Dogs and Velvet and Steel would be a good read for $50 but its not worht the prices people paid for it on Ebay.

  12. I was actually surprised by the price tag of the book in e-bay and amazon so I was thinking there is probably something unique about it.

Dang i must be getting old i have books al the way back to a second repring from 1879 first reprint was in 1849,its a book called stonege on the dog it was i belive it was the first book about difrend breeds ecetera. in the back it contains kennel set ups witch would make you jalours today. iven the medical with herbs is awesome. got 30 years with the fighting dogs from armitage/ jack meeks/ the colby book/ and more real old books, and nearly al the modern books , have origenal Your frind and mines from 1950 upto the 60,s.i belive a couple of Tudors dibo pictures in a match are in ther as wel . do they count as wel:)

you would be better off spending the money on good collars, leads and dogfood, i used to get all the books and mags but to be honest it is not possible to learn anything from books that you can not learn better from getting out with the dogs and talking to folks who have been there and done it.hell loads of folks that write books did nothing with the dogs but once they write a book people see them as experts, after meeting some of them it shatters the illusion.

    by Ruth B. James

and a copy of the MVM if you have the patience to be thorough in your research.

I really enjoyed all the Stratton books.I remember I found out about some magazines to order from his books. He also talked alot about "Bulldog Fever":).I read those Stratton books cover to cover like a kid reading a comic book. For a while it was as close as I'd get to knowing what this breed was all about.I just ordered The Hollingsworth Dogs book from Cali Jack.I really like his comments over at the peds online forum.I'm going to pick up his other two books soon.

The book may seem a bit dated now to some people.I thought it was a very interesting read ,alot of nutrition stuff. If I remember right...Bob Stevens conditioning techniques are very extreme,he has a martial arts background and his dogs in the book were in top shape.I'd say the same as the others as far as price goes.If you are a collector though (i'd love to own this again) it's a very nice looking book and well put together (well made) like The Complete Gamedog book.I'd pay $150 for a Near Mint copy anyday.

    Limey LOLOL,
We're all getting there, I just start counting backwards every birthday now...lol (right Mike...lol)
I hear you, after carrying box loads of books and mags around since 76, I can open a box and it's like reading it brand new again..lol
I like them all (some just for a fond memory), but they can't come close to the knowledge learned hands on with a bulldog.

Wayne D Browns book, "History of the Pit Bull Terrier"
    Jack's SDJ's Champions 1972-1983
    Mercks Vet Manual

Maffei's books "The Life of Humbug" and "Red Tina"
Maf wrote some great articles in the old mags

Loved the old old YF&M and SDJ's (especially the White Casle Kids blazing articles and Don's stories, and the beginning ADBA mags

....and all the ones I forgot to mention...lol:o

    Yours in the fancy
