  6. I gotta say people laughing at this are kind of pissing me off. I own birds and they are really fragile prey animals - they are not bulldogs that can take hours of damage and abuse to their body.

Birds go into shock very easily, are very fragile, and small injuries can be life threatening. They are not "game" animals (with the exception of roosters maybe, but I'm talking about the parrot/softbill family) and do not have an aggressive urge to fight. They are flock animals and want to bond with each other by nature. The only way I can think of to get these birds to fight is to put them in huge numbers in a very very tiny cage that way they start to argue over territory and mating.

If this article is true these people were literally torturing these birds. The APBT has been bred for years to fight, withstand pain, and take damage - these animals have not and are not game creatures that want to fight. By their very nature they are social animals that want to live with others of their species in large social flocks and they fight very little.

I've owned love birds, parakeets and an African Grey. Love birds will rip each other up, given the chance. They are nasty and mean. I had to keep mine separated, kind of like crate and rotate:) I don't know why they call them lovebirds. They are anything but that.

  10. Finches and canaries are society birds - they should generally live together happily and thrive in each others company. The way these folks got the finches to fight was by shoving over a hundred birds into a single small cage so they would fight over food and territory. Right now the rescue group that has them is pleading with the various bird clubs in my area for cages because the people who they were taken from had the birds all together in a tiny cage. They still need something like 60 more cages to be able to house the birds properly and comfortably. I actually got an email this morning asking if I had any spare cages.

This was not like putting two dogs in a large pit and giving them chances to leave or not fight. This was like shoving 50 dogs that like each other in a kennel together and forcing them to fight to stay alive (food, space, water).

There are certain species of birds that are more aggressive towards others - I own one of the most bird aggressive parrot species so I certainly understand that, but these birds mentioned above are known for enjoying living in societal groups. Aggression is seen during mating season, and they do get quite crazy and spiteful but if given enough room and housed right you shouldn't be having fights. They will fight if they have to - but they don't go out looking to bring down anything else with feathers.

I really hope these people were just really stupid breeders who shoved way too many birds in a cage together, and not that these people were really intentionally trying to fight canaries and finches. :(
