Dogs of today - better or worse?

There is no doubt dogs of today are better. For one alot of dogs that went out dg in the old days would have made it with today's technology. Hence dogs are able to hunt longer and swim deeper. Add that to the fact today's dogs have better tools on average you can plainly see how the gamedog is better today. To give an example Jim wimberly said Tudors spike couldn't even start pit general. Imagine how far we have come since the generals time.

Ugh.... Too many people like to romanticize the past. The dogs of today are far better.

If the majority of the dogs are not better today, then the last two hundred years of selective,line and family breeding have all been in vain!!!?. Breed for gameness first and formost the rest can be added by knowing how to breed the right way, which will then up your %'s ,not every pup will have what your trying to add as any breeding is a gamble, but if your in it for the long haul as a breeder and you start with honest dogs your half way there. Its not rocket science but common sence ans a lt of patience

Im still saying Most dogs of today are better , as we have learned from the past dogmen & real new age dogmen has that knowledge from the past & has more time has past to re-evaluate & take a good look on where & how bloodlines are working out indeed the gave us the foundation on how to breed & condition dogs but their some new age serious dogmen i believe has even perfected it better that the ones from years past . still the credit goes to the dogmen of the past

 

In short I agree with most of what gorilla said ,but i still know a good few dogmen that are doing it right on both sides of the pond that are breeding some tight family dogs and having success with what they have. But most of the dogs have cur bred dogs in their pedigrees for that we can thank the peddlers and some of the good dogmen who over the years bred their stock to sell to any and everyone who wanted a fancy pedigree for big bucks.This dogs were then bred and sold,and i would say some ended up in the right hands and were bred and sold on.It just makes it harder to breed good stock from these type of dogs,as you need not only a true pedigree but a great dog as the two go together.
In my opinion when you start breeding for confirmation as in the breed standard that was set for these dogs you are breeding away from gameness and what the breed stands for as these dogs come in all shapes and sizes.You interbreed to get dogs to the set standard therefore many interbreed or line or family breed but forget one major thing ,for every good gene you breed towards so you will breed in every bad gene !!!! Many confirmation breeders do not know how to breed around family dogs which are the strongest and will produce good genes without adding the bad genes,as remember this once a bad gene is in the dogs and becomes heriditary it can never be taken out completely , it can be masked over but will raise its ugly head in maybe not the next generation but the one after and so on. To me game breeding and confirmation breeding end up creating two seperate breeds of dog, just as the same thing that happened with game dogs and the amstaff.

 

IMO Dogs today are better as in ability but dogs of yesteryear have more game. So which actually makes a better dog? Ever since dog fighting became illegal people have just been breeding lines of old game dogs cause how many real breeders actually put there dog to the test. And yes I no there are some but not everybody knows how game there breeding dogs really are.

I can agree with you if your talking about the neighborhood Pit Bull owner that hunts their dog but if your talking about real dogmen. Then I will have to disagree with you. The people I know have improved the breed through their breeding programs. Their dogs would walk through the dogs of yesterday because they used to own some of the famous dogs of yesterday and theirs have only gotten better. Which is scary, because if you go hunting with them your gonna be in for a really super long night.

I would take the dogs of yesteryear. I think the emphasis was always on gameness and today the breeding programs center more on mouth. Years ago the game was so much different. The steriods and the drugs have ruined the game just like pro sports.

 

thats what im saying. nowadays lots of people are breeding shit that should not even be breed cause the paperwork is pretty and then hiding behind the dog saying these are just for brood only, what a bunch of bs. those are not real dogmen
