mill work is not needed. BXPITS is right. A mill should be used sparingly for sprints only!!!! handwalking and cycling will suffice if you do not own a mill. I know of real life gr ch dogs that never seen a mill. Also, careful what kind or make of slatmill you use. A resisting mill could put way too much stress on the kidneys... jmo

It's obvious you've never owned a dog that wouldnt take to flirt pole or spring pole. All the excercises you mentioned can be worked in without use of a spring pole or flirt.... you have to be creative and use the mind frame of a "poor boys keep". In fact, a keep really isnt about mills and walking... it's about constantly getting the dog to work on a daily bases in shape, way, fashion, or form! jmo

thanks oldslowblue, took the words right out of my mouth.
it is very true you dont need anything really for a keep but a dog thats willing to work for you everyday. you dont need to work the bite as the dog is either born with mouth or its not, it cant be created. there are alternative ways to work the jaw muscle but i will not mention here.
too much flirtpole can cause a serious damage internally as all that twisting is really unnatural for a adult dog.
crenshaw was known to drop 20-30 pounds putting a dog through a keep and a dog is really happy doing all that walking because he is with you.
i wont say the walking is too much simply because look how many great pit dogs he conditioned this way

I have two that won't work the spring pole but they all love the flirt pole. One gets bored a little quicker than the others. Actually she's a pain in the ass all the way around. The only work she does enjoy is the spring pole. The only way I can get her to do mill work is by putting another dog on the spring pole in front of her while she's on the mill. How can I tell if the mill isn't free spinning enough?

Too many have over worked their dogs in the past.Too much mill work will hurt your dog. Rest is one of the most important parts of conditioning dogs.Without rest they can't recover from the workout.I have seen too many dogs that was overworked and would have done better if taken right off the chain.I have used a mill for a very short time.Hand walking and using a bike is the best to me.Swimming sometimes is very good but not always available do to weather or area. There is really nothing set in stone everyone has different ideas some work for some and some don't.I still say though rest in between workouts is the most important to me.

wonder how many of ya'll actually ever put one in keep or know people who've actually tried a handwalking keep? bxpits posts are on point. if one thinks about how many inner city kennels whose keeps are often a good amount of handwalking and the numerous proven sporting animals that come from such keeps then it makes sense. no keep is concrete, they are all outlines. Been plenty a dog to be handwalked to show time..if your dog is naturally not long winded you ADD an exercise to build wind. Handwalking can be a core element along with other exercises.

My dog has never been to a show but i walk her about 20-25 hours a week and mix in 20-30 in of running one day and then 20-30 min of sprints the next day and i can tell you this dog is in great shape. She can keep up with me a endurance runner and avid hiker all day and all night at whatever pace i throw at her. She tops out at an all out full effort at about 20-25 min and needs about 5 min to cool and can do it again or walk for another half a day if need be. I dont know nothing about shows but i was a pro athlete myself and the fact is there is many ways to the same goal. An imop it seems to me just hand walking will take a hound pretty dam far, mix in a bit or high impact running and a dog can get in great shape real quick!!

agreed. Not saying our way is the right way, because each and every dog is different. Problem is, everyone wants to make, create, or have a solid keep that they can use for the rest of time, however, every dog is different, has to be worked different, and supplies or equipment may be limited. Truth be told, the key to a good keep is to work enough with out over working the hound, plenty rest, and avoiding activities that put the dog at risk or in harms way. I don't void mills and jennys out, but use them sparingly if at all b/c of the stress it puts on the kidneys.

If any of you believe this is truly Crenshaw's keep then some are just lost.. Mill is supposed to be a substitute, but it can be effective if used during the whole keep.. I wouldn't recommend but to each it's own. This truly is not Crenshaw's full keep and if you ever had pleasure of going over a keep with him you would notice this is not his keep and what he thought of walking and the importance of road work..

I dont care who's keep you read. I dont care how close you follow it. It is most importian to find ways of working youre dog that work for both you and youre dog and also youre envorment.Get out there Work with youre bulldogs. Try different things. Trial and error. Proper nutrition and PROPER REST !! are just as ,no...more importian than what activitys you incorperate into youre keep. oldslowblue and BX are right on. As far as handwalking in a keep . The amount of handwalking is up to the person working there dog. I will say this It is an importain part of a keep IMO. Wardog has stated the proper way to use walking in a keep . To empty out , to warm up and to cool down. I tend to do more walking then some but my way isnt the only way.

Keeps are guidlines to follow....but "common sense" and a "good eye" for a dog is what's really needed to put a dog in shape!!!
The dog should make his own times and rest schedules as you gradually increase his work times.

another thing is every dogman has a keep they are willing to share and a keep they win with, if that makes any sense. it all depends on the individual dog what works.
jaystreeta4 knows a little something about inner city hand walking if you guys have ever had the chance to see ch spikey!

Call me crazy but i dont ever use a set routine to work my dogs, every dog is different and will need a different routine based on their own needs, hell you could condition a dog this year and get him in tip top shape but if you got to do it again in a couple years you may have to change a few things to get him back in that shape.
