Female That Eats Her Pups

I Have a Female that pups just turned 3weeks and she had a total of 9 3 lookd sick so that left her with 6. I checked on her pups today 1 was missing so im guess she ate 1. what would cause a mother dog to eat her pups. Thanks for you time.

 

They will eat them for nutrition, or if they feel that the pup is sick.

now to the op, u said them pups are 3 weeks old start taking them off the bitch an just put em on her to feed while your suppervising... u can have em completely off her by 4 weeks... she basicaly raised em get em off her before u aint got any pups left... and she develops a taste for baby eating,lol
ps...u might also wanna give em a heating pad if u do take em off for a week or two.

Start weaning them at three weeks, let her see them twice a day, so they can still suckle.

If it died she may have eaten it. Nature's way of keeping the nest clean. All animals do this.

they are not getting what they need in dog food . feed people food to her . and get the food to them as soon as she finishes having them . at 3 weeks she may have seen that it was sick and cleaned the pen so the rest would be ok .

 

they can eat pups for all reassons..
its a terrible face atleast you diddent see it.

bud most of the time they just clean up the mess..
sometimes they make a mistake whit just borns.. and eat to far..
sometimes the pain from a c-session.


diddent know it can come by missing something in there food , bud i always feed my pregnant females my left overs. allso the other dogs. always have done that.

How old is the mother?


I agree with oldtymer, and watch over them feeding so she doesnt down another lol

 

I read somewhere that sometimes they can kill(not eat) their pups due to high prey drive

 

In other breeds they put it down to stress is this her first litter that would do it.
