Why Call Them BULLDOGS if they're Terriers?

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by Speedpeddler, Jul 23, 2010.

  1. First, I don't own an APBT but hope to own one good one in my lifetime. I've had lots of EB's, Boxers, and one AB. Sorry if this is a stupid question but I'm curious and the reply's might be interesting.

Why do owners of APBT call them Bulldogs when they are Terriers? Bulldogs to me are English Bulldogs, American Bulldogs, etc. The APBT doesn't look like a Bulldog to me. I've been corrected on the forum for calling them Pitt's, Pitties, Pitbulls or anything else but Bulldogs or APBT.

So, is it because they were originally a cross between a Bull & Terrier dog? Or, because their ancestor's were used to bait Bull's? Or maybe it's the term those in the game prefer?

They were the Orignial Bulldog.........read Stratton and research history of the breed, there are a few reasons.

man when i see a question like this it makes me wonder..

this may sound strange but when i see questions like this it makes me think that this cant be a genuine person asking a legit question..

i think that the man is trying to come up with their own wikipidia like info for their own usage against apbt owners and they need to cover every lil thing we say or do..so they have to ask these ridiculous random questions just to get it in the books..

now i know this is not new news to anyone, they've always been lurking in the shadows but when they come on here pretending to be noobies and ask these ridiculous ass questions ,must we be so quick to oblige them..??

  15. Finally! A response that makes sense and somewhat confirms what I was getting at in the first place. It seem's the term "Bulldog" is primarily used because that's what people LIKE to call them and has little to do with appearance. I like the look of a good APBT, but it is more of a terrier look than a Bulldog look IMO. I think if you use the term Bulldog to most people, they don't think of the APBT. They visualize an EB.

Some of you guys are seriously paranoid if a simple question on a forum gets responses like some of these. It was just a qustion on a DISCUSSION forum. Nothing more.

Sorry if I offended some over sensitive egos.

It has nothing to do with appearance. See, you're perspective is all wrong. Don't look at the breed of the dog but the job of the dog... then ask your self does the EB do that job? Does it do the job of a bulldog or does it just get its name from it. Doesnt matter if it was crossed with terrier as this was done so the job could be done more efficiently. We don't call them bulldogs cuz we like the way it sounds. We call em bulldogs cuz thats what they are.

  17. Explanation accepted and understood.

Thank you sir for a reasoned response.

If I'm out and about and I see someone with a nice looking apbt, I say, "hey I like your bulldog", and if they say- "it's not a bulldog it's a pit" -that's the end of our conversation. they just told me everything I need to know.

Also, you can ask "how's your dog bred?" or "what bloodline is that dog?" If they say "he's a pit" run the other way!!!
