New Pup-dog dominant already?!

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by factorynew, Feb 4, 2010.

  1. We just adopted another "Pitt" type dog. He is ten weeks old and was neutered and had his ears cropped yesterday. We have only had him a couple of hours and he is already going full bore. At roughly ten pounds he is initiating rough play from our 115 pound Boerboel. He is also already mounting and trying to climb on the back of our other dog which is a 3 year old 60 pound Staff-pitt male.

I have no idea if he has any game dog in him. I was wondering if game bred dogs that are truly DA behave this way when they are this young?

Game doesn't mean aggression plenty of game dogs are friendly. As you asked such a question I dought you've experiance in showing game dogs ;) think it'll be best to train your pup to get on with others. Better life for the pup and easier one for you. Best of luck and hope I didn't ofend.

no, dominance is just that. u can have a dominant poodle for real. its just an attitude a dog has.

  4. Well, If I had any experience with them, I wouldn't be asking any questions.....which is why I'm asking:). Basically I'm just trying to figure out the best approach to training him. If is truly DA, then I will do everything I can to make sure he has a happy home here and gets along well with our other dogs.

I have fostered over 60 pit bull type puppies in the last couple years and what you are describing is just a puppy playing. I think you need to let him grow up a little and get him in an obedience class before you label him dominant. Some of the most dominant puppies grow up to be very layed back dogs and some of the most layed back puppies turn out very DA.

You adopted him and the organization allowed you to crop his ears?

  7. I haven't labeled him dominant. The only thing I have labeled him is a Pitt type pup. I'm simply asking if game bred dogs that eventually turn out to be DA act in a similar fashion when young.

What was just explained to you is your pup is showing dominance by trying to hump your other dogs gameness has nothing to do with that all breeds of dogs will do that its pack mentality and doesnt have anything to do with the word gameness.

  9. Most puppies go through that stage in order to establish dominance in the pack. Its up to you to become the dominant one over him and the rest of your dogs. My male was very laid back growing up, but now at 2 1/2 yrs old he is very DA. I stop it before it escalates but i also know my dog & do not put him with dogs he does not know. He lives at home with two female dogs one being another pit and one being the chihuahua. In my pack I'm the leader then its the chihuahua LOL yes it sounds funny but true the two pits respect the chihuahua more than the respect each other. Best of luck with you new pup.

dominance has nothing to do with game..... i dont think people truly understand the definition of the word GAME... like that one girl that said her 6 month old puppy was not a cur and she was game .....btw i am not saying you said your dog is game.... just let him be a puppy and do some obediance

  11. I guess I am just a little surprised by how scrappy he is, maybe even a little alarmed. But I am learning quickly on the job and he is very responsive to being disciplined. Unlike our Boerboel -- whom generally could give a rats A** :).

I think your dog is a beauty though. :) Grats with him.

I just wondering, what is this DA syndrom you all speak about? Can someone explain it.
