Dog allegedly attacks three people in Muskegon

[IMG] (Update, Muskegon, October 6, 2005, 5:00 p.m.) Muskegon police will be back in a neighborhood where they say a dog attacked three people Wednesday night.

Madeline Burt moved into her home on Catawba Avenue earlier this week and she's already got the scars to prove it. She didn't want us to show her face, but she did let us tape her bandaged ankle after a neighbor's dog took a bite out of it. "Yeah, I got puncture wounds and a gash," she said.

That's after a dog went on the attack in a Muskegon neighborhood. Burt was one of three people who ended up in the hospital. It happened just before 7 p.m. Wednesday night. Witnesses say the canine chased down a group of about a dozen kids before biting two 13-year-olds as well as Burt.

The injuries are not serious, but people along Catawba Avenue say the scars aren't just physical. They're also emotional. They say the dog terrorizes the whole neighborhood. Cassandra Cooper fears for the kids in the area - and for her own safety. She says she'll take a detour out of her neighborhood if she sees the dog out.

We asked the dog's owner, Inez Johnson, what happened. She wasn't home at the time of the attack but said the dog only chased the kids.

Alicia Grider had plenty to say after a run-in with the dog. She said she opened her door to help kids get away from the animal, when the dog followed them into her house. Grider feared for her three-year-old son Alante. He was not hurt.

Witnesses aren't sure of the dog's breed, but believe the animal is a boxer. Muskegon police say they called Animal Control to pick the dog up, but since the owners already took the canine home, their officers would follow up Thursday.

Animal Control says the dog, whose shots are up to date, is in quarantine, which means it is still at its home but restricted to its property. The dog's owner is willing to give up it up to Animal Control, who will pick it up Friday.

No charges have been filed from the prosecutor as of yet.

This isn't the first time the dog has caused trouble. Muskegon County Health Department Director Ken Kraus tells 24 Hour News 8 that the dog bit a child in the arm in June. At that time, the dog was placed in quarantine for ten days to monitor for rabies. Animal Control was also at the dog's home after there complaints that the animal was running loose in the neighborhood in April and August.

While I'm sad that this happened, I'm amazed at several things: 1. that since it's not a "viscious pit bull attack" it's just an "alleged" attack 2. the dog has a history of biting people & running at large yet the owner was still allowed to keep it without paying the price 3. the dog is allowed to be under home quarantine (yeah right, she hasn't kept it contained before, why start now?)

Again, not a pit bull attack, so let's not make a big deal out of it. Ok, 8 sentences, that should do it.

You're right sir. Since your child wasn't attacked by a pit bull, he will get no justice. You will just have to shut up & deal with it.

Damn those viscious pit bulls. As we all know, it's the dog's fault, not man's fault.

LOL! Actually, with several people on this board keeping statistics, I just try to help them out as knowing our facts will help us all out in this time of trial.
