    I think a well bred
Patterdale or a Jack Russell would be better suited for the OP. "Game bred" apbt are NOT for everyone especially inexperienced owners. Either of the two breeds I just mentioned are a handful as well. Patts and Jacks are plenty of dog just in a smaller package. They also excel in small game hunting.

Well, I am going to play the devils advocate for a minute. I totally agree( not that it any of my business really) that another breed might suit him as well or better.

I could not agree more that a well bred gamebred dog makes an excellent family dog. DA and all. After all, any bully breed tends to be rather DA.
    Patterdales as well.

I agree that adopting is a good idea. However, mistakes can be made there and you get a dog home and he becomes food aggressive or "different" somehow.

I think my question would be more along the lines of have you ever dogsat or kept a gamebred APBT? Have you ever handled a really strong dog?
Have you ever had a dog that required a great deal of exercise?
Are you REALLY equipped with crates, tie outs, etc.
If not, I would wait until you have experienced all that.

It sounds snobby, but these dogs are just not for anybody that admires them. The OP sounds quite level headed and he has read a great deal. He sounds like a good owner, but I would never put a gamebred dog in a novices hands either without ALOT of investigation.
    Just my $0.2

i can understand where you all are coming from. thanks for your ideas and suggestions. it is always good to learn what you are getting into before you make that choice and regret it later. i will try and take all your advice on the apbt issues of da, high energy, containment, socialization, training and the works. only advice i will NOT take is to get another breed that may even be better for house dog and squirrel chaser! i will not adopt because of the uncertainty of the dog's previous life! anyways thank you all!

  4. Keep reading and learning about the breed. Go out and take the plunge on a well bred dog. Remember, love and time goes a long way with these animals..

everyone's concern is exactly that,... you get dog , realize its too much, try to keep it a while, mold it, later you say "we tried", (now dogs almost full grown, and BAM in to a shelter cause know body wants the half grown, problem dog, ....

just do you homework and take the time to teach your dog to be what you want them to be and you should have no problem....

Hell i got dogs here i wondering how they made it this far, cause you can't control them, but you have to stay with it, and work with the animal, don't just expect it to teach it self the rules of the house, and family..

you are in the control of that animals life! do so carefully, and respectfully.;)

you seem like you got a good head on your shoulders, just don't let you feelings/pride, get you into the mix when making the right choice for these dogs.

there are a tons of breeders that raise household pets, you have to do the research, without knowing yo , you won't get a list of breeders from anyone, JMO

  9. Here are some of things that you can look forward to if you get the well bred pup and think it will train itself. They can and will go through any window after squirrels, cats and other dogs. They can and will rip sheet rock off the walls of your home or apartment. They will pull up rugs to try to get under doors. They will chew any shoe, sock or article of clothing. They will scratch any lower cabinet in your home. They will pull anything off the counter and table that they view as a chew toy or food.

If he is a male he will lift his leg and lend his scent to most areas of your home. These are just some things to consider before the obvious ones with a bulldog.

all though i don't agree with him personally, (the guy in the second vid.)

    your choice affects others too!

  11. Great stuff. That lunatic is the type that would try to pour some antifreeze in the dogs water bowl.

As far as the coon hounds barking. I used to know someone that had a full proof cure to constant barking in his yard. IT was the crossman 760. A few days of that and the dogs would never bark again..

who are we to tell someone what dog they should or shouldn't want to own? hypothetically speaking about someone interested in the breed already of course, and may I assume you have looked into this breed by more then just a glance and a peek of info correct? I think most forget that we all started somewhere some have grown up with these dogs since they were children and had the help from their fathers, mothers, grandparents, friends etc to help stir them in the right directions and provide for them the information they need and want. Some took matters into their own hands because we knew know one who were serious with these dogs and did their homework and took the time to learn and endure patience before snatching something as a bulldog they found to be interesting. Either way we all started as a newbie and people overlook that much to much. Maybe this would be easier if we knew each other personally, but we don't so by automatically assuming from that basic question that started this thread, that this person is classified as an unfit owner to own an apbt is just pretty low in my eyes hardly anyone if know one (as I didn't read every single reply) tried to get to know this person a bit further as regarding their interest for the breed instead everyone threw another breed as if we are breed experts out of the bulldog world.

