Is my dog an APBT or a mix?

What do you think my dog is? Is he full terrier or mixed? I rescued him when he was 5 months old and the owners were clueless about the dog. They said that he was a terrier mixed with labrador or golden retriever. By the way he is 9 months now at 60 pounds.

Please guys I really need someone to help me. He has the worst dog agression, he cannot see another dog because he starts growling and trying to launch foward. He looses complete focus to anything I tell him. Generally he is a very calm dog around my cat and our male chihuhua puppy. The Chihuahua even takes his toys and jumps all over him and he is relaxed. Almost like he knows that he is a puppy and he is not threat to him. However, when we go on walks and gets a sight of another dog he starts to get agitated. His backhairs raise, his ears go straight up he starts moaning and soon it turns into growling. He is not afraid of any dog, any size, it doesn;t matter I try to move him away but his focus is on that dog alone.<HR style="COLOR: #d1d1e1; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #d1d1e1" SIZE=1>

I have seen different proportions and heard about the effects of neuturing at an early age. Isn't he a big leggy to be an ABPT? I neutured him at 5 months old maybe that is why he is a bit lanky?

Some of the best ones are lanky. They can dance.

He is also young so he may bulk up a bit which may make him seem less lanky.

  6. lookz apbt to me but i would say apbt Lab mix, but he lookz like an apbt. and that aggression is normal. its kinda what u get with the whole apbt package. but with proper training u can overcome that problem keep up the training. and chihuhuas r like little gangster lol. ur apbt is prolly scared of it the pup gets in his head.:) (lol joking)

    He is a pretty boy.
In my experience, early neutering will create a lankier/less filled out dog. It also seems to make DA worse. Because other dogs do not respect them as another male, they see them as a neutral or a female and are more likely to challenge them or try and dominate them. JMHO.
He looks very APBT, but he also reminds me of my friends APBT/Boxer mix.

If that is true that is a very interesting point you are making. My dog actually bit another dog and held on to the neck of my brother's in law amstaff. My dog gets super agitated everytime he sees him when they are together he wont leave the amstaff alone, but the amstaff keeps messing with him. Even after he got bit, the amstaff didn't care much and kept trying to roll my dog. That amstaff is about 82 punds but Pluto (my dog) does not seem to care. I wonder if there is any scientific studies backing up that statement?

The facts of the matter are:
No one here will be able to tell you what you have based on looks alone. Thats a bit impossible to say the least. I've seen dogs I would concider full blooded APBT and they turn out to be a mix. your dog may be pure or it may be an all american ( i think thats the proper term for mutts these days)

yea, me being naive when I first got him tried to bring him to a doggy day care and based on his looks they wouldnt allow him in their building. A second place gave him a shot but two months later got kicked out for fighting with a golden retriever. I promised my little buddy that he will always have a home and I would never neglect him like his first owner did. However, I really want to get another dog to work him out in my yard. My chihuhua is always chasing the cat and the cat is always chasing the chihuhua so they get a nice work out all night. My poor pluto just lays there chewing his bone boored. My brother just got an american bulldog pup so hopefully in a few months he will be big enough to play with Pluto. I know this site was based on the real game dog, but do you guys think a bluff dog would be a good playmate for him?

That is an accident waiting to happen. What are you doing when he is bored?
I am my dogs' best playmate. We run together, we bike together, we flirt pole, we play ball, we run treadmill (yes we have 2), etc. AND we have never played to rough and gotten out of hand, nor do we get into fights.
Get off of your @ss and do something with him.

He does look mostly pit, but what you are discribing is more aggression and less pit behavior...kind of. My pit is dead calm when he sees another dog from afar- if it would come into striking distance r.i.p. other dog-he goes crazy! Anyways, i'd say to really drain his energy and if he's more tired he'll be less likely to "act up" so hit him up with as much excersice as possible!!!;) Maybe even before you go out and see other dogs and if after excersicing him he sees another dog at least he'll be more mellow!

Well my dog is walked every morning with a doggy backpack with a 2 pound dumbell on each side for about a mile. In the evening I walk him until he poops then I make him sprint and go crazy in the yard for about 5 minutes and right after without rest I put him on the threadmill for about 15-20 minutes at 5.0 speed. We play tug of war but it is alwasy controlled by me, he must sit down and only until I say ok he can grab it. Also, when I want the game to end he sits down and lets me take the rope. I drain his energy everyday the same way. On the weekends we take him to the trails and he has a blast.

A dog will always be MORE crazy if he is bored just sitting around especially a pit dog cuz they were made to work for hours and go hard so if they don't get challenging exercise then they "act up" and attack lil kids and other dogs! Simply put. Plus give em chew toys(hides) they love to chew it's ingrained in them, and then lots of excercise-their is not a "too much" for one like yours, cuz you want him to behave.
I like mine a lil crazy-but i don't parade them in public either so-it's ok,as long as everyones(dog) stays out of the media!;)

While talking about exercising him, what other things can I do with him to drain his energy besides bike riding/jogging/threadmill?

  17. dragonpit

    dragonpit Big Dog

Well maybe hit up the morning with some biking instead thats what i do ;) or pull with him cuz everything that you said is light work -imo
Sounds like he needs harder work/ more intense. Intead of doing a "bunch" of things with him see what actually drains him and work on that!

I say put him on the spring pole (any kind of rope/ or large hide) and let him at it for a good 20-30 mins (hang it so his front feet are just off the ground and he has to work harder for it!) that is the warm up and then hit him up with some good weight pulling 10-15lbs to start with for the first few weeks and do that for 30mins to an hour followed by a walk or bike ride. THAT WILL DRAIN HIM...MORE! and he should be ok/better at least. and healthier too!

I def want to get him started on pulling but he is only 10 months old and I know that I have to wait until he is 18 months to get him started. I wouldnt want to hurt his joints because he is still growing=(

Oh sh!t I didn't realize he was so young....mybad!:D Well-anyone else with a crazy dog that is over a year Umm what i said above. And for you dave I guess just take the hell now and in 4 months unleash hell on the dog in excecise form.lol And also just do "drag weight, not full blown 2000lbs when pulling and that can be done at 12- 13 months of age. Good luck though!
