Long torso or short compact torso bulldogs????what are the pro's and con's of each???

Discussion in 'APBT Bloodlines' started by biggadam419, Sep 14, 2010.

  1. Ive had compact short torso'd hounds and longer torso'd hounds,{area from front 2 back legs} the long dogs seemed more powerfull and longwinded, the compact dogs were more agile, longwinded and just moved better...longer 1's seem more sloppy in there movement...any experiance with this???i prefer the compact built bulldog

the torso length effects the ability to turn. it the torso is out of proportion with height, they los leverage when pushing, pulling, etc. wing has more to do with depth than length. a slightly longer torso was usually allowed for females, whch need room to carry a litter of pups.

i know a guy that liked his long bodied dogs, said they hadmore wind...but i was curious myself, def make for good discussion.... i know a nice deepchest makes for some good wind, dunno how it affects turning and stuff. one of my dogs has a pretty deep chest and he moves very well

Yeah from personal experiance the longer 1's ive had/seen were naturally long winded but jus moved with no style[sloppy you could say]but i've had a few good 1's and a few turds lol...i have come to run with short torso'd bodied compact deep chested bulldogs...just walkin the dog you can feel the diffrence. The longer 1's seem 2 have better balance also, some not all. The long 1's i had never went on there back or lost a wrestin match w/ a hog in the bush i'll tell ya that much, its like it gives em more leverage or somthin lol...but ive had the same with the shorter torso'd 1's... All dogs are diffrent tho...just was curious 2 see whats others thought of this...thanx 4 the comment fellas...

Never owned a short backed one but i really like em and hope to own more than one of them someday. I only have and have owned one apbt and she is long in the torso and real deep in the chest but not wide at all. This dog is agile as all hell can move move move, used to outrun greyhounds and huskies at the dog park when she was 5-6 months old. She has great wind so long as it isnt hot hot.. breathes heavy but just keeps going!! Shit she outran every dog at the park didnt matter what breed. I learnt the dog park lesson lucky for me not at the dog park!! I like a more compact dog though so i wanna get my hands on some more compact type dogs. She is big also like 55 conditioned 60 not.

The long dogs that I've had all had a much better defensive style, they manage to stay outta trouble much better than the short torso probably because of the extra flexibility. My short ones seems to be more powerful while walking, but not the case when they are against each other. The long dogs have a much better advantage in my opinion and usually use much less energy too. I prefer long dogs over short torso dogs, better flexibily and a wider turning ratio prevents backend damage. JMO

There are no absolutes when it comes to structure and style or anything else about these dogs. I will say most of the long ones I have seen were more run and shoot types. They found a spot they liked and hit it hard without giving any thought to defense.

I got stupid reasons.. dont flame me.. i know you cant have both so they say but i bet you sure as hell can if you know where to find it. I def seen plenty of dogs of old that fit the bill of the type of dog i like and could go no problem and looked the part. I just like the look of a dog that is more compact.. a bit shorter in the leg and back. Some dogs get outa control and are way to leggy and long for my taste. If i cant find that perfect mix i will take a dog that can go and is a little long in the leg, back and snout if need be, but i will take my time and try first. I am not talking crazy shit here like bullie mutts just want the best of both worlds and i know it exists. I dont like a dog that looks like all leg and no shoulders unless it is ripped ripped ripped. Imop the long lanky ones just dont look like a bulldog to me and i really enjoy a good looking bulldog as much as the next guy. I think a big part of it is i already got a dog with leg and back and want that stocky but little dog look.

i hear where you are coming from as far as looking more athletic i suppose.. coming from a background as pro endurance athlete myself i gotta say you are right about that. The taller thinner guys always where the powerhouses. i however fell in love with the more compact ripped up looks like it couldnt topple over if you tried. And again i dont mean bully shiiiite!! I just mean a apbt with that stocky look. just what i have dreamed of for a decade and a half and figure if i am gonna spend the money and time to have a yard full of dogs i might as well take my time and raise what i like and also works!!

so being i have no exp with a more compact dog what would you say the main disadvantage is or are. provided you get one with a deep chest you are in for a good chance at good wind. I like the idea of more power and agile from a shorter dog is it holds true. my guess is it dont really matter much either way a good dog is a good dog, sure you can find a good dog in both styles.

yes its just a matter of discussion, to see peoples opnion.... all i own is tall more compact build ...my male is a bit on the longer side but not much at all. they both move real well... i think you are looking for a shorter more compact dog? mine are not long but they are 21 inches tall, so they are by no means short... during the winter they have no problems with wind.. its the summer that is hardon em...

I didn't mix anything up, I am well aware of what we are talking about..To me the longer/taller dog looks and should have more lung capacity and longer more fluent speed.

My bitch is like 19 tall and probably 19-20 long. and around 55 lbs in great shape 60 in the winter. i would like a bit shorter and def shorter in the back. her chest is so deep it is crazy but not wide at all. She has much better wind in winter also like does not need to stop. We ran today for qbout 2.5 miles at 75-80% with a bit humidity and she was a bit slower and woulda rather not but does it no problem till its over 80-90. It took time to get her used the heat though and i dont really call 80-90 all that hot unless its like crazy humid. go down to 75 though and she will run as long as i ask her 5 miles no problem.

I sure hope so.. so much of what i see that i like is either dogs of yesterday or dogs of today that people refuse to talk about. as much as i will be ok with it i guess i just hope i done have to go with dogs from TG as good as some can be they are not really what i had in mind. some have one part but lack the other in many cases.

yea ,waitiing on that first damn strong cold front to push through.. it got to 96 today and 85 percent humidity.... i took em in the shade and did a little something something for like 25minutes... before i go i water emdown , cause it gets pretty humid down here in the south ...where you at ? up north? def got get em use to the heat... thats why i dont hunt during summer... just to humid, takes a toll on the dogs....
