You make a good point. The pads on these dogs are pretty soft.

  2. I am in the same boat as of right now. I am just tryin to find the right bloodline as far as what I am lookin for. I have owned my first amstaff calli an that dog would run an swim all day never quit. I had to put her down at 6 years havin siezures as said above. I bought her from BYB an had no clue about dogs my mistake but got a great dog for the 6 I had her.

My next dog was Gotti/somethin else I got rid of that worthless bitch after 6 months as a pup that dog was lazy eat sleep an shit all day thats it.

So I did some research as I am doin now an found that they are not a working dog. Only show an what alot of ppl think is show is just disgusting fat three inches off the ground.. Thats animal abuse at its finest that dog could barely walk around.

But I was able to get a hold of a true APBT named Bat. He was an accident due to poor yard management so got him for free. I dont want to say what bloodline he is cause no papers.. But that dog is not afraid of shit. Like said before not a dog you let run with out a leash anything that has 4 legs is "play time"..

Popper, plenty of old-timers here (if there really are any) would know my face if I posted a pic of me as a youngster in the early to late 70's. I was the blonde haired kid at all the "shows" in S. IL, IN and OH who was still eating and slurp'n pop while the other little pussies were crying to their parent to leave or make it stop LMAO! The only night-mares I have are due to the fact that there are a billion more Chinese than there are of us.

maybe he had a dif need for a dog? My owning a ambull has shown me i have a dif need for a dog than a ambull can provide but to each his own right. I guess the whole the pit bull dont need the ambull makin a mess for it is valid enough reason to just get a staffy bull instead and call it day, if not go to another breed i guess, at least thats how i see it and what i would do. If i didnt want some of the pit bull temp stuff and a dog that had many of the pit bull attributes still that is what i would do probably.

Gambling was the draw for Grandad, not the dogs. I did'nt even have a dog when I was a kid cause my Mom does'nt like them. I've had gamers and bullies both. Bullies are just what I have right now. They won't live forever :)

APBT is not a good first dog if you dont train them right off leash with this breed is a bitch they see another dog or any small animal there subject to go after it then you have a problem on your hands if you want a good running partner go get a mutt i had a wolf huskie mix when i was 12 that thing would pull me on my bike all day long in the moutains in colorado springs if your heart is set on a working APBT stay away from any bully lines there are some well bred blue dogs you just have to find the right breeder keep doing your homework and dont pick the first breeder you see with a cheap price if you want a well bred dog be ready to spend 400 plus and make sure the parents have been health tested to help insure a sound dog

I beg to differ, while greyhounds are made to run. They were bred to run short distances at full gallop. Not distance runners, greyhounds have very low % of fat, so they either overheat or freeze if temperatures are far from Ideal.

A twenty mile trail ride would not be too much for a dog that has been condition to do that kind of a trek, if he was gradually condition for that distance. You just don't go out and run 10 miles without any time of conditioning yourself. You should exercise, start of short and gradually increase distance.

You will get pros and cons..some dogs will surprise the hell out of you sometimes. dogs that were bred for distance will run out of gas, and dogs that were meant to be couch potatoes will very high energy. There are exceptions. Get something you like, and I am sure he will be a happy dog.:dogdrink:

    Good luck!!!

just remeber if you get a real deal APbt, the chances of it being dog agresive are very high. Hiking with no leash on a dog can be bad news. If it comes across a dog it will fight even if the other dog wants no part of it.. If you do get one and it is not dog aggresive as puppy dont think it willo stay that way . As they mature things can change BIGTIME. your once puppy that was okay with other dogs can do a 180 on ya.

get a husky if the climate isn't too hot
LOTS of energy and endurance and bred to run for miles

the only downside is that they are escape artists lol

Honestly, if you're leading a life THAT active [which I think is really cool :D] but have never owned an APBT before, like someone else suggested, get a Rhodesian Ridgeback... They are a tad animal aggressive, but if you can find one from working breeders and not pure AKC [assuming you're in the USA] then you've got the perfect dog. They are built to work and hike and run and jog for a long, long time. They're not the easiest dog to train compared to, say, a BC or a GSD, but I'd trust a Rhodie offleash faster than I'd trust an APBT.

  13. Definitely can't do a greyhound--they are a sight hound, and have a huge prey drive. I live in the country and have free range poultry--chickens, ducks, turkeys, two pet geese and a pet peacock, who I'm sure would be eaten about 2 seconds after a greyhound moved in. I know pits can definitely have a high prey drive, but they also are MUCH more trainable.

I'm not a big fan of the sighthounds as a general rule, and all the OTT greyhounds I've worked with have had zero personality. Not sure if it's a breed trait or just from not having been brought up and socialized with people.

I also should add that we don't always do 20 miles on horseback, and most of my dogs have learned that when they get tired they just get my attention and they can ride for a couple miles while they rest up. I also can keep a dog on leash by tying them to the saddle horn--I guarantee you that a pit won't drag my 1200 pound quarter horse gelding or my 1400 pound draft cross molly mule anywhere, and both of my mounts are totally dog friendly in that they are used to be followed, ridden, and sharing their grain with dogs.

Though I'm very sure that a greyhound isn't the dog I'm looking for, I very much appreciate everyone's thoughts and advice, and I am definitely soaking up everything y'all are saying.

  14. See this is very much the kind of thing I need to hear, as I was kind of thinking that socialization, lots of exercise, and neutering would hopefully make the DA a non-issue. Doesn't sound like that's the case at all.

Makes me wonder about all the rescues and that I've been looking at who are listed as being 'great with other dogs.' I wouldn't leave any of my dogs together unattended, but is it realistic to think that I could have an APBT who could ever be trusted around my other dogs? Because if that is the case, then y'all are absolutely right that this may not be the breed for me, and as several people have pointed out, I definitely want to figure that out BEFORE I get a dog, not after.

  15. Game,

No pedaling here--and the first time any dog of mine hits the end of that rope tied to 1400 hundred pounds of draft mule, it's definitely not me who is going to land on her ass. :D

Think of the Kohler method times about a zillion.

Yeah cesar says he can train DA out and i am sure he can with the right dog that is not a real APBT. Get a APBT from Working lines that was breed to do its intended job and you can bet your ass Mr. Milan would be outa a job real quick! Not having a attitude but for real if you want a dog that can keep the company of your other pets and animals a APBT is not the animal for you. I do however think a APBT would be just a fine dog for what you wanna do if you are really willing to do what the dog needs at times, slow down give it a rest for a couple miles, Crate or kennel it when you cant be around. They can be fine with other dogs they are raised around but they also can not be fine at all with dogs they have been raised around and little of it has to do with how you train the dog!

KOHLER METHOD!!!:D:D:D tried and true!!! Nice to know others remember it!!You could try looking for an aussie pit bull cross in the papers, or maybe on craigs list, I have known people in California that hiked and jogged and trail rode often, that mix seems very good for training and for an active lifestyle. just an idea.....

Get a dog that is geared towards what you want it for...

If you want a running companion, get a dog that was built to run.
If you do not want a dog that is dog aggressive, this dog should be dead last on your list lmao

That sounds to me like a great idea, i actually think the right dog would be a great fit for what i think this guy is a lady wants a dog for. I non DA APBT and they do exist can make great pets for people with highly active lifestyles!!! Just imop of course each to their own of course.
