keep chopping down it while still in his teeth. LOL.. i dont have it to high.. just about where he can jump up and grab it and still have his back paws o nthe ground when he standing up .. isthis good.? i dont know. he just turned one and i never used a flirt pole on him .. what should i do to show him and teach him to do it right.

try lowering it so hes on the ground more. Does he shake when you play tug-o-war? if so then you have a good chance of getting to do it right i think. he may just need to start closer to the ground he may not be comfortable with hanging that high and thrashing.

  3. yea he goes crazy when playing tug of war.. maybe i should lower more to where hes fully on ground and let him try it then .?? let him get used to it .? hen raise more and more after awhile. ?

you want to start it where ALL 4 FEET are on the ground

yeah, sounds like lowering it a lil would help out in the beginning. tease the hell outta him before you let him get at it. make him want it bad,,then let him at it. keep shakin and pullin on it a bit even after he's got it. he'll get the hang of it from the sound of it! good luck

yep mine shake the most right as their front paws come of the floor like an inch so thats where we start them when teaching them to shake something. start yours where he shakes the most go out and play with him. ours love playing footsie" where they are tugging and you try and grab their paws they have fun trying to twist away or trying to tap their paws with your foot when they are tugging they try to pick them up off the floor and twist they get a kick out of it. but they will start trying to step on your feet to lol when they tug.

  7. hey thanks guyz., im goin to work with him and see where it goes this week .ill keep yall posted and im going to do some video footage as well.

Do you have any other dogs that like the springpole? My 3month old puppy has been watching big sis springpole and one day decided he wanted to also. He just jumped up and got it, and hung with no paws on the ground. Though I had to immediately take it away because I don't want him doing it until he has his adult teeth in. But he learned just from watching... so in your situation I was wondering maybe another dog could 'show' it how?

  9. yea i see what youre saying. but in my case nah chief is the only one.

All 4 feet on the ground and I grab the rope for the first minute or so and pull back....so its me and him playing tug of war. When he's got the the point he's had a good work-out I will take him off and throw it up where he cant get it and only take it down on special occasions....this way its always a treat. Never leave it down, its the equivelent to leaving their dog toys around on the floor.....they will love them to death but if they know they can have it they will eventually leave it alone and go for the new one your hiding on the counter :p

My dog didn't get into it at first nether. I put it up when he was 10 months. He is now 15 months and is just starting to turn on. Shakes it something awful now. Absolutely loves it. Give you re dog time to warm up to it . Also a couple of months can make a big difference. Be patient

  12. ok guys. i dont know if did this right or not..at the end of my spring for the springpole i have a toe rope hanging from it attacht to a stuffed object in which chief bites at.. is this the right way or should i just attacht the object str8 to the bottom of the spring with out a piece of toe rope in between .

the way i have it set up is ..

    1) a latch
    2)steal ring
    3) garage door spring
4)steal ring at the bottom of the spring
    5) and then the toe rope hanging down with the stuffed toy attacht to it.

should i take away the toe rope and just hook the stuffed toy to the spring.?

hope you can understand where im getting at ..

Does the dog like to get the stuffed toy or the rope? Mine only has a long rope bone hanging down and that's what they play with. I'd try it with both, a rope and a toy or stuffed animal. The toy might encourage the dog to use the springpole.

  14. yea it does.. he doesnt chew those chew bons but hell chew raw chicken bones..

the stuffed chew toy is his fav., he chews on any anything stuffed.. stuffed animal. doll.. wutever.

Do you think maybe he isn't getting a good grip on the stuffed animals? It might take a while to figure out that he actually might like the springpole. Like BIG GAME said, his took about 5 months...

You deffinatly want the rope between the spring and the object youre dog is biteing. The stuffed animal is a good idea to get him interested in it but as he shows more intrest you will want to find something more durable for him to bite and pull on. People use all kinds of things for this most popular is probobly a good peace of burlap. I personaly use a rope dog bone tied to the end of the rope that attaches to the spring. DOZER T you also use this huh ,Thought I wa the only one.:)

Keep a fair ammount of rope between the spring and the bite object, you cant always keep them on the ground and they will jump up and bite the spring and lose some hardware ;)

  18. good stuff. thnx yall.. i will keep workin with him til he gets it..

    Springpole is for amateurs.
This is the worst thing that ever was created for this breed!
Top dogmen do NOT condition with springpoles.

This is a dangerous device and odds are you will sooner or later cripple dogs on it.
It does not build the bitting power up in the dog, it weakens it.

How does it weaken the jaw? What would you recommend for strengthening the jaw, neck etc?
