What do you guys think about dogs that are either excitement biters or chain biters?

I'm talking about dogs that are good on short leash, in the house...but when out on the chain, on a long lead in open field, can show signs of getting really excited and nipping, jumping up?

Would you cull or put down such a dog?

I've visited a few yards where many of the dogmens bulldogs do this. They start whining, and when anybody comes near, the dog jumps up on people, and sometimes nips. Would you classify as maneater?

Can it be trained out? I'd be unsure/afraid to put down a good bulldog for these reasons unless of course I had children. Luckily I dont

Just an excited dog, Not a maneater. If you have children I'd keep them away from these highly excitable dogs' chain spots until they're old enough. That or teach the dog that it isn't ok to jump up. They will whine and wag their ass like crazy though.

This is just my opinion and is not necessarily right.
I think a maneater is a dog that puts a person in danger for their life.
An excited dog, a nippy dog, or a territorial dog should not be in the same class as a maneater.

do you know what causes the dog to act this way? is it a dominance/pack issue? I dont like the idea of a dog thinking it is ok to nip its owner/handler....

I don't know if you recall, but I had a post a month ago or more in which a buddy if mine has his apbt get overly excited from the long lead and open sapce which eventually led to random aggression...now i wonder if the chain aggression was a part of it

Dogs have a limited amount of ways to say hello and play. They nip because thats how they play with other dogs and unless you tell them otherwise that's what they'll do.

I know some people that are fine with it and encourage it. Its not out of malice, that dog is just damn happy to see you. I don't know many people that get as excited to see the same face day in and day out

I my self is not bothered by this i have had so many dogs in my life you can not say because a dog is a nibbler he is a people eater a matter of fact most of my dogs played with there teeth, that were game dogs and around my kids and i never had a accident so in my mine and not try to sound like the dog whipper but when it comes to dogs its about the energy you put out

thats interesting...how would one handle the situation if the dog's nips became more powerful...essentially at what point do you correct the dog, and how strong of a correction?

if you are uncomfortable with them nipping just slap the bridge of their nose and tell them no. too easy

id rather no dog nip an owner/handler...a nip to me may seem like a trex bite to a child, and the childs reaction may provoke more...any other advice on dealing with these situations?

You stop it when they're young. If the dog jumps up or nips then you give him a quick pop, firm no and quit fussing over him. If you don't let the dog know how to act when hes a pup then you're gonna have problems when hes older.

my dog knows he fcked up if he gets my fingers too hard when taking a treat. i don't have to say anything he just gives that "oh shit, my bad" look.

put it this way, much like Naustroms said, they have little other ways to communicate with us, a dogs' mouth is like our hands. Can it be trained out? yes. Should it be? That's all up to the owner. cull the dog because of it? IMO hell NO.

I understand what you guys are saying...there are some people that are strict on the rule of no teeth on human skin at all...and others that see as much of you have...my only concerns is to make sure how to correct it if it shows potential of being more than nipping, and leading into full out bites

i think it can be trained out just like dogs jumping on humans can be stopped... just give it some time with correction and see what happens

Are these dogs being walked, exercised on a regular basis (daily) I am not talking about taking them for a walk once a month or a year. Is this dog chained up and has been since puppyhood and knows nothing else????????

that's the best time to work a dog , right off the chain.. think about it, they aint seen you in a while, you come out and they wanna say whats up and get your attention. give the dog some attention, workem a lil bit, and use that time to correct the nipping, that way they know the best way to get you're attention is to sit the hell down and wait for you.

I know what I described is not a man eater...i just dont want it to possibly lead to being a man eater if im correcting too harsh or not enough

If you correct him too much, he'll either shut down completely or resent you, and not listen to you at all. IE, you can yell SIT SIT SIT all you want, but the dog stops listening after the first couple of 'sits'... If he learned that nipping gets him what he wants, he will continue to nip to get what he wants, and if he doesn't get it, he will nip harder. It isn't aggression, just bad dominance.
