    LEMM ON CONDITIONING

I know I help people condition their dogs, the basic program comes from the two greatest dogs in the world, ART and TUFFY. Both dogs were conditioned exactly the same way, both became 7x winners. I never missed a day of their conditioning for any of their matches when Stinson and Glover owned the dogs. All I've done to change Stinson and Glover's work schedule of the 70's was shorten the work sessions from 30 minutes to 15 minutes to allow the dogs to recover sooner, raise the heart rate to MAXIMUM STRESS and when the dog becomes oxygen deficient he breaks stride sooner. This schedule of work can be accomplished by using a free turning treadmill, easy turning flying jenny or a bicycle. This technique is called free conditioning. Everyone can use this technique to find out the true weight your dog should be with no guessing. I soon learned to know exactly what a dog needs to eat.

The last few years I've been disagreeing with Barney Fife about the best way to condition MAXIMUM STRESS. The Barney writes in the September-October S.D.J. on how to condition a dog, on page 68. Basically it's a running keep like mine, meaning a free conditioning technique. So what was his argument for the past few years. Everything on 68 is too much work for any dog to ever recover, to start the nest day with any reason energy and no one should ever work a dog by a schedule that doesn't change during that day's work. I will explain the difference between a dog that breaks stride and is allowed to recover. Then a dog that can and will run along side a car until Barney thinks it's time to rest, whatever the meaning of rest is. Let me explain what that does to his dog. First of all Barney used the word method of conditioning. What he should write about is scheduling and recovery. These are two basic concepts; people need the real deal. "Roll a dog at least 4 times for 30 minutes", Why? What a waste, no confidence in breeding or conditioning, "gradually reduce a dog's food and walk him to find out his match weight" Why? If you feed the dog the right food he will lose water weight from exercise and still feel good tomorrow. "Do not match for large states." Why not? No confidence?" Gradually increasing work until your dog can run 15 or 20 miles in one work out' Too much work, not enough recovery time. "When your dog can run 20 miles he has reached his peak workout which is one week before the show," What peak? Peak amounts of work or peak condition? Peak amounts of work happened 15 miles back, peak condition will never happen, too much work. "All this one week before the show." What a crock." Two or three days before the show, no work." No work? You spend all this time and hard work to condition the dog 20 miles a day to no work? I don't think anyone should treat an animal that way. People dry a dog because they don't know how to finish a dog at peak condition then progressively cut the work. Everyone should know that you can't peak a dog for a match day and rest too. You peak a dog and then progressively cut back on his work, that's called rest in preparation for the contest. Just think, if Mayfield would have left a small amount of moisture in his dogs, he would have been the best, instead of just thinking he was. I peak a dog's condition three days out, and progressively decrease his work to rest in preparation for the contest and not take on fluids that takes away his breathing. So I won't have to take away his water, so he can stay at MAXIMUM STRESS longer, because he has a conditioned amount of moisture to keep him cooler longer. If you take away his water, he will go into shock sooner and stay in shock longer. To dry a dog is to slow the blood flow by two thirds, meaning two thirds less oxygen to the brain stem.

I like to give my dog a lot of rest during eight weeks of conditioning; 15 or 20 minutes a day." Feed once a day using one or two cups of premium dry dog food like Purina Pro Plan Performance, Science Diet or Eukanuba". My dog would starve to death feeding Pro Plan or Eukanuba. Science diet is to hot on a dog's kidneys plus 20 miles a day and he's sure to dehydrate. Just waste away with good health. "Add 4 to 8 oz of calf's liver to two cups of dry food". 8 oz of calf's liver? hell any dog would starve to death. I can't believe Barney has ever worked a dog as hard as he wants someone else to work a dog on that small amount of food. Liver is a poor source of protein. That diet and work schedule could not have won 50 matches for him, unless he balanced the scales with mallard ducks.

As seen through the eyes of the Millmaker......

Use to love the old MILLMAKER vs BARNEY FIFE disputes back and forth, they would have ate this internet shit up,lol...
A big fan of the late great BARNEY FIFE,simple practices he stood by that developed his fifty win five loss record.
The Millmaker never really matched a dog (similar to Cali Jack),but seemed to know it all...
Anyone know of anyones results that used his keep,I see counting the dogs heartbeat can maximize a workout.
Just never heard of anyone doing it???

I Got the mill maker a couple of levels higher then Barney Fife ever was... Bij the way the hearth beat counting thing was his way of cheking recuvery time. there are diferend ways of hekking recuvery time. our keep had simulair things in it that R lemm had in his.

Anytime you work one you can tell when there heart rate is up. When they down shift from 5th to 4th gear then from that point the trick is getting the heart rate to drop back to normal as quick as possible therefore recovering and learning to stay on there feet moving forward. I have never used it with the mill he recommends but I have used it and it worked well, hard to get them all to set there own schedule.

I always deemed Robert's keep a decent one but for one thing. He would work them up to and including the very last day. I'd NEVER want to see one brought in without a couple of days or three of just rest and light walking to have strength going in.

