Do you think that there should be an age limit for owning an APBT?

The title pretty much says it all, but to be a bit more precise, do you think that you should have to be over a certain age to own a bulldog, or should you be allowed own one as long he is able to control the dog?

The last thing we need is another unenforceable law or excuse for the government to control something in our lives.

We have a limit of 18 in most of our country, if there is one on the property when it is in public it must be handled by someone 18 or older.

Whats wrong with that? most 16 year old kids wouldnt know how to handle a gamebred dog if it wanted to go another dog in public nor would they know or have the skills to seperate the dogs if an incident happened.

People need to realise that when it comes to these dogs they are not for everyone, sure they are fine with kids ect but it wont help a youngster when the dog decides the poodle accross the road is lunch.

well i actually think the last thing we need is a dickhead owner of a high drive animal letting a kid who cant handle an animal in the proper manner.

i am against any laws that can be classed as bsl related but the last two attacks in my country were caused by idiot owners and handlers being of little experience, that spotlight wouldnt have been lit back up if the owner took the dogs himself.

It happens all the time, we are at the stage where we want less laws regarding these dogs but use your brain , the dogs cop the shit and the owner not the kid up the road walking a apbt because its cool.

As long as they can handle the dog in a sticky situation then they should be able to have one no matter what age.

dickhead owners are annoying but they are far from the worst. We can have dickheads punished for poor behavior but its mighty hard to come back from a dominating government.

An age limit is a pretty retarded idea as long as they can handle the dog and are mature and responsible enough to care for the animal and dont do some stupid shit then i dont see a problem i see alot of folks over 30 who dont need the damn dogs but they got em age isnt the factor its maturity and knowledge of the breed

People should be free to do what they want, living with the consequences that follow their choices.

Obviously there cannot be an age limit... because i can buy my son who cant even shit in the potty a dog... doesnt mean he is responsible for it lol

"Who would be silly enough to give a child an apbt?" hell that's the best time to start around 8-10. depends on the situation though.

i think that putting an age restrictions own owning a dog is only giving the government more ammo for the restriction as a whole yes there are 16 yrs old but then theres 30 yr olds that cant handle it like previously stated. i owned my first APBT at 15 i found it running around the street (Washington D.C) my mother told me if i wanted her then id have to take complete and total responsibility of her and man i loved Scout and she was a handful but at 15 i was mature enough to be able to own her and she grew to be a productive part of dog society.....ultimately we don't need to watch what age we give our pride and joys out too....but what kind of person they are

Not really i got my first bulldog when i was 15 but of course i was superviced by my old man ever since then its been a wrap. And he had the dogs for about 10 plus years soo i think a long as u have some one that knows around u u cant go wrong if not wait till at least 20.

I started handling my own pit bull mutt when I was 11 years old, walking and caring for him etc...He was 70 lbs, weighed just a little bit less than me and was dog aggressive. I was mature enough to handle him as good as any adult, and he never got into a fight during my care or injured another animal. Had quite a few loose dogs run at us over the years, but nothing ever happened because I made sure to prevent it and run the dog off. The only fight he got into in public was when he was being walked by a grown man ;)

Hell, my parents made me handle the dog at the veterinarian's office whenever he needed to go in because they could not physically control him. However, most children that age are not prepared to handle the breed...though in the ideal world I believe it should be monitored by parents. I'd be pissed if I couldn't walk my own dog until I was 18! (I am 19 now) I know I was ready to care for the breed many, many years before that age.

I agree with the first response that we don't need more government regulation controling our lives, but at the same time if it helps keep our dogs legal for longer I wouldn't necessarily be against it. I'm pretty sure that most people arrested for participating in illegal activities are not kids, but most kids aren't responsible enough to own an animal that can inflict the type of damage a hot bulldog can. I guess it is obvious I am straddling the fence on this topic, but as adults we need to take responsibility for our kids. If they are mature enough and know what they are doing I have no problem with it. But if the kid isn't then you should use common sense. Take it upon yourself to teach them, make it a family affair, and they should be alright. Don't let neighborhood punks do the teaching for you. Also, it just occured to me that I have seen on shows like Animal Cops (Detroit I think) where the ACO's have said that kids under 16 or 18 aren't legally allowed to own them, so it may already be going on in some areas of this country as well.

Not only be under control of the dog, but be responsible for its actions.

Age matters nothing in both things, I know some 12 year olds that handle dogs and front up with a responsible attitude if TSHTF than many spineless adults tuck tail and run.
