i hope i have this in the right place but i just have a question. yesterday i got one of my pups ears cropped and this was the first time ihave never had it done. when i picked him up his ears wasnt wrapped and when i asked bout needing to put anything on his ears to protect them from infection the vet said i really didnt need anything but if i felt like there was a problem to bring him back and they would wrap them. So my question is has anyone ever had problems w healing, infections, or keeping the cuts clean and if so what did you do? thanks for any help that anyone has.

    its not a problem really
just peel the thick scab off daily and clean well with water and peroxide
mixed so you only get a slight fuzz

the reason for peeling the scab is so the ears will not start to fold and bunch up
stop pelling when the scab gets thin and bends freely with the ear

I self administer penicilen(sp) as that helps to ward off infection

1 1/2cc for pups 21lbs once every two weeks

but I never wrapped the ears just let them do they own thing and clean everyday

and get some kind of topical ointment to put on the ears after cleaning it should help with the flys a little

I had more trouble with the dog keeping the bandage on than with infection, also keeping the suture in, I had a bitch that took her dew claw and would pull the suture all the way out with it. I never cropped a dogs ears after her, that was in 99. It's too much of a pain in the ass when healing, expensive here along with them not doing battle crops just the longer show crop, and I perfer the softer look to them with the ears, their more expressionate with the ear.

Never bandage with the sutures in it. After they come up, you can tape for posting or use the mole-foam method ("no-tape") if they're not standing. Do not administer antibiotics without consulting a veterinarian first, please.

i have had a couple of my dogs ears cropped, and NEVER felt the need to pick scabs off. i just cleaned (gently) with soap and water, and occasionally misted with a spray bottle filled 50/50 peroxide and water.

you do not use antibiotics in this way. they do not work like that and you are wasting your time. infact you may do more harm than good.

Little info on anitbiotics and what they do <O:p</O:p

Antibiotics Stop infection one of two ways. Either by inhibiting the Spread and growth of bacteria (thereby allowing the bacteria to die off naturally and be destroyed by the body's immune system) or by actually killing the bacteria by means of bacterial death upon contact with certain concentrations of drugs. Antibiotics that use the first method are called bacteriostatic drugs. The ones that kill bacteria are called bactericidal. It is not important for you to know which antibiotics fall into which class. What is important is this, in both methods of stopping infection some bacteria are hardier and take longer to kill or die. These bacteria will live on if antibiotics are discontinued to soon. These few bacteria that were not destroyed will begin to reproduce and in some cases after having been exposed to one antibiotic will build their own immunity to that antibiotic. This is called building resistance and is why chemists have to Keep coming up with new drugs year after year. The old drugs Stop working after a while.

I had an Immunologist from the Academy of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com[IMG]Health Sciences</st1:PlaceName></ST1:p tell me that approximately 75 percent of all the bacteria he cultures comes up resistant to Penicillin. That means Penicillin will not do squat to about 75 percent of the infections out there. What this means to you and me is this. If we are going to use an antibiotic we'd best use it correctly cause we can only mess up a few times then our dog will be screwed because we will not have anything to give him that will work. What this adds up to is making sure you give the drug at a proper dose for the proper amount of time. The proper amount of time generally means giving it at least 7 days or for 3 days after you see no more signs of infection if the drugs are given more than 7 days.

This is important so I will give examples. You have a dog that gets an infected bite. The wound is Red, swollen and oozing puss. You put him on an antibiotic and in 3 days the wound looks great, no more puss, it's not Red and the swelling went down. You DO NOT Stop the antibiotics. You give them a full 7 days.

OK, suppose your dog has an ear infection, you start antibiotics. On the 7th day of giving them he seems to be 100% healed. DON'T Stop. You give them 3 more days for a total of 10 days. One more time. You have a dog with infected mammary glands. You start the drugs and Keep giving them for 14 days cause your vet said 14 days the last time this happened. But at 14 days they are still infected so Keep giving the antibiotics until you see NO signs of infection and then go 3 more days. This is to ensure absolutely 100% of the germs are killed. If any survive they may become resistant and then the drug you used will be no good if the infection comes back.

PENICILLN G: Penicillin is good to use only in the injectable form. It is only valuable as a preventative agent. It will NOT work well to treat wounds that are already infected and if it does work once it will not work on the same dog twice. The best use for this is to give it right after damage occurs along with a good anti-bacterial bath or scrub. The injectable dose on Penicillin G is listed in "units" the product you have may come in a strength of 10,000 units per ML or some other strength higher or lower so check the bottle. Also there are different types on the market and they all stay in the body different lengths of time. Compare your bottle to the list below for how often you must give it. They all should be given in the muscle but can be given under the skin if the dog reacts to the pain of the injection. This is a product you may obtain through some catalogues.

The dose is 10,000 units per pound for these types:
Penicillin G potassium, give every 6 hours
Penicillin G sodium, give every 6 hours
Penicillin G procaine, give every 24 hrs
The dose is 20,000 units per pound for this type:
Penicillin G benzathine, give this every 5 days.
The trade names differ on each product so read the labels. DO NOT mix this drug with other antibiotics.

For my dogs I would put neosporin and then just massage the ears. Also with the neosporin I would rub off any scabs. Can't wait to see pics of your pup..

Light vasaline will keep down on the scabs and prevent the ears from itching so badly or at least that has worked for me on a few of my dogs

I have no experience with cropped ears but I must say that I do like that crop on that puppy. I like longer crops than a short one. Good luck and take care. The vet I work for will no longer crop ears because he thinks people don't take good enough care of them. I hear it's a lot of work. But then again, he's very critical of his own work.

I wash them daily with warm water and anitabcterial soap. I also put this mixture on at least 2 times a day
equal parts, triple anitbiotic ointment, preperation H, put a good bit on but not too much. help ward of infection your cut will heal clean and the Prep.H keeps the swelling down.

i wanted his ears cropped because he did have( what i thought to be) over sized ears that stood up like a rabbit then one started to fall over all the time. i looked around at a few dogs and decided that i thought he would look better w a crop. its the 1st time i have ever had ears cropped and i got him for shows so i decided to go with that look.

Gorgeous crop! Ryker's ears looked huge when he was first done at 12 weeks. He grew into them with his big ol' lug head.

China's were big too. I found some old pics of her today right after, I'll have to put some up.

Edit: This one that was in the Gallery.

I think they look good too. They look perfectly straight. One tip though. Don't try and remove the scabs on the edges or you will end up not having any hair there. Just let them come off by there self.