As far as Barney goes, he saw one I let a friend use and he used my keep, and Barney asked for the keep. We gave him a few things of what we did but not my keep. I always found Barney to be a good sport.

But back to Robert. I always thought he was a good technician in a keep. Just never agreed with those last few days of hard work.

Everyone had different methods for different dogs for obvious reasons. I always believed in rest ,proper weight, checking their feet, with just plain good old common sense. I have seen so many dogs look better off the chain then a bunch that was over conditioned . The owner would always say I don't understand he looked better off the chain, thats because you took everything out of the dog by over working him.

Both were good But I also thought Lemm was a little better. Barney was a very good guy and would help u with your dog with after a show care. Barney was a pretty good around dogman though.I liked them going back and forth in SDJ. The articles with Lemm and Mayfield going back and forth were pretty good also

altho Barney fife came along as a gentalman in magazines. he actualy turned into a con and cheat. and wasend a good breeder, and jumpt from one band wagon onto the necst one with populair bloodlines . nor was he a realy good conditioner in my eyes. But that comes tru some up close personal stuf involving him and other close frinds.. Lemm in his SDJ battles with Barney fife was absolutly spot on about conditioning.

He really was:) even about the heart rate, its a great way to check if an athlete is overtrained.professional athletes have been using heart rate and recovery training for years:)

Professional athletes also work out multiple hours a day. Lemm really had no idea what a dog's body is capable of. No one did back then. You can work your dog the way Lemm said, and your dog will be in decent shape. The same can be said for basically every keep out there. The question you have to ask yourself is if you want your dog in decent shape, or do you want to shoot for the best shape you can possibly bring the dog in at. IF that is just decent for you, you have work to do.

Im sure you got BARNEY mixed up with his brother ST.BENIDECT.They started out together and Barney won with alot of the dogs they aquired.Later in BARNEYS career he flew solo conditioning dogs for people as well as selling his keep.He was known to always ask how a dog was conditioned whether he was impressed or not he was always interested in being the best.Like an old mentor i had he,Barney felt most of his losses were due to his errors making sure not to repeat them again. His biggest atribute was learning from others mistakes...
Yeah the millmakers keep sounded extreme,my only problem is the record behind it that dont exist.Stinson & co
did all the matching and didnt use the keep millmaker was pushing with his mills...

The best way to learn and the only short cut that works. Is go and stay with a dogman(that u trust) and work a dog or two with him to learn .Hands on is the best teacher.

Nop his brother was of the worced kind. can tel a thing ore two bout him as wel but i will not. Im stearing away from the lemm conditioning topic with this post so moderaters feel free to split this topic.. As it is Barney fife Sold the sarah bitch out of Don Divines CH Bruce(son of Boomerang) x Brewers rosy( sister to Zebo/Vidicator) To my frind BvH from STB(europe). she was bred bij Redicks grch peterbuild... later Barney fife came over and showed her into LK tug rom where sarah lost. As it is sarah produced the STB Dylan dog a awesome dog and more then great producer.

Barney fife didnt think much of it later on. as Peterbuild was known as a lousy producer at the time. As it is STB BvH. send a inbred Dylan male pup to Barney Fife called Raleigh ONLINE PEDIGREES :: [23419] :: ST. BENEDICT'S RALEIGH j who people rated as probely the gamest diog that ever lived back then . Raleigh was send as a pup just to show of how good Dylan was as a producer. coinsedense had it that my wife to be, back then was meeting up with that males sister Called snooty. The bitch my wife had was called CH Ukkie ONLINE PEDIGREES :: [436444] :: GIANT'S UKKIE
Barney fife could NOT belive wat he saw and started to breed of off raleigh. and said he NEVER seen dogs of this caliber and durabilety like this in his LIFE. This raleigh dog had to move yards every 3 to 4 weeks, as he wassend a sight to see.

finnaly reolising and reconising how great STB Dylan was as a produced . HE BARNEY FIFE came up with a scam.
StB BvH former parder was send to Bvh to conn him out of a 11 year old Dylan who was a house dog.
BvH former pardner cam up with the ecscuse that he was divorsed of his wife and feld lonly at home afther work.
and he askt Bvh if he could take him as a soul mate and pet.
Ben reluctend agreed. but sins Dylan was close and ben could breed with him he feld comferteble with it.
Needless to say that Dylan was on the airplain two days later!!. And Barney Fife started a campeighn to change his pedigree being out of jacksons warp!! . because Peterbuild did not and would not SELL .
The plan was to breed Dylans ball of and make a ton of money. Dumb ass put a 11 year old HOUSE dog on the chain in mid winter.
He froze to death within days!....

Barney fife forgot one thing and that was that I had the origenal telegram from 1982 where the truth from that breeding was in. from a time long befor computers cell phones and internet.
Barney fife also stated that a man could live from 1 hamburger a day and one pack of frensh frites.... His conditioning methods wher pure strenght training and wassend nearly as sucsesfull as people might think.
Now """"Show me one man who said barney fife was not a conn and a cheat and IL SHOW YOU A LIAR!!!!!!". Origenal Telegram included above . wich was used with my permission to be used in the SDJ to make it clear how STB Dylan was bred.
