Would you rather...

Something to think about. Lets say care and ur money are not issues and the choices of pups are from quality breeders and quality parents on both sides.......

Would u rather start your line with 2 unproven pups from quality specimens that u have interacted with from small time quality breeders, watch them grow, work them, learn all u can about them, make sure they have everything u want between the 2 of them, breed them keep the pups and make a name for yourself with time and hardwork.....

OR

Would you rather get 2 well bred pups from a big name that has already established a quality line of dogs and work them, get as much info from there breeder and do your breedings according to what the line has already proven to work with............

I have my own opinions but i figured i'd get the debate ball rolling so which would YOU rather???

Dont really care if I make a name for myself I just like quality dogs.

I'm not sure what the difference is between choice one and two other then one would be from a small time breeder and the other one would be from a bigger name. I would choose the one who had the dogs i'd liked for the price i wanted to pay. If the smaller kennels had a stud i wanted one off of i wouldnt overlook him because he wasnt as known name. I think to many people put to much stock in who has the dogs and not enough stock in the dogs themselves.

im a lil confused....when u say 2 unproven pups wtf r u talking about? u mean no papers? u mean untested? off cur parents? im not sure so ill just tell u how i would do it.

id buy a grown female that has produced a few good litters (when bred to different lines). Id take that female and breed it to a male that is producing well from similar lines and clicks well with my bitches blood. Have the litter and raise all of them to full grown dogs putting them all thru your own tests.

I think the question is pups off a "Brand name" line or pups from a not famous bloodline... Both being from "quality" stock... Its that SOME people are turned off by brand name and some are turned on by brand name... What's your preference...? Is what I think he's asking....

So both both are well bred off of proven parents. The only difference is one you are more hands on and from a small yard and the other is off a big time breeder.

If both dogs are bred the exact same way, I'll probably go with the small yard. Because in the scenario its sounds like we're good friends and I could probably get the pups for next to nothing.

IMO, I your better off buying yourself (seeing as money isn't an option in this hypothetical situaion) a proven adult Bitch and start by breeding her to top notch studs.
Either way, option 1 or option 2 your taking a gamble. Just because someone runs a large kennel and their name is out there don't mean you can't get a great dog from a small time breeder, good dogs are where you find them. With an adult you can start immediatly and with the pups it's a long expensive gamble that those pups even turn out to be what your looking for because if they don't, you just wasted several years of your time and now have to start back at square one.......JM2C

I got Pups Off a Small Time Kennel, But they got there dogs Off Bigger Name Kennels, What does that make me!

I think a Small Kennel Could be equally good!

And in some cases(not always) if not better sometimes like stated above more hands on with their dogs(Some Times, Not Always),

And might have a better chance & opportunity to fully test each specimen.

The more you spend with your dogs the more you learn what your dealing with I believe anyway.

No matter what your choice your still waiting to see what you got!

i would rather start with a small time kennels,with hands on and i'll know what i'm getting.thing is with big time kennels that may have to ship to you,there's a change you could be getting a good ped vise-verses a good dog.JMO.

Ok here comes an attempt at clarity....

I think rooster has the idea, would u rather have a brand name pup or a non brand name. I got mine from a smaller breeder because i wanted to be able to have my own line and build my reputation on great dogs not great names.

You can't make a name for yourself. It is illegal. The only place your name will go is in the local paper when you get arrested. The dog game isn't about making a name for yourself, it's about the dogs.

wardogs got it right, but i agree with agk.
you got pups, you don't think about starting a line of dogs based on pups.
you can't just buy a male and female pup and just breed them when they're old enough. lol..well you could, and i know it goes on all the time, but your just going to contribute to the poorer quality of dogs that are out there already.
money aint an option, if this is really the case, purchase the best of dogs that someone, if your lucky may let go. or as agk say's, purchase a well bred proven bitch and pay what you need for the best stud out there. i would completely forget about the attempt with starting out with two pups. matter of fact, i wouldn't even concider it.

 

The last thing on my mind when getting a pup is breeding it.
I'm thinking diet and how much damage its going to do to my house before it goes on the chain.
As far as big yard, small yard for what I would be looking for the dogs would likely be down from the same lines anyway so it wouldn't really make a difference to me. I would prefer getting a pup from a breeding that has produced good litters already where they come from is unimportant.

when buying a pup, u want it off 2 good game parents. I would be hesitant to buy a pup in most cases if i hadnt seen the parents work or know someone who had. its easier to gain the trust of a low profile small timer cuz they arent in a business, its a hobby/passion.

I would rather deal with a small time breeder that isnt putting out 100's of dogs a year. Its not to say a peddler isnt peddlin good dogs but its not my cup of tea.

As for making ur own line it takes generations, the main thing you want to do is throw high percentage bulldogs. that being said big name dogs are big name dogs for a reason, they throw high percentages. u can take a chance on some other stuff and it might work out but chances are you are gonna end up wasting time and money.
