how much does everybody usually let theyre dogs gain for the winter? I didn't realise it until today but my dog has gained almost 10 pounds. Looks like i should probably cut it back a few.

To be honest he doesnt look like he gained that much thats why i was surprised when i saw he gained 7. He normaly weighs between 47-50, and right now hes up to 57. Im going to start puling back on the food, and start working with him again.

Mine usually get around 3-4 maybe 5 lbs heavier in the winter, dogs outside can burn more calories than you'd believe just from shivering during cold months.

i use 10% of body weight, (chainweight NOT conditioned weight) as a rule of thumb

i only allow them to gain 2-5 pounds, to much weight is hard to take of in the spring. With the insulated dogs houses that i make, they have been doing great with only about 3 lbs of fat. JMO

if dogs are kept outside during the winter they need to be fat, hog fat, so fat you can't see their ribs and then some.
if I have a dog that is 40lb. (conditioned wt.) that dog will be around 55lb. outside on the chain from november till march. the same 40lb (conditioned wt.) dog would probably be around 43-47lb. chain wt. during the rest of the year.
don't worry about getting them "too fat". dogs lose weight easily in the spring. adjust your feed and exercise the dog and the weight will be off in less than 4 weeks.

I put 5 lbs. on mine starting in the late fall. Our winters are vicious here and i never had an issue. I think 10 lbs. is a bit excessive but your the one who has to strip the weight back off in the spring not me. lol

10 seems kinda too much..i keep mine in the basement tho..and its hard to make them eat more than they usually eat unless I'm feeding raw.

I add roughly 5 pounds per dog, I don't weigh to make sure it's exactly 5 but that's what it ends up being. When I stayed in a colder climate I'm pretty sure my dogs had about 7-8 pounds more during the winter months. Like stated above, my houses are stuffed full of straw when it gets really cold here. Stuffed so much they have to push their way in.

I put ten pounds on my twentyfive pounder...
    # answers seem silly considering the w8 range and 10% to 15% bodywieght sounds better as RallyRacer mentioned on top of the cw...
Different dogs and climates change things considerbly and should be adjusted accordingly...

Maybe I'm confused because it's early but you just said answers seem silly and rallyracer's suggestion sounds the best but in the same breath you said you put 10 pounds on a 25 pound dog. That is a lot more than 10-15% that you claim is the ideal amount.

I feed them until they look plump. Till you can't easily feel ribs and have to push. Ive been attempting to fatten dogs and a few are proving difficult lol
