Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by mud_slinger18, May 17, 2009.

  1. I just got my first pit.I originaly got him because thats what all my friend use to hog hunt with. Now that I have a pit im kinda scared to use him to hunt with.I was wondering how hunting would affect his behavior, because i have a one year old daughter and i dont want him to start getting really agressive. Also how old should he be before i start training him to hunt, he is only 4 months old now?

animal aggression and human aggression are not the same.

oh sorry, and dont ever every leave ur child alone with ur dog.

make it easier for ur self, get a chain set up and leave the dog outside. thats where dogs belong

  3. She doesnt really play with the dog,but if she happens to run up to him I dont want her to get hurt.
He is setup on a chain in the yard.I get him off when i get home and walk him with a leash. Then he gets put back on the chain. He doesnt roam free or come in the house.

talk to ur friends about when they start there dogs. hunting has nothing to do with the dogs behavior.

yeah ask your friends if their dogs behavior any different from non hunting dogs. same for game dogs . just because they fight dogs doesnt mean they will kill a child.

Socialize your pup with the family. Although you should never leave your dog alone with a child you should never have to worry about an APBT being (HA). He should crave attention from humans and you should nurture that. If you have any reason other than being suspicious because you are new to the breed get rid of the dog ASAP! Other than that give the pup a chance.

  8. I know I wasnt trying to be one of those people who stereo type pits, and Im sorry if it sounded like i was.I have grown up around them my whole life but this is my first one that I've owned, and I'm trying to learn all I can about them.

At about 9-10 monthes old , start taking him with your buddys and lead him into the bay when a small hog 50lbs or under is caught by another catchdog. Lead him by the collar , right up to the opposite ear that the other dog is caught on. Lead him up slowly and pet him up and hiss him as you do it. The hog will be squeeling and this will turn on a switch if he is ready. If he is pulling, wanting to get it, get him by the collar and place his mouth right within a foot or so of the ear, and when you feel him wanting it, let him go to catch the ear. It is important to get him to catch the ear the first time, as 3/4 of the catchdogs will always catch the rest of their life where they caught the first few times. If he catches on the jaw, this is acceptable also, but if he cathces anywhere else other than the ear or jaw, quickly break him off and go back to step one. Do this on a few small hogs, and gradually start to release him earlier each time. Never put him on a large mean hog until he gets alot of confidence and has several small hog catches under his belt. In between hunts work him on hog hides on a flirt pole or spring pole. Never work him on anything you dont want him to catch such as cow hides, or ropes, or old clothes after he has started catching.

The best hog dog I have ever seen loved my kids more than me. It should not change his feelings at all to your baby. Game dogs LOVE to hunt it is crule in my eyes NOT letting them have some outlet.

In my opinion you should have done your research before you got the dog. There are already way to many folks that dont know what they are doing with these dogs which is why they have the rep they have.
