looking to hunt something with my female

Discussion in 'Sports & Activities' started by bamarammin87, Jul 29, 2010.

  1. Hey guys. I have a question. I hunt for deer/coyotes/squirrels/lots of stuff. I have plenty of woods access around. Lots of different game animals. I am looking to find something to hunt with my female. She isn't very big, about 50 pounds right now, a few weeks from 1 year old. She has a winter belly and would probably drop to low 40s now that I'm starting conditioning. So she's a medium sized dog. I'm looking for something we can do together in the woods. I love, and my dogs have always loved going out in the woods. Is there any certain animal she could have fun hunting? Something I can hunt with her without other dogs. She's got a high prey drive. Would squirrel be something to try? How would I go about that? Or maybe coon? Id love for her to get ahold of bigger animals, but there's not really anything bigger around, besides hogs. Id try her on hogs, but I have no other big dogs. Thanks fellas, I'm really wanting to find a type of hunting we can enjoy together, she really wants to be doing something, lots of energy.

    Ian:)

  2. Here she is. Yes I know she's chunky...I've started walking her and started with a flirt pole tho, so maybe she'll slim up!

i like her, gotta ped on her? Im not a hunter but i know a guy who took out 6 coyotes with 2 dogs. might be something to try if she is up to it. He used male dogs btw.

  4. No ped :(
I got her from a guy in my town. Saw both the parents, they were gorgeous...and looked mean as a rattlesnake, they were ripped. Its ok tho, I love her to death even without papers and knowing the whole bloodline. I was super impressed with the parents, and she was so dang cute @ 7 weeks old I couldn't say no :) I am going to go talk to the guy again and see if I can find anything out about them, I didn't even ask while I was there getting her.
It would be great fun to coyote hunt with her, only thing is if one leads her back to a pack, theyl have her half eaten before I can get to her!

  5. why don't you try her on woodchucks.

  6. How would I start her on those? I didn't know people hunted em with dogs.

  7. look it up

but when she is, what can he hunt?

im interested in knowing this also!

  10. Alright, well I'll work on getting her in shape, and then in half a year I'll start. Surely there's something I can get her to hunt, even just by sight/sound.

  13. lol bas. I would too...as soon as they cut us loose on wheeler refuge we will be able to...won't have Roxy with me tho.

Shaka...that's what I'm reading, I still would like to figure out what to hunt first tho. I didn't realize she needed to be older...so in the meantime, I'll be slowly conditioning her.

What wildlife are around you? If you have feral hogs, definitely something to look for. If you don't want to risk her being injured, I'd go for small game. If you have wood chucks around you or ground hog, you can go for that. Then there are those that hunt coyotes and these dogs are quite effective at that. There are also people that hunt bob cats and those that are into treeing squirrels, chipmunks, etc.

  20. Hmmm. I have an area with hogs, but my only other 2 dogs are both sub 15 poundd pets. I have a buddy with a coon hound, but no other ones I can access. I don't think shed handle a hog alone...I don't mind her getting banged up, but I don't want to send her on a suicide mission. I wonder how guys get dogs started on different animals. Woodchucks or groundhogs would be fun, or hunting squirrels like you would with a feist would be also. Maybe I could ake her with my buddys coonhound sometime. I'm sure there's SOMETHING we can hunt together. Just has to be something one dog can do. Thanks for the ideas. It would be cool to meet up with forum members and get some hounds and go hog hunt!
