first off hello to everybody i'm new to this forum and pitbulls..I don't own one yet ...still doing my research on the breed.

I have a few questions regarding pitbull size .... at the turn of the last century pitbulls were 25-40 lbs ...then the old family reds came about and size went up 40-60 lbs...after the show version of the pitbull (am staffs) came about the weight went up again 60-80 lbs now in the last 15-20 yrs we have these mass monsters now 80-115 lbs . does this sound about right???

if so then the only "true" pitbull is the light weight version 25-40 lbs...and i read somewhere that william lightner stopped breeding the red noses as he thought they didn't have the stamina as the smaller dogs.so does this size issue affect gameness at all??

is gameness an indicator for guard/personal protection capabilities of the dog??

i've come across mixed reviews regarding using pitbulls for guard dogs/personal protection...what are your guy's thoughts on this issue??would you use an 80 lber or two 40 lbers ???

i've been around several pitbulls 50-80 lbers and i've found them very friendly but i'm not convinced that they would be great guard/personal protection dogs...2 of these dogs just let the theives take what they wanted from my friends homes...so much for being protective:( .I was attacked by a pitbull that lived down the street at my old house ..it was about 50 lbs ...it happened so fast but his bite wasn't that strong...i punched him in the head with my left fist and he dropped to the ground and went back to his yard ...compared to a german shepard/husky cross bite that i got years before it was rather weak.

as you can tell by now i'm looking for a dog for home/personal protection....the dogs i'm looking over are:

    american pitbull terrier
    boerboel
    presa canario
    cane corso
    rottweiler

i love the look of the pitbull and i'm pretty sure that i'll/we (my wife ) will get a pitbull....my wife is determined to get one after we saw one fight another dog at our local park and was impressed with the dog...she wants an all white one....i guess the problem is what size of a pitbull we'll get ...plus i just want to be reassured that a pitbull is well suited for home/personal protection.

thanks in advance for your responses.

I wouldn't recommend a pitbull for protection. I think the Presa Canario would be a far better choice if you want it for that. These dogs are just too friendly, and if you will just be giving them a bad name if you want them to be aggressive. They have enough bad press as it is.

I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure these monster pit bulls are mixed with other dogs for their size.

Also it's not good to get a pit bull for the color, gameness is what they look for here.

Edit: Gameness can be summed up http://www.game-dog.com/forums/showthread.php?t=130

get a presa canario (canary island fighting dog). the reasons u want a dog seem geared towards nothing but protection. presa canario will fit the bill for what u want.

I wouldn't suggest getting a pit bull for protection, if that's what your looking for. Try one of the other breeds for that.

LuNoTick thanks for your point of view...have you owned or been around the presa canario???what are they like???

boondock......G's....can you say PARANOID!!!!......first off read my post again I said that my wife was impressed with the pitbull after seeing the fight at the park NOT myself...secondly I was bitten by a pitbull and IT DIDN'T HURT...it's not my fault that the dog doesn't have a strong bite.....AND I AIN'T NO COP!!!!
I told you guy's that I'm still doing my research on the breed if you don't have the patience to educate the uninformed then don't answer the post.

    thanks.

I personally prefer the old lines of bulldogs meaning the smaller one about 35-45lbs but people have polluted the breed over the years with these large dogs and yes I do question their breeding but that is just my opinion.
Now abut the guard dog stuff... You certainly dont need a pit for protection because they just werent bred for that purpose. Size has nothing to do with gameness and gameness doesnt mean that the dog will excell as a guard dog, actually a game dog would suck as a guard dog but. Anyway I would suggest that you do alot more researcg on the breed and in the mean time get you a Rottie. as a guard dog it will do much better.

Well I'm a dog SUPER ROOKIE. You can get far more information from other people for sure. I've only seen a couple presa canario's. From the ones I have saw, they aren't as friendly as the pit bull. They are bigger, and in my opinion from what I have heard they would make a better guard dog. There are so many types of dogs that you can go for also, the ones you listed would probably all be better than a pitbull for guard dog work.

Wuts up, man, i am new to the game to, i do know some info on other breeds also though, but yes, for a guard dog, the Persian canry dog is the way to go, they are bigger and very strong dogs, def go with the p.c. dog!!!! MAKE sure u get one from a good breeder though!!!

If you are looking for a stricty home protection dog I would most definitely recommend a Rottweiler. I have grown up my whole life with Rotts but am now raising my first Pitbull. Although pits can be fierce, protective, and extremely loyal their sheer protective instincts do not compare to a Rottweillers...Good Luck!

  13. You should go with either of those...i've seen a couple that remind me of some APBTs (pups though)..

But, nah, i don't think pits are good at guarding...that is, unless it's a man-eater and you have it chained somewhere where you'd have to pass it...or something like that...lol, but that's a bad idea to...
