questions about spaying

Discussion in 'Health & Nutrition' started by CAPSULECORP, Dec 6, 2010.

  1. So my Apbt/ Leopard cross is getting spayed in the next hour due to whats most likely pyometra.
Is this going to change my bitches personality or behavior in anyway? I don't always trust conventional wisdom especially with all the misinformation on the apbt. SoI figure the best way is to get info from real people on the forums that deal with these incredible dogs, does spaying your bulldog change it in anyway other than the lack of ability to get pregnant?

  2. how old is she? if shes young she mite stay a little puppyfied. shell lose some drive :/

  3. Shes an adult, I know spaying them as pups can cause physical defects and such. I had no choice in the matter I had to spay her as much as it pains me, Pyometra is no joke...
I just hope it doesn't alter her drive and YES aggression.
I like the pitbull being a gladiator, I'm well aware that they love to fight and I'm a responsible owner you know...
I love my dog the way she is, I hope she stays the same.

spaying didn't affect the APBT bitch i had (i gave her to a friend). she's still wild and full of drive to this day. a little fatter, but that's my friend's fault, lol

I had a bitch i used as a hog dog.I got her spayed around the age of 2 1/2 or 3.Never effected her drive, attitude,or personality. But she would put on weight easier.

If they're already started they will stay the same, if done as a pup, they may never start.

  8. I feel a lot better now because honestly, it'd be a tragedy to rob her of that apbt aura, the never give up attitude. Taking that away is like taking away ones soul.

In my experience, it just depends on the dog. One adult male we had neutered didn't change at all. He would still mount gyps, run off, and get into scrapes. I had a female Catahoula Cur that I hog hunted with spayed at 6 months and she still turned out to be a fine hog dog. The one common thing I've noticed is their tendency to gain weight, especially the females. The vet insists that getting them fixed was not the cause. But almost every dog I've been around that was spayed/neutered had this issue.

The vets always have told me "if you spay or neuter your dog he/she
will be alot more calm and wont be as agressive towards other dogs.
Unfortunaly my dog FATTY GIRL caught pyometra and had to get spayed.
She has not changed one bit.

No reason to worry about a spayed/neutered animal gaining weight.
The weight gain "problem" is easily controlled by adjusting the dog's food accordingly (if it even happens).

I have a spayed bitch, she's a lot more relaxed now around the house and shit, but when we go out in the woods its a different story
