Dragging chain vs weighted collars and vest

Discussion in 'Sports & Activities' started by Dream Pits, Jun 9, 2010.

  1. I have used weighted collars but never during a keep. I use a carpet mill for building muscle . The way to go with a collar is to use diver weights they start at 2 pounds and up. But muscles can hurt a dog more so than make a dog due to the blood and oxegn muscles need . One time I was running a dog on a chain system at the park and I had a yuppy cus me out asking me what the hell I was doing. I was like dude I'll put this chain on your ass if you don't shut your mouth lol true story but street swim and mill are the way to go for me at least Ps love this site great topics

lets say the training is for hog hunting.....by conditioning it by carrying a weighted harness evenly and comfortably over its body its learning to move somewhat freely.....and building its strength.....but with weight pulling......well.....building strength yes......but movement.......not so much......

I do all 3, my dog like to swimm with the chain on:) i do with her some steep hill running with weighted harnass this gives good muscles on her legs.
with chainpulling with a collar on her neck i noticed that most off the times her legs got hurt off the chain.

    Try this guys

Take your chain and weld it into a ball like the size of a basket ball.....attach a small ass spring to the ball then to the harness and drag...... drag for one week

Then get another piece of chain and just clip it to the harness with NO spring and just drag for another week and switch em up off and on ok......and remember to turn around and go opposite ways....dogs naturally lean to ONE side :)

Let me know how that goes for you.....cos i know how it goes for me ;)

  7. Catch dog what do you mean by " they look at you for help this gives you a chance to show that dog he can trust you" ? How do you show him/her that?

That`s good if it`s good quality functional muscle. Most people have the right idea that you have to taper before competing. Fatigue often masks fitness and most people are unaware that the nervous system takes up to 5 x longer to recover than the muscular system.

Dragging chains is good. Just be sure your dog is ready for the work. In a 6 week keep I will drag chains for 2-4 weeks depending on the animal (1 -2 days a week only). You have be pay attention to your animal. You can overwork them easily doing this. But the results if done right are exceptional. Always go a little lighter rather than heavier. You can always go a little heavier the next walk if the weight seemed to light.

Also, another good way to put some good muscle work into your dog is to have a buddy walk another dog in front of your dog (about 20-30 feet) so your dog is working hard the entire walk. We call these Power Walks and they are great. Granted, you have to be working a dog with a high prey drive or this won't work. Just keep in mind that you do not want to do muscle work more than two times a week.

Tug of war (like red nose girl showed in her facebook pictures) is very good too. But I would only do this with both dogs on chains as accidents can and do happen when the dogs are loose.

Good Luck and post some pictures so we can see your progress. Remember, pay attention to your animal and always veer to the side of caution. An easy work day or an extra rest day here or there is a million times better than overworking the dog.

i was sifting through the post to see if someone would mention this fact...
    and indeed you have.
power lifters don't run marathons due to this reason. if you're training for
weight pull comps, then it's much different then hunting style conditioning.

i need to add that dragging anything with other than a proper weight pull harness
can and attribute to injuries do to the awkward stance the dogs are forced to pull said weight.
tire dragging is a great way to add strength and endurance. poke/cut/drill a hole through center of tread and use a large washer and 0 style bolt. rope will wear and chain makes a god awful noise and will also wear over time if you just wrap the tire.

Running is a great way to keep from gaining to much bulk. Swimming is also one of the best ways to where out a dog on a hot summer day IMO. They stay cool and can last longer without needing a break.

not to thread jack but didnt want to make a new thread since this one is about the same. Well i have just started dragging chains with a 2 in collar. chain is close to 10 lbs. First time out she drag it for hour an 30 min. Just wondering how long do people drag chains and the distance.

the original poster never stated "WHY" they intended to drag weight... Is it for weight pull competition? Show ring competition? Just to get the dog looking better? Hog hunting?

I use all three in moderation... tho there is a hard gainer that I drag more frequently...

If you want strength but no change in appearance or weight then the dog would have to pull the chains for 20 secs or less at 85% or more of it`s 1RM. If the dog can move the chains for longer than 20 secs then the chains are too light. Rest should be 3-5 mins to allow the nervous system to recover and ensure no adaptations due to a hormonal response take place.

If there are other goals then all these variables will change.

that is a lot at one time...i use about 25% of the dogs weight...i pull them for time and then drop the chain and handwalk...pick up the chain again...but not 1.5 hours at a time...US1

take a rucksack or just carry the chain then put it back on later, also as has been said you need to invest in a harness especially if you want to start upping the weight.
