juss thought id start a thread for shits N giggles, sorry if the topic has been covered. juss curious to what you folk's experiences have been with the runts that they have bred or came up on (this question basically applies to those that hold on to theyre stock).

not that i want a runt or anything, juss thought it may make fun conversation.

how many or how often is it that the runt ends up being the best of the litter? and many runts have yall bred that ended up being something special? any interesting stories?

how about "well known" dogs from the past that were actually the runt of the litter?

    feel free to post pics.

Size of the dog has nothing to do with his gameness and such, Runts stand just as good of a chance as any other pup in the litter to make something of themselves.

i though the size was affected my lack of nutrients and just "all around" a step behind the other pups!?! ive personally never chosen or kept a runt from any litter so i wouldnt know.

Hmmm Well In the 2 Litters I've had for Hog hunting in the last 3 years the runts were the most hot-headed as pups...took nothin off of no one not even there dam..real rough dogs probably because they had to fight for eveything they got as youngins.now whether they turned out the best? it depends on who your askin, personally i think the best pup i've ever bred was actually the biggest out of his litter..not as rough but much smarter..

well, my dog seems to be the smallest from the litter so far..
there were about 11 or 12 pups and I've only seen pics from a handfull on pedsonline so.. who knows!

I am very satisfied with him, I like his size, he's not to big yet and he is a great, fiesty, outgoing and very energetic pup :)
    I LOVE his attitude :D

yea i was always curious about the theory that they always had to fight a little harder too.

Some runts are 2-3 days younger than their littermates, this is because some eggs get fertilized after the most are, so those pups are less developed but nothing more, and since days and hours are very important, they tend to nurse less than their bigger littermates so they have to fight harder for the tit.

I never did a breeding but if i had a good fighting-tit runt, that would be my pick!

Sorry for my bad english lol.

Iv'e had several runts that were the best of the bunch, I'm always pullin for the runt, but they don't get no special attention from me or help! They do gotta push a little harder to get milk or struggle more to get out from under there mother, a lot of them don't make it! But I have noticed several that did had a little extra somthin about them! Being the runt don't mean that when grown the'll always be small, a lot out grow thier siblings! I had one so small I mean TINY! I didn't think she'd make it through the night, I Actually think she's my favorite dog at the present time. I had to separate her from the rest of her litter at 7 weeks she was puttin a stompin on every one of her brothers and sisters and I'm talkin BLOODY! Lol I somtimes really like a runt!

I do not think a dog being a runt has anything at all to do with future performance. I also do not think a dog being the runt means it will be the smallest in the litter upon maturity.

my best dog was the runt. If you leave it up to nature then they might not make it depending on the litter size. BUT IF YOU HAVE A YARD, monitor the pups and make sure they all get their chance to shine. I am not sayin this is a real but my experience is they tend to be feisty lil mo fo's.

This true depending on how many times the dog was bred. I think I read that the ovulation period could last up to 11 days and if the female and male had unlimited access to one another it was possible to have pups in the same litter that were more than a week apart in actual developement.

The greatest dog I ever owned was a runt. I wouldn't mind getting another runt, if it has heart and determination.

the runts always seem to have something speacial that the other litter mates dont have. They might not be as strong or big, But usually have that little something special.

I've kept two runts, they were both the wildest of the litter.

    Nah,

They are just smaller is all, Not due to any lack of nutrients or that, Most always they catch up when they start nursing. But size like that has nothing to do with how the dog will turn out, The runt has the same chance as any other pup on how he will turn out.
