anybody feed pork as a main ingrediant

Discussion in 'Health & Nutrition' started by sandman221, Dec 9, 2009.

1. just wondering, my lil sis bf works for a meat packing company and they deal with a lot of pork and throw away a ton of scraps. its mostly smaller peices of meat with quite a bit of fat still attached and femurs with quite a bit of meat and fat still on them. i did some reading on pork and said it will make ur dog sick etc etc, so i was wondering if anyone here feeds pork regulary with any ill effects. thanks a bunch.

2. I do when I can get it cheap enough, some pork cuts can be very fatty so I trim any excessive fat off.

3 Reasons Why People Say Don't Feed Pork to Dogs:

1. Parasites - Trichinellosis, also called trichinosis, is caused by eating raw or undercooked meat of animals infected with the larvae of a species of worm called Trichinella. Infection occurs commonly in certain wild carnivorous (meat-eating) animals but may also occur in domestic pigs.

This is much more prevalent in wild meat, but to be safe - freeze any pork products you plan on feeding your dog for at least 1 week (better to be a month if you're that worried) to kill off the parasites if they are present in the meat, before you feed it to your dogs.

2. Sodium Nitrate - a derivative of salt, and usually caused by curing meatss in salt, abundant in bacon, hotdogs and other non cold/fresh cuts, not really deadly for your dogs, unless ur feeding them shitloads of the stuff, but not healthy all the same.

3. Fat Content - Pork is fatty as hell, make sure you trim all excess fat and try and get lean cuts for your dog, fatty scraps are no good, if you can get trotters or left overs from cuts that humans eat, go for it.

I feed my dogs pork, in a rotation with other raw foods, all of its non fatty, cold/fresh cuts that are frozen before feeding - cover your ass and its not a problem and easy to take the precautions necessary, since I usually get my meat in bulk (for the dogs) it all goes in the freezer anyway so its really not a big deal.

And to be honest, the chances of them getting serious problems from any of the above, are kinda slimish - but, better to be safe than sorry, I know I'd rather just do some easy shit like freeze my meat and make sure its lean and non salt cured before feeding it to em, than have a dead dog on my hands due to my lazyness/ignorance.

In short: feed it to them if you're getting it cheap/free - just follow the guidelines I told ya above and you'll be all gravy.

Oooh and one last thing, some dogs have something against pork, I dunno what it is, but theres more than a few stories out there of dogs shitting up a storm and getting stomach problems from pork. So make sure you do a test batch before you go buying kilos of the stuff and feed it too them for a week, on a rotation, keep an eye on their stools and make sure they're all good and happy :)

Good advice. I have dogs that have something against pork, so believe it. No more than two days in a row before moving on to something else is the rule I try to follow, and it seems to help most. Spot on advise.

pork with the fat trimmed is some of the leanest meat you can get. I suggest leaving a bit on but trimming as you see fit.

i see no problem with feeding pork.

6. ya its all human grade, and its free. they are just gonna throw it out so i thought i might give it a go. its pretty fatty but there is a good amount of meat. its the stuff they trim off before they package it. and i dont believe its been cured at all. i could b wrong. would i be able to tell just by looking at it if it was cured?

thanks for the help

agree. Bacon and Ham are cured meats and cured meats should always be in moderation. Fresh cuts of pork, trimmed, is quite healthy. Thats why they refer to it as the OTHER white meat ;).

I don't eat myself so I wouldn't feed it to my dogs. I believe it's unhealthy and the dog can't tell you his head is hurting from high blood pressure.:)

i have fed it for several years now. not exclusiely but quite a bit. i have seen no ill effects from it. once or twice a week i get a app. 40lb box of scraps from a butcher (buddy)...the box has everything from chicken to ribeye ends, hocks to shoulders, hamburger to bacon, sausage to ribs...pretty much whayever is left over, or reaches an expiration date. i feed whatever is on top the day i get it and freeze the rest to feed over the next weeks or so....never had any problems with pork....s

You should leave the fat on there. That is one of the best sources of energy for your dog.

anything comming off a pig is going to have a high chance of roundworms unless its cooked thoroughly or deep froze properly

my dogs have always gone crazy for pig heads, everything gets eaten apart from the teeth. get the skin taken off and its a good meal once a week

16. I only trim off what I would consider excessive fat.My dog does better with leaner cuts, that's why he is mainly fed on kangaroo. He gets most of his fat from whole raw eggs and raw sardines.

17. the stuff that ive been getting has excessive fat on it so i cut abit off aswell.

18. Yeah,I don't trim anything off lean cuts of pork, but a few weeks ago I got a few kilos of spare ribs for a really good price and I had to trim them back a bit.
