Problem with crate training.

Discussion in 'Training & Behavior' started by SavannahRayne, Dec 2, 2009.

  1. I have succesfully crate trained and house broken two of my four dogs and one of my puppies is doing very well with his training. But the other one, Wolfie, is giving me problems and i don't know what to do.

He Seems to be pulling the same thing his mother did as a pup, but at a more persistent level. No matter how often or long i let him outside to use the bathroom for he never goes, but when he gets back in his crate he eliminates within 10 minutes.

When His mother did this I asked the vet what I should do and she told me to leave her in there with the eliminations for about twenty to thirty minutes before cleaning it out and giving her a bath because a dog does not like to eat and sleep where it eliminates. This worked wonders with Anghellica, but Wolfie seems not to notice and simply plays in the mess or attempts to hide it under his food bowl. I have never punished him for messing his crate so i don't know what's with the hiding it thing.

I feel like i am failing him even though i have done everything i know to do.

I don't know why he seems determined that his crate is his doggy version of a litter box other than his mother's example of going to the bathroom in the pen (albeit in a corner far away from both the food and pups, where she never let them near for the entire time they were in there) when they were first born out of a refusal to leave sight and hearing range of her first litter.

Has anyone else dealt with something like this? If so, please help a desperate woman to give all her dogs a happy, healthy environment?

Thanks in advance for any help and advice offered.

He should have no bowls what so ever inside the crate, not even water. This will make him go to the bathroom. While out side tell him in a firm voice to potty and wait him out, once he goes LIGHTLY praise him and go about your day. I hope this helps, good luck.

Yeah X2, don't put any water or food in the crate. You have other dogs that use the yard and he still won't go outside? Is he a really young pup?

No food or water in the crate. Clean out the crate with a enzymatic cleaner, such as Natures Miracle.

  5. he is 4 months old but his brother from the same litter goes outside just fine. He refuses.

Just because they are from the same litter, doesn't mean they will behave the same way.:)

When you take the other dog outside, take the pup too. Maybe the pup can learn from the older dog. When the pup does "go", give alot of praise.

Sounds like you have a dirty dog on your hands there, These types pop up quite a bit.

I would just wait him out like was already stated, And don't feed him or water him in the crate. Crates are for sleeping and travel not for eating and drinking.

  8. thanks for all your advice!! A friend suggested to me that it may be his way of saying that he is not getting as much time as he needs with me. I am doing a crate and rotate routine because my female is coming off what the vet called a postnatal heat. I get up around 8 in the morning and let the males out for about an hour and then my female starts the rotation, each dog is out for two hours before going back into their crate so that the other dogs can have free time. this goes on until about 10 pm or so and then the 3 males get to go play outside until midnight since they all seem to prefer hanging out there after dark more than in the morning when there are cars and dump trucks going through the alley. Am i not giving them enough time out? is it possible that is his problem?

Note: I should mention that their first rotation includes an hour and a half walk for all 4 dogs, sometimes they get another walk on their second rotation if they are still uber-excited and racing around the house. ( i don't know all the technical terms, though i am learning so much from this site. Thanks again!)

  10. Put the dog on a leash when it's time to go out and don't give in. Food in, poop out, water in, pee out. I would keep the pup in the crate all the time, only letting it out to go to the bathroom for a few days. Should fix your problem.

  12. I could care less if you take the advice or not. You've obviously already fooked it up now you have undo your mistakes.

    1. Keep the dog in the crate.
    2. Remove dog approx every 2 hours to go to the bathroom.
    3. Praise the dog when it goes outside like it's supposed to
    4. Put dog back in crate.

I can crate train a puppy in less than a week. If you can't, it's not the dogs fault, it's the person doing the training.

Also, if the dog is in a crate bigger than enough room to stand and turn around in, put it in a smaller one. The reason you are not having success is because you don't know what you're doing. A few days of what you think may sound mean will fix the problem for good.

So Dreamer "don't think so" you might want to step back and re-evaluate your methods that have already failed you and your dog.
