GA: 27 Dogs Found Dead, 25 Injured In Washington County

    Investigators say they have busted up a big-time dog fighting ring in Washington County. The dogs were taken from a home on Ohoopee Church Road, in Washington County. That’s south of the city of Sandersville. WJBF News Channel 6’s Barclay Bishop reports.

    Sandersville, GA—The vet says the lives of these dogs consisted of no food or water, they were beaten, and living on 6 foot chains 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

    Dr. Robert Reisman, ASPCA: “Has an old injury to his left front leg that doesn’t allow him to use his leg at all.”

    This is just one of 26 dogs that were saved Wednesday morning. Doctor Robert Reisman of the ASPCA, quick to give them care.

    Dr. Reisman: “They’ve all been neglected to the point where if they’re not emaciated, they’re close to being emaciated, they were definitely not fed.”

    Washington County Sheriff Thomas Smith says the dogs were found chained in the backyard of this trailer near Sandersville in Washington County, where 52 year-old Billy Taylor Jr. lived.

    Sheriff Thomas Smith, Washington County Sheriff’s Office: “He did not pay any rent on his home, so long they could bring the dogs there.”

    Sheriff Smith says the property was a dumping ground for fight dogs.

    Sheriff Smith: “And then continuing the investigation, we found 26 or 27 dogs that were buried.”

    Tim Rickey, ASPCA Senior Director, Field Investigation Response Department: “Some of the dogs here had died here just as recently as a few days ago. Other dogs we’ve seen would have died within a few days. This was a terrible situation for these animals.”

    Prior to Wednesday morning, the sheriff’s office contacted the ASPCA, and United Animal Nations. They set up an emergency kennel in a nearby store, preparing for the raid.

    Janell Matthies, United Animal Nations, Emergency Services Manager: “I’m just thankful that we have them in our care, we’ll be able to rehabilitate them, get them healthier, get them much more comfortable, right away.”

    When officials arrived on the scene, they say they knew they had a big case on their hand…but now these animals are safe. And all involved say they’ll make sure justice is served.

    Sheriff Smith: “I’ve been sheriff for 14 years, and I was just amazed and also mad at the same time. Because, I can’t understand how anyone can do this to an animal. An innocent animal, being treated the way these dogs were treated.”

    Rickey: “Tonight they’ll be in a warm environment with people that actually do care about them.”

    Taylor is a convicted felon, and will be facing a whole slew of charges. The investigation is on going, and more arrests are expected. The dogs will be taken to be rehabilitated.

    Perhaps Bdub if you pulled you head out or your rear long enough to read the story you will read that many of the dogs had wounds and injuries consistant with dog fighting.

    I pray to GOD you do not own a pit, as your irresponsible and sarcastic response shows you have no concern for the welfare of pits.

    cold sores are evidence of herpies but they dont itch like there STD cousins so whats your point?

    your on a game-dog site where most owners here are accepting to dogfighting. i often here the remark "you wouldnt make your kids fight" but then i bring up the former war draft and the fact that you can donate your 17 year old CHILD to fight in the millitary, so whats any different?

    Bdub im with you on this one aint no big time drug dealer gonna be driveing a beatdown hoopty so what makes you think a big time dog fighter is gonna have some starved half dead dogs to fight? He'll lose his money every time fighting them dogs i saw on video hints he'll be hustling back wards dat was just a drunk old man that finds pits and chain them in his yard to die just like a cat collecter!

    maganacare,your obviously as illiterate,there was nothing in this that said anything about these dogs having wounds and injuries consistant with dog fighting. unless you think that the "old injury on the dogs leg " is consistant with dog fighting.which i doubt it is.so i guess since i point out the fact that there was no evidence of dogfighting im irresponsbile,ohh if you only had a brain

    Someone just took on more animals than they could feed and care for properly. No more no less. Media loves to paint the dogfighter picture for people who don't know any better. Also considering the number of animals and their tendency to injure themselves and their yard mates; That explains the "injuries consistent with dogfighting". I applaud anyone who helps neglected animals but I'm so so tired of the sensationalism. But sensationalism sells huh.

    Yeah it didnt look like those dogs were being fought but the ones they did show looked like they were in terrible condition. That story was more realistic then most ive seen. Like with FB and PP's dogs they called those dogs emaciated and all looked to be in perfect health.

    Well they said dogs were buried in the yard and the man who live there said they he could stay free if he let whoever keep and bury dogs there. Sounds like these dogs lost fights and were brought there as a form of punishment to starve to death. IMO. Not the gospel!

    i watched the viedo to me the media didn't play this one up as much as they could have ,this looks like the result of a hoarder i wonder what the inside of his house looks like,, i'd call the guy retarted but that would be an insult to all the unfortionally challanged people ,, the guys brain dead
