what about iams or natural choice

  2. Thanks Bnd, Kirkland looks like it's a great food for the money. I'm currently feeding Exceed from Sam's Club. My dogs are doing great on Exceed. I may try Kirkland one day when I get a Costco card. For $16, how big are they bags of Kirkland?

Both are good... as Texas advised earlier do a search for "dog food" and read some prior threads... there is alot of good information there... Not everyone has the same results with each food. I know alot of people who use IAMS, Nutro... I use Diamond... there is alot of good feeds out there, just find what works best for you... and stay away from the "popular" brands...

40lb bags for $16. I've fed Canidae as well as several different versions of Wellness and this feed is comparable especially when you take money into account. My dogs all do really well on it or I wouldn't be feeding it. This food would cost considerably more if Costco wasn't buying so much bulk and selling through their stores.

    Regards,

Ok i have to disagree with you here. Why should a mutt get a less quality food than any other type of dog? My pit is fed the same food that my other 3 mutts are fed. All 4 dogs are in good shape and condition. My oldest dog just turned 14yrs old (he weighs 50lbs) and he has been eating store brand food for his entire life and he has never had any major health problems.

  10. I think ppl just don't value mutts as much as they do purebred dogs, in general.

Pitbulls should in no way be fed the same food as most other dogs, would a skinny person eat the same diet as a muscularly developed and active athlete type? offcourse not. Pitbulls are preformance made dogs, they are much more active and have alot more muscle tissue than the average dog breed. They require high quality food and nothing less, not only that but many pitbulls have issues with their skin and allergies which also requires some good supplements in their diet. I think most people here would agree that pitbulls are an athletic made dog and need food that has a little more than food fed to a poodle, but who knows maybe your right?

Now in my opinion if your pitbull has been healthy and even is living at a good age, I would say you are a lucky few. Most pitbulls I see in public that look like crap I always find out that they are being fed some crappy food and when I see this I always try to educate the owner on the importance of good quality food for their dog, 9 out of 10 times it's the persons first pitbull. I don't mean go buy the most expensive food, but I would certainly say to anyone I meet to not feed a pitbull the same food as a little poodle or any other breed of dog that is not similar in its activity level and muscle tone. Pitbulls should be fed whatever food you find that is made for them, not just anything.

    rocksteady I'll drink to that..

actually ,while all breeds of dogs should have good food..they type of food will be based on the level of activity each dog gets. For example, whether the dog be a poodle, apbt or lab, if the dog is working (and yes, there are still working poodles out there. Dont hate on the stanard poodle. actually they were once good hunting / retriever dogs ..they do well in agility, too)

but you would not feed you house dog the same as an currently active weight pull dog..

its all the protein. fat . carb ratio one needs to watch and the amount of food.

Pedigree isnt good for ANY breed or mix breed dog. Its junk food.

I agree but would also like to point out to everyone just in case they don't know that there is also small, medium, and large breed types you have to choose from sometimes. Also maybe it's just me but I have noticed that pitbulls in general can have a number of skin issues and just the type of food you give them can either allow them to form or keep them free of problems. In my opinion pitbulls to me are built like athletes in people, they should always be fed high quality food with the particular type depending on their activity level. All I know is that most pitbulls that looked like crap were being fed a type of food meant for a different breed of dog.

My pit is only a year old. The 14 yr old one is a husky/chow mix. I lied in my last post. My oldest dog, my pit and my mutt girl eat the same food. My mutt boy eats Diamond Lamb and Rice because he has a sensitive stomach.

husky/chow and a pitbull living together, man watch them close since your pitbull is getting to that age. Why not feed the Diamond to your pit? Many people feed Diamond to pitbulls, the ones I seen are very healthy.

Sureno, don't feel bad - I used to feed Pedigree until people on this board clued me in. Mine are doing well now on Diamond, available and affordable at most feed stores.

Good job Idgie, you'll see the difference real quick. An open mind is a good thing, you'll get alot of knowledge from here, keep taking in what you believe. Nice to see someone applying the sites information for the good of the breed. Glad to see you care for your dog, unlike alot of people in the world. :)

I'd say the worst food there is is Kibbles N' Bits lol. Thats junk ass food.
Whatever you choose to feed, read the labels good. If the number one ingredients are fillers (corn, barley, refined cereals) DONT buy it. You want good meat as your #1 ingredient. Fillers cause excessive smelly stools :P

I havent had a problem with any of my dogs as of yet. My two mutts are pit/chow/lab mixes. My husky/chow is one of the sweetest dogs you could ever meet. Loves everyone. My pit is a female so i dont think that there will ever be much of a problem between them.

I dont feed my pit the diamond because i am on a limited budget. Right now i feed my dogs food from the local mill. I havent had a problem with it yet and all my dogs are keeping the weight on. Everyone is healthy. Daisy, my pit, is solid muscle. Well she has a bit of a pot belly but we wont go there. lol
