I moved into a new house and I'm alot further from work then I used to be. I will be away from home for 10hrs. a day. Since it's that long, I think I need to keep the dog outside. I've got a "pentagon" shaped pen with each side being 10'. I want to put a stake in the middle and have the chain length just a little more than the fence distance. Does this make sense? This way if she tries to dig under, only her head will make it, then she'll figure it out that she's not going anywhere. Am I on the right track?

I would also put up a outside camera. I don't trust people. I read too many stories about people stealing dogs. Maybe if a outside camera is seen, it might prevent someone from possibly stealing the dog.

If you haven't already, I would go out of my way to get to know my neighbors. If you have one you can trust, I would give them my work number and have them call you if there is a problem.

That way if something happens while you are away, they call you, not animal control.

Yeah, I live pretty far out of town. I'm on an acre, everybody else is on atleast four times that, so I'm not that worried about her getting stolen, but I do have extra locks and I know my neighbors. I might put my number on the kennel though just in case somebody (you never know who) needs to call me.

Um ok, I'm really not worried about someone stealing my dog in rural Indiana when I know my neighbors well. I'm guessing that some people on here wouldn't hesitate to steal a dog though.

I wouldn't want my dog to be able to get close to the fence. If something were to go wrong it might hang the dog.

if you have that much land and you are not worried about the dog getting stolen why don't you just put it on a chain spot. That is what i do with mine when i am gone an extended period of time.

I live in Montana. and ive known people that would steal the coat off your chair if you left for a drink if they wanted to. dont think that just cause youre in indiana youre dog wont get stolen. and the fact that you are isolated only helps potential thieves. they can watch you leave and know you'll be gone alllllll day....

I would have her on just a chain, but the neighbors Jack Russels come over into the yard sometimes and i don't want to risk something happening. I'm not trying to be argumentative, I just didn't think people would stake out my house for a scrappy little red dog with no papers. Maybe your'e all right, but don't a lot of people leave their dogs on chains?

i hope i did not come across as being a smartass. That was not my intention. I was just curious. I can understand the whole neighbors dog thing. EVen if it came wandering into your yard and on your dogs chain spot and ended up hurt or killed it would be your fault.

40lb - I keep my guys on chains in kennels. Do NOT let them even get to the fence. If they can reach the fence, fence fighting can occur. Plus, if they try to dig out, they can get their collar hooked on the fence & slip out, OR their chain can get hooked on the kennel & they can have a heatstroke.

As for people stealing your dog, yes, they will ESPECIALLY if it is a scappy dog. I've had folks stake out my place more than once trying to get my dogs knowing full well if they stole it, they'd get no papers. Papers don't matter to some folks, all they want is a dog they didn't have to pay for to make a few bucks in some fights or trade for some crack.
