Anyone ever try those barking collars? The ones that give the dog a jolt when they bark. Do they really work or are they not worth the risk. I see them at petsmart all of the time there are tons of them ranging from $40 to $100 or more.

My Dad Had Got A Beagle From The Pound And He Would Not Stop Barking So They Got Him One Of Those Collars And It Did Not Work He Just Kept Barking. But Every Dog Is Different.

Torture the dog into not barking.... The dog is barking for a reason. If you figure out the reason you will resolve the problem.

    My dogs bark when:

    A) mailman comes around (stereotypical but they HATE the guy... no clue why :D )
    B) they hear someone/something moving around the perimeter of the house/yard (usually at night)
    C) they get startled from dead sleep
    D) another dog is riling them all up

They usually settle down pretty well.

And some dogs bark out of boredom. It gives them something to do.

it works most of the time unless you have a tight inbred Chinaman bitch that is so scary she'll crap herself. She used to bark LITERALLY non stop.I put it on her and she went through the fence and tore it all to hell. Lol

I personally don't believe in them. My dogs bark, and it aggrivates me, but when I tell them to hush they generally listen. About the only time the bark is when they hear someone pull in the driveway. It's like my own little alarm system...lol...I go check it out, see everything is okay, and hush them. Works pretty well for me. Like I said, I personally don't believe in shock collars. The premise is no different than beating your dog into submission. They'll do it to avoid being hurt, but they will lose trust in you. I'd rather have a dog quit barking because he respects my wishes rather than he's scared he's gonna get shocked. JMHO.

    rocksteady I'll drink to that..

Think of it this way..how would you like to have one around your neck and get zapped everytime you spoke?

Something to think about, before investing in a shock collar. Not only do they activate by sound, by most also activate with movement. So a dog only has too shake or scratch an itch and it will get "shocked".

I havent used them and dont think I ever will. But I've got a question about barking I was meaning to post on a diffrent thread but this will work......got a dog that will bark continously on the chain, no matter what. I've been putting him out for short periods of time and playing with him so he realizes its a fun place to be, but as soon as I leave he barks non-stop. He wont move either, just sit there and bark. Now this is what he did in his kennel too.....until I put something in front of it so it was dark for him. Wondering what a solution to this problem is? I would much rather have him on a good chain outside where he can play while Im gone than couped up in a kennel but the neighbors are probably starting to get aggravated since it starts their dogs up. Any one have any ideas?

What do you do you do now when he does this? Just guessing........he has you trained to come and get him........after barking his head off for 15-30 mins? You are not punishing him by putting him on the chain, you are trying to give him more "freedom" rather then keep him in the kennel, right? But first you have to teach him that he will be fine there without you, because that is where YOU put him, and no matter how much he barks, you won't be coming out to get him until you are ready ........not him. He is trying to call the shots. Does that make sense?
But this is how I handled the same situation. (although my guy was upset about his outdoor kennel) He was placed in the kennel, given enough time to settle down (I probably held out a whole minute....lol) I approached the kennel, gave a firm NO and walk away.........no comforting, petting, etc. Of course that wasn't all..........I repeated this but giving lesser amounts of time between corrections. Finally it came down to me stepping into the kennel, grabing his collar and pulling him a down postion.....while telling him NO. That was it. The next day he barked once, twice all I did is look at him. When I read back over this, it sounds kinda harsh, but it was recommened to me by a trainner. I didn't know if I could be stern, I felt guilty that my pooch was unhappy away from me. But it only took that one time only, because he is so devoted to me. I became ALFA dog that day. haha

Sounds like your dog is barking for attention. I have one of those too. I'd like to say ignore him when he barks and eventually he'll stop, but so far it hasn't worked for mine.

I've become so used to barking, whining, and howling dogs that I'm basically oblivious to it. After awhile you learn to subconsciously determine which sounds require immediate attention, but other than that, I really don't even notice anymore.

I tried a collar on a young male I had, on a very low setting. Anyway, I had no good results at all. It didn't work. It just made him bark high pitched. And I am willing to bet that it was scaring the crap out of him, when he was just being a DOG, and doing DOG things ;). Somehow, when he barked at that high pitch the light would not come on (the one that lets you know that it is working.) I ended up giving it back to my friend. It just didn't work, and I felt REALLY bad using it.
I started crating him in a room by himself every time he'd start barking obnoxiously, and when I would take him and put him on his chain I would giving him his favorite toy (a pony jolly-ball) and it would keep him entertained and made him much happier being outside.

Thanks for the advice. However, when he barks, I do not go out there and get him. I started him off out there for about 5 minutes with me coming and going, and kept moving up the time slowly thinking he would adjust. He didnt. Now he stays out for 2-3 hours during the day and barks the whole time. I've tried telling him ''no'' firmly, he quits until I walk away. Then all hell breaks lose again. The barking doesnt really concern me, I can live with it. Its just the neighbors who Im sure arent liking it too much. Any more input would be appreciated. Thanks Teley and all others who have replied.

i had the same problem, and still do, my dogs are not allowed to bark AT ALL according to my neighbor.....he calls EVERY time they bark even just one time.......mine generally stop now when i tell them to....the only way to stop him is to let him stay on the chain and bark....everytime you go out to get him you tell him its ok to bark until you let him in because it WORKS he will not stop unless you ignore him.....go talk to your neighbors, ask them if it would be too much trouble for them to allow you to leave him on the chain for 24 hours, and let him bark....if you ignore him long enough he will figure out that it doesnt WORK any more and he will stop....NEVER go get him and let him in when he is barking, ONLY when he is quiet.
