when picking a pup???

Discussion in 'Breeder Discussion' started by deadgam33, Jul 21, 2010.

  1. well i always make sure the parents of my puppies are health tested.i make sure that they are update on their shots before i breed them or get a puppy off a litter.i basicly looks at how close they are to the breed standard and their personality.

I won't go into what all I look for but a deal breaker and the first thing I look at is the top of its mouth inside, and see weather or not it has pigment on the top, if there is no pigment or very little then I won't pick that pup. Period. I also won't pick game chickens with low set tails....

Is this a Tennessee thing?I've only heard this from Tennessee boys.We were taught that as kids.
After I pick my favorites I check the roof of their mouths and sure as shit they are black.
Coincidence? or old southern wives tale? or S.W.A.T?
something about how pigment settles inutero and blood flow to the brain?
    Thoughts anyone

I check the health of sire an dam, also the pup's.The build of them I like the chest to reach the elbows this shows that they will have good AIR.I will then take the ones I like one by one to a strange place,an see how they act if they cower or bark I take it back an get one more till I find the one that suits my needs.

Timid pups deff both my pups (10 month old RBJ/nigerino male, and a 7 week RBJ/nigerino female) were timid and champ (the male) turned on around 8 months but very happy with runt picking results :)

Personally, I like the runts because everything against them and they still fight on with their larger siblings for food. I figure why the hell not, chances are if the pup is fighting for food, he'll fight in the pit but that is just me. Funny thing about runts though, I've seen plenty of runts end up larger than their siblings. I watched an entire litter of 5 grow from yelp and they are over 3 years old now. The runt at 8 weeks old was a mere 6 lbs. while the others were around 11, though they were all the same height more or less. That runt also ate more than the other pups, but was about 10 times as active. Now he is the heaviest out of all the four. He is 21 inches at the withers, the others are around the 20-21 inch mark, but he is 54# while the others are 48-51#. He is also one of the better catchdogs out of the 5 according to the owner, though I haven't seen him work.

I go with the old tried and trued method:

-The pup that comes to me with it's tail wagging, plays a while, then goes back to mom for some reassurance.

-The pup that I just naturally gravitate to.

I tend not to try and choose most of the time, i try and let the little fella choose me. There seems to always be one or two that end up that way.
