This is for the state of Virginia

Thought you might like to peruse the laws
    http://www.vdacs.virginia.gov/animals/dogs.shtml

This is where the actual list is:
    http://www.virginia.gov/vdacs_dd/pub...bin/public.cgi

If you select an area it will give you a list. For each dog listed' if you click on the 'more information' link it comes up with a file and you can select the tab for the dog for the type.

Interesting that it will say lab as primary and pit as secondary but will say pit mix as primary breed in some cases (found that under one of the Fairfax County dogs).

Might be an opportunity as a student project to do a study and create a list and break it down to see how discriminatory or not it is. I just wish they would include 'mug shots', weights etc so that knowledgable people could contest the breed category. Wonder if it would help the cause to request they add photos and weights?

Also, biting another animal can get it classified as dangerous .

Nice info. Is there one for every state?

    Nevermind.

What I don't get is that if animals are property, how is biting another animal 'dangerous'?

Also, how is 'pit mix' a primary breed?

  7. Banning specific breeds is never effective, as it simply drives breeding underground & does not target irresponsible/negligent owners, so a registry is the lesser to the two evils.

Any dog could bite, but poorly bred & genetically weak nerved/shy are the most likely to be fear biters. People who purchase purebreds then fail to train them or purchase a breed because they want a vicious beast of a dog by their side, contribute to the breeds bad reputation.

The blame for a bite incident should rest squarely on the shoulders of the owner for failing to ensure their dog was under control & a dog should only be euthanized it is human-aggressive & a poses real threat to the public.

I would want to know how easy it is for a dog to fall foul of the law & be placed on the register, where the burden of proof lies & the legal ramifications once a dog had been registered.

Breed bias is an inescapable fact of life, so by & large Dobermanns, GSD, Rottweilers ect are more likley to be considered aggressive than a Labrador in the in the minds of the people charged with reviewing the evidence, however unfair that may be.

Maybe it should be more correctly labeled a Dangerous Owners list, as a dog is only as dangerous as the owner allows it to be. The owners controls every aspect of their dogs enviroment including where it goes & whether or not it meets humans, dogs & other animals. A responsible dog owner ensures that there dog is always under control.

Some dogs are very dangerous for human like german shepherd. It takes the right kind of owner to properly handle any dog with a strong working, prey or fighting drive to keep it a good canine citizen. Any dog can be mean, but let's face it, you don't hear of too many out of control, aggressive Beagles.

Report of wild beagle attack raises eyebrows
(02/01/10) CALVERTON - East End residents are on the lookout following a weekend news report about a pack of wild beagles allegedly attacking a woman in Orient Point. The woman claims she was walking her own dogs when a pack of dogs chased them back into the house.
Animal experts say there are in fact wild beagles roaming around the East End. Pam Green, of the Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton, says these dogs are often abandoned by hunters and left to fend for themselves.
Town of Brookhaven officials say they haven’t seen any reports of beagles attacking residents other than the newspaper account.

i'll tell ya what i'm sick of people letting their dogs out the sliding glass door in their fenced backyard to bark at us and think about jumping the fence , i've had a dog and dogs just come from noware and just thinking about my dog i always grabed the collar and body of my dog and put him or her in the air turning away from the other animal I AM SICK OF IT if i didn't call myself the illinois ambassador of the american pitbull terrier if and when a dog jumps the fence beacause the dog/home owner wants trouble i'd just let go of the leash and give the owner what they insisted on ,, since i matured so much the past year i could never do or think such a horribale thaught like that

  15. In California, most, but not all counties require that vets inform the county with owner/dog information when they give rabies vax. I didn't use to mind that until CA law changed and indivual localities can have mandatory spay and neuter of specified breeds.

Why isn't there a dangerous owner data base ? I deliver mail for 20 years and always found the owner at fault _ not the dog

  17. Early one morning, my husband's cousin came over to go hunting with my son. He just walked straight in the house unannounced while we were all still in bed. My male bit him once on the forearm--purely a warning. A bandaid easily covered the two puncture wounds, but because his tetanus shot was not up to date, the cousin went to the ER, and things went downhill from there. By law, the ER was required to report the dog bite; then the Health Department and the County Animal Control Officer were involved. The whole thing turned into a circus and I ended up with a "dangerous" dog, although he reacted exactly the way I would want him to. These lists might be a starting point for designating dangerous dogs, but without fully specifying the particulars, should not be considered the end. I compare it with the 18 year old boy who is forever listed as a "sexual predator" because of his 17 year old girlfriend. Seems unfair to wear that label forever, especially when the bite happens to a home intruder.
