I had one living under my house once My bitch would bark her head off and scratch at the soil where he was at for weeks. One day I let her out, she reached right under the porch and shook the hell out of the SOB. It was over pretty quick but yea those things do have some teeth on em. The one she took was covered in potting soil so all you could see was eyes and teeth.

To this day my pups taken a ground hog, a few birds and maybe 10 or 12 rats.

Ha its just a possum. I mean I wouldn't want to be locked in a closet with one but they aren't much to write home about. I've heard that mother possums will fight and protect their young but I haven't run across one. Another thing to consider is that the possum could have been playing dead, where did you get rid of it?

true ... i have had a couple people tell me that them things put up a fight.... maybe it was a racoon???? i picked it up with a shovel and buried it...... plus i live out in the city, i dont come across wild animals often. they kid of spooky lookin

I'll give you that. They are spooky as hell. Don't see how some people get the nerve to eat them.

They usually "play dead" if given the chance. A serious minded pup could kill one easily. I stay in a wooded area and I check the dog's houses daily to see if they've killed something and cached it in their house. I've found large rat snakes, raccon, and possum. DOA

they keep the animals in their houses?ha ha i think she would have eaten the thing if i would have left her. i think it was racoons that put up a fight then. how big racoons get? maybe 20 pounds?

it was probably "playing possum", my dog got a hold of one and it went limp, got her to put it on the ground. Kept on walking turned back and saw it walk off...

I used to hunt the nasty things back when the hides were worth 3 or 4 bucks each.Out in the open they usually "play possum" It's nothing for a hound to kill one,let alone a bulldog.I've even kicked them and they curl up and play dead. But they will put up a better fight when cornered in a hole or something, they don't play possum there.A dog and coon is alot more interesting but still no match for a good dog,but an inexperianced pup or smaller dog will learn a thing or two on his first coon.

Actually,I do know people that eat them on occasion.Meat is clean once you skin it.

It depends on your location and their food supply on how big they get.Where I hunt in southern Missouri and northern Arkansas, the food supply is pretty much what they find in the woods and streams,so they're not as big as the ones farther north. Most I've caught have ranged from 14 to 20 pounds average,my personal biggest was a big 29 pounder that only had 3 feet.He apparently lost one in a trap at some point. My cousin used to hunt up towards Iowa and with all the corn grown up there,he used to catch some 25 to 30 pounds fairly often. It seems like they just averaged a few pounds bigger up there.Where he was hunting, they were eating like pigs.
