Many dogs were without shelter, some chained to trees.

One by one, 15 pit bulls were led from the windswept woods and into dog crates Monday.

The canines were plucked from a piece of land off Tolgate Road in Warwick. "They were kept outside, so it wasn't adequate conditions for them, seeing they don't have much hair," said Ann Corvin of the city's animal shelter.

"I understand some of the dogs were chained to trees and not necessarily having shelter, others were chained to shelters. I was horrified, it was incredulous that anything like that could happen," added City Council President Bruce Place.

Place said constituents alerted him to a possible problem late last week and he after the weekend blizzard he dropped a dime to police. On Monday afternoon police and animal control officers acted.

The dog’s owner, identified by police as Clifford Dennis, was seen confronting officers, at one point yelling, "You’re stealing my dogs." All 15 are now at the city's animal shelter and the director says they're in good health and will most likely go up for adoption.

For city councilor Place, this is how government can do well. "It's been a nice Christmas for me because I know 15 animals are alive today because we took some action."

Workers at the shelter say the dogs did not appear to be sick.

  2. The red dog in that pic looks quite healthy to me!I've dealt with these type of people before(Humaniacs)and somehow in their simple minds, they feel if a dog doesnt have a nice FANCY house then he dont have one at all.Whether a dog is tethered to a tree or an axle in the ground doesnt matter as long as he cant get tangled, has access to feed and water and has ample room to run.The news people tell half truths and edit things the way they want.In all fairness,i didnt look at the above listed news clips for i am sick of hearing and seeing their PROPAGANDA!! All of the dogs in the video looked more than healthy. Plenty of fat on them to help keep them warm. Who cares what they were chained to as long as it didn't pose a threat to them.

I guess he was pissed when they just take his dogs. Now why didn't they show the yard. The lady said that hopefully all the dogs can be adopted out, that they seem to be nice dogs. They are already adopting out his dogs ,before he is even charged. What happens to the dogs that don't get adopted out?DEAD thats what. The dogs looked healthy and by their own statements the dogs was healthy.

A man accused of leaving 15 dogs outside in blizzard conditions went to the police and to an animal shelter Tuesday to try to get them back.

Police and animal control officers rescued the pit bulls from some woods off Tollgate Road in Warwick on Monday. Police said some of the dogs were chained to dog houses, others were not.

Police identified the dogs' owner as Clifford Dennis, who was caught on camera confronting police. At one point Dennis yelled, "You're stealing my dogs."

Warwick City Council President Bruce Place said constituents alerted him to the problem and that he had police intervene.

"It's been a nice Christmas for me because I know 15 animals are alive today because we took some action," Place said.

The dogs are OK and are being cared for at the Warwick Animal Shelter. The director of the shelter said the dogs are warm and that they are eating and drinking water.

No charges have been filed yet against the dogs' owner. Police are in the process of getting a specific list of city ordinances he may have broken.
The dogs will stay at the shelter for the short term and then go up for adoption.

WARWICK, R.I. - - With about 12 inches of snow on the ground and a whipping wind, animal control officers and the Warwick police Monday rescued 15 pit bulls from the woods off Tollgate Road.

The police found the dogs spread out over 4 acres near an abandoned house at 409 Tollgate Rd., near Kent Hospital, each tethered to the ground by six-foot tow chains that weighed 25 pounds and a tiny dog house with some hay, according to Sgt. Robert Rocco of the Warwick police.

Rocco said the dogs belong to Clifford Dennis, 47, whose last known address was 66 Potowomut Rd., Warwick. Rocco said Dennis did not have the special permit required to have more than three dogs in the city. He had no paperwork to prove the dogs had been vaccinated for rabies, as required, Rocco said.

Although the animals appeared to be in good shape, no one appeared to have been to see them for at least a day judging from the lack of tracks in the snow, according to Rocco. There was no food or water near any of the dog houses, Rocco said.

"Obviously with weather situation they did not have adequate shelter," Rocco said.

Rocco said there was "absolutely no indication the pit bulls were fighting dogs."

There were no scars and no evidence of training materials, he said. It appears Dennis was breeding the dogs. Most of them appeared to be older dogs, but four of them were puppies between 8 and 10 months old.

"That concerned us. It indicated he had more dogs than last time. He was either breeding them or taking in new dogs," Rocco said. He said that police had cited Dennis in the past for having several unvaccinated dogs.

Rocco said the dogs were seized under an ordinance passed in 2009 that prohibits animals from being kept outside without food, water or shelter. The ordinance was sponsored by City Council member Joseph Solomon.

Police and animal control officers learned of the dogs after an anonymous person tipped off Warwick Council President Bruce Place.

Solomon said he is glad that the ordinance helped the pit bulls.

"At least there was positive fallout relative to the work we did," Solomon said. "These animals don't have anybody to speak on their behalf."

Solomon introduced the ordinance after he heard that a dog had been left outside day and night in the winter and froze to death.

"That poor animal. That was terrible. Luckily that incident didn't repeat itself," Solomon said.

Dennis has not been charged in connection to the incident.

The pit bulls were taken to the Warwick animal shelter. The shelter is attempting to find homes for the dogs, Rocco said.

    he may have broken?!

those dogs were fat and happy and from the short shot where they accidentally showed one of the houses the shelter looked fine. hell, with the condition they were in, they looked like house dogs.

they had nothing on him and are now scrambling to try and put something on him. the only problem i see with this is if he had them on public/government property.

that sounds a lot different than the shit the spouted off earlier. They had shelter and insulation. These people stole this man's property.

  17. I volunteer at the shelter where these dogs are being kept. I don't know any more about this story than you guys really except that this guy has been supplying a steady stream of dogs to the shelter for years. I guess if they don't sell, I don't know he normally voluntarily turns them over. Sometimes big lots of them (it is a small shelter) and they have to scramble to get them all fostered. Second, a lot of these dogs, while sweet, have pretty serious issues from lack of socialization. I worked with two who were afraid of everything and everyone from living for years chained outside alone. They squealed in fright walking past a rustling branch. Third this was a blizzard. It buried my car completely. It easily could have buried a dog house or a chained dog. Finally, the dogs will not be put to sleep. I will be working to socialize and train them and this guy will just get some more dogs to make lots of easy money for himself, and we will continue to put our time, donations, and tax money towards cleaning up after him.

The dog I seen in the pic looked fine, nothing wrong with chaining a dog,I wished you people would learn that. But if I got everything I wished there would be less dog theives,I mean shelter workers, lol I really get tired of hearing about you guys stealing people's property.

That's a good question, why is a humaniac on this board?I tell you why,it's because they're always lurking around on dog and hunting forums trying to screw someone over.
