raw feeding percentages and schedule

Discussion in 'Health & Nutrition' started by sleepybuddah, Dec 21, 2010.

  1. I'm doing some research on raw feeding because its healthier, less shit and less smell. So I found this

for raw it's a basic of trying to get the whole blend.
    The percentages for dogs are,
    65% muscle meat
    20% bone
    10% heart
    5% liver

If I'm going to switch to raw feeding and cut out kibble completely, how do I know what percentages are in what and how often my dog needs each? I think someone said heart is a muscle meat too so thats out the question. As for liver, only feed a few times a week right? Can I feed my dog like this, 1 whole chicken with insides monday, 1 whole rabbit tuesday, and so on and put it on a weekly schedule? That makes it much easier than to do than to randomly feed what meat I have. Anyone have some kind of schedule?

Feed ur dog 2 to 3 percent of his body weight!...u don't need to feed a whole chicken!...lol...2 lb of raw should do him just fine!

  3. Yea I know lol. Just saying for example because you need bones, organs, and meat. I found alot of threads on this and think I know what to do now.

  4. Well what I'm kinda trying to say is if I feed 2 to 3 percent of my dogs body weight each day in chicken breast, chicken legs, or in a whole rabbit or some other type of meat, will that be good enough nutrition for the day? Why do people use oil also?

It's 65% boned meat (sp). That includes chicken legs, backs and lamb necks for example.

I give them fruits and veggies for vitamins and fiber. Nothing wrong in adding 10% veggies and fruits on their diet.

i meant they don't need fruits and veggies. sure, it's nice to add them on occasion if you like, but it's not necessary to good health.

Here is a sample of one of my daily meals for a 40lb dog:

    1 raw chicken quarter w/bone
    4oz raw beef liver
    1 soft boiled egg
1 cup chopped up baby spinach (nuked for 1 min)
    1/2 apple chopped up
1 fish oil cap (1000 mg)
    1/2 serving Nupro
    2 cups water

Sorry if I'm hijacking your post. I didn't want to start another on basically the same subject. My question is I'm also thinking of switching to raw and wanted to know how many pounds a month does it take to feed a 56lbs bitch? I just found a meat market in my neighborhood that sells wholesale packages of meat and I'm trying to compared the price of kibble to so many pounds of meat.

just a guess out of the top of my head but at least 41 lbs a month.
Make sure you get al the right products, not just meat ;)

  15. For the raw meat and bones part of the meal, can I use mainly chicken as my meat source like feeding chicken with bones 5 times a week or something? Chicken is really cheap. Then on the days I'm not feeding chicken I can switch to something different like beef, lamb, duck, rabbit or something? If chicken doesn't have enough fat I can supplement with lard or some other source of fat.

  16. What if I just feed kibble on those days?

  17. does it really reduce the amount of fecal matter?
dam that is always a plus in my book!

it is normally figured at 2% of the dogs weight...and of that 2% the split is 60% meats and 40% veggies...if you have only one or two or a few dogs raw is the way to go..it is much better for the dog and much cheaper than quality feed....you can feed a solid raw meal for about $0.60to0.75 per pound...even the cheapest hunting dog formulas are a lil higher than that...this is what i feed per dog...and of course some dogs get a little more and some a little less based on their individuality...

    1 leg quarter
    2 half boiled eggs
1 cup of brown rice (bolied/cooled/boiled the 2nd time)
    one half daily vitamin.
    mounded tablespoon of lard
    two tablespoon od greens (collards/turnip)

the meats change with prices.. i feed a lot of chicken backs and chicken necks...some days there is no mix just meats....it is not the ideal or perfectly made raw diet but it is cheaper and better than kibble...but a lot more work....US1