Sure we don't want to see the dog become homeless or abandoned or into a back yard breeders hands but as I said, how high do we know about this person's desire for the breed before assuming they are going to fail? if he said something stupid to any common sense like 'I want a red nose only because they seem to be the best ones" or "will a pit bull get along with my other dogs as he grows older" then yes he has a long way to go if he is really serious about the breed to one day maybe own it but asking about hands on does not mean your going to fail does it  because I seem to be doing just fine with my girl and she's my first and I never even took care of one a day in my life before she became mine and I have more then enough confidence to say I am doing everything this dog could need and more, so if you don't agree with how I feel well sorry I just thought I would give it a say.

So my advice would be if you know you are confident enough with your homework and by homework I mean prepared to take several finals if you had to, then choose wisely as to where your obtaining your puppy that may be the big factor here over not obtaining this breed in general. Once you do make your choice there is never a time to stop building your knowledge though, very important I would keep this site close as your dictionary but be wise and such ;) good luck!

see you dont even know what your talking about was it Zebo or Bullyson? you can change your mind if you like.

I would have never put any of my dogs in the situation where they would get close enough to attack. and even if i did they wouldnt attack anyway thats something i can say and know its the truth.

and yes your so right, Pitbulls do attack kids.....when dickheads like you own them.
the truth is your dog attacked a person and like many people who have dogs like that you say "they had never shown any signs of it before"
you probly just couldnt read the signs.
dont feel bad these dogs are not for everyone.

what do i do with my dogs? i make sure they dont attack people, which isnt that hard considering they are stable well bred dogs.

I don't feel the op wants the dog for his natural abilities and drives.someone said "if he wanted specifically a dog with a red nose" then they would be against him. What's the difference if it if it is Rudolph the red nose reindeer or popeye the rednose pit bull. this guy knows what he wants, a squirrel and family dog, yet he has no idea where to buy it. ,.... The op wants the mclaren f1 to drive around the rainforest with. What he said sounds like "ill take your advice on gas mileage, on shipping costs, on driving lessons, but no matter what! I'm getting that mclaren f1". Dude sounds like no matter what anybody says he's buying an apbt. This guy could smoke crack, live with his mother and grandmother, in an old age condominium where no dogs are allowed, in a bsl city. The point is, he is getting an apbt no matter what!
Fine act like that and see who give you dogs!!! Peddlers will I'm sure! Fk I'd give you a dog if you weren't so bent on having one for no reason!

Really how Much property do you have? Where in the state do you live? Urban rural?
Heck this guy sounds like racheal ray. Past present future, watch. Not even willing to find him a few good breeders to learn from. I didn't know shit when I started, I didn't just do like everyone else and buy a mutt, tell everyone its a pit bull, and add it to the 4000 euthanized eeach year. He doesn't sound like he's famos so maybe we won't end up with that much media coverage off of pet owners handling pit dogs like they were Lassie!

  20. nah.uhh

as much as you want to get into the dogs for all the wrong reasons, I hope a dogman, show OR working, will help this guy out, and I hope he'll listen.

Are you prepared for the absolute worst? Excluding a manbiter. What if your dog get into a fight with a neighbors dog? Or has entirely too much energy to actually play with kids or older people? What if your dog Bullys people and only likes people that will stand up to him.
will you embrace your dogs stupid amount of energy? Of drive? Will you be 100 percent a ok with your new dog hating everything in the world except for you? If you want to get into a breed like this, don't do it because you like what you've heard! Do it because you are up to the challenge.... Have you had/ do you have any dogs? If not, atleast makesure the breeder is willing to take the pup back if you can't handle it.
Sorry man, don't mean to doubt you, but your headstrung. You buy anything that looked like an apbt to you right now.. It probably doesn't even matter to you whether its parents were temperment tested cgc by peddlers, or dogmen that have 10 generations of selective breeding to a goal under their belt.
I'm done, we'll see how you do..
