Female That Eats Her Pups

A bad mother is a bad mother end of story. I had a bitch she eat her first litter at four weeks old I tried her for a second time she did the same again only she eat them as they were been born. get rid of the bitch and get yourself another one, someone here said only let her see them twice a day and remove them after they feed this is probley the best idea. Or do u know some1 with a bitch on pups and u could use her as a segregate.ffice/><O:p></O:p>

 

I had a buddy that had a bitch, she did that 3 times... Out of 4 breedings she ate 3 litters and the fouth he ended up with 3 pups, personally, I would not deal with that...

 

LOL i wouldn't have bothered after the second litter.

Can you hand raise pups from birth? I guessi t would be very time consuming

 

A female will eat pups sometimes if the pups are dead. I only had a canario(sp) that did that though.

 

So I would have to agree with the hand rearing yes time consuming but worth saving the pups...

 

A dog might eat pups for several reasons.Some might eat sickly or dead pups,it might be a nutrition problom and some mother dogs are just crazy and horrible mothers and kill pups.I've had a couple dogs before that would eat any pup that acted sickly.I had one female one time that gutted a pup while chewing the cord off it's belly.That was an accident though.I've had mother dogs that would step all over the pups and squash them,some dogs just aren't good mothers. My mother had a little Jack Russell once that would eat all her pups for no apperant reason. If I was you I would seperate the pups from the mother,put them back with her 2 or 3 times a day to feed while you supervise and then take them back out. Good luck with the rest of the pups.

 

ive heard one of the reasons a bitch will eat her pups was a lack of calcium, which causes her to eat her pups since puppies are full of calcium.,

 

thanks for that input guys. The Female is 2 1/2 yrs old. So i should start giving the pups puppy food now?

 

You could try a real soupy mix of puppy food soaked in a store bought puppy formula which is sold in most pet supply stores... If the pups are ready for it they will usually lap it up after a little taste of it..

 

yes you can!!
it takes verry much time and more pups more time. when there ar 12 pups for exemple, its almost when reddy whit the last you can start over again whit the first..

 

my bitch ate her first litter ,so i was told by the police an rspca in 91
when i got them back n re bred them she never ate any
i think it was down to stress

I Would some chicken broth w/ some kinda puppy suppliment, maybe even some goats milk. I've done it in the past and it worked out for me.
