Im in Kansas and it's been around 100 degrees the past few weeks. Ive been kind of nervous to work my male in this heat. Does anybody work their dogs in this kind of heat?

in the evening, I run the dog by a lake and have it cool off a few times while working.

  4. I don't know how long you have been in the game, but to do it in the heat and keep it safe takes a a lot of knowledge. I have seen a couple guys lose dogs from over doing it in the heat. There is one time that comes to mind a friend's dog suffered heat stroke while hog hunting. I put two bags of fluid in the dog over a couple hours, and she still did not make it. The heat is probably the most dangerous thing for our dogs, and since they do not cool like we do the heat is much more detrimental to them. Unless you really know what you are doing I do not advise it.

can't let a little heat bother you. find information about the affects of heat stroke & before you start a keep bring dog to vet & make sure it 100% to work. whatever time westminster is work around the same time.

If you don't have the experience to jude the dogs limitations in the heat don't work your dog in the heat. It can be done before sunup or after sundown but in tepms. exceeding 100 and high humidity you can still ruin or kill your dog. The dog can become acclimated to working in the heat to some degree over time and careful guidance however if you do not have the experience to know the dogs limitations before you reach them then it is better to not push the dog in the heat. If you exceed the dogs limitations before you notice you have a problem then it is to late. There is no reason important enough to overwork a dog in the heat and risk loosing the dog to heat stroke other than pure ignorance.

You call 100 degrees a little heat? LMAO I guess HOT for you is like 120 degrees huh? LMAO....... Vet?, westminster? LOL

  11. Let me add that a dog dying of heat stroke is no pretty thing. If you've ever seen it, you wouldn't want to see it again.

Don't work dogs in this kind of heat unless you're working inside. Very early in the morning, or even at night isn't exactly 100% safe, but obviously safer than the sun pounding down on the dog.

you can overwork a dog in 70 degree weather. what do you think guys in az,nm,fl,tx do call it quits jun/sep when there's 100 degree days 4 day out the week. or maybe wate till spring? gtfo with that crazy talking. if you cant work with the situation at hand then you probably have no business working a dog. it ain't hard to find a shade tree & work under it springpole, jenny, slat, flirt ain't hard to fit under good shade & keep the dog inside when it ain't working. you can bet the house guys are working there yard year round no matter the situation.

i no wat your saying ben but most have a spot under shade like u said and some even work them in the house, or do the early morning or after sun down. most aint gonna work one with a slat at twelve noon directly under the sun shade is the key

  14. Boogie put it best you do not want see that losing a dog from heat stroke is a thing you will never forget. It is violent and painful, and your dog knows it dying. When my friend lost his dog to heat stroke it broke everybodies heart there, there is nothing worse than losing a good dog to stupidity, but I guarantee he never will again.

in this heat when i put him on the treadmill i aim the fan directlly on his sides. he doesnt over heat that way and i also walk at night...

  17. Ben I work my dogs in the heat too. Why? Cuz I know what the fuck I'm doing and I have water and a hose available at all times and keep them as cool as possible. No offense to the OP, but if you're here asking then you inexperience shows and could be deadly for your dog.

Ben to direct somebody who doesn't know wtf they are doing when it comes to working in the heat to do so is wreckless and irresponsible. I know you don't give 2 flying shits about their dog, but they more than likely do.

Thanks for all the input. And yes Im just getting started in all this so I would say I am inexperienced and am probly gonna save outdoor work for cooler days.

Over work? LOL OP asking about the heat/temperature not about over working thats two different things LOL. Who said anything about guys in hot climates calling it quits jun/sept or waiting till spring? or keeps, or vets, or wistminster? LMAO

Im working one roght now in south east Texas heat...I work at around 10:30pm....mill and hand work...i only let her run the mill for about 5 minutes before i cool her off with a hose. I start at the feet and work up to the flank...then back to the mill. The last hour is a good slow walk and rub down...Work with your common sence and you shouldnt have a problem.... Heat index was 108 today. Its 1:15 now and i started at 10
