Pit Bulls as Therapy dogs.

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by Martin_Pit_Bulls, Sep 24, 2005.

  1. I own Martin Pit Bulls Kennels. All of the dogs I own perform therapy work in some way to help the handicapped, the elderly, children, and people who have a general fear of dogs. For the handicapped, the dogs help to encourage people with mental or physical disability to use their muscles or minds without thinking or feeling that they are working. The elderly benifit because some nursing homes don't allow pets so they are able to spend some time with a gentle animal that loves their company and attention. For children who are so impressionable, I bring my dogs to schools and teach the children about the REAL pit bull by showing them how pit bulls can be calm and well trained companions by having my dog sit quietly while I read a book to the class. For people who just fear dogs, I take my pit bulls ("the most feared of all dogs") and show them their intellegence and gentle nature by demonstrating the many tricks I have taught them. People tend to associate animal intelligence and friendliness by the amount of tricks they know.

I have helped to change the minds of many people who fear pit bulls over the years. I would like to know how everyone feels about my way of helping to change the pit bulls bad name. I would like to hear your stories also.

Keep up the good work, Melissa. I myself, have an APBT that use to assist my grammy, who had Alzheimers. So, I know first hand also, what good they are to everyone. I now train them for Law Enforcement purposes. Very smart breed, these dogs. I was on the Discovery Channel site, for Animal Cops and I was constintly arguing with certain persons there, about the breed. So, this shows much improvement and caring. May I ask, where are you located? Thanks--MISSY.
