Its happened to me a couple of times and if no one is around to stop the dog before it gets near me it gets a size 14 in the face.

same here. If I wasn't carrying at that time for some reason, and I thought a dog would hurt me, I would let my dog handle bizness.May sound bad to some of the fainter of heart on here, but that is what they were created to do, and I would be doing it out of self defense, same as a gun.

I also remember I was walking my Male Female and a Dalmatian runs out the door
Barking, the Owners face was fear as she was calling her absolutely vicious dog
This dog come nose to nose with my female one quick nib on the nose to her dog and the Dalmatian walked away from situation some times I wonder what would happen if a dog like would run up to some one else with a cur dog who was just minding there business.

...of the extra money you can save on RAW if I you can get that mutt to the house.

..pick up the dog and pick a new route to walk..try walking early morning and late night...also see ABK post.

I walk my dog with harness, so i normal use the back part of the handle to hold my dog up onto its 2 back feet and try to keep the dog away(had this happen a few times with people taking there little dogs out to the bathroom that come charging up), if its a bigger dog and its just stalking my dog i try to just keep going and sometimes may make a loud noise or stomp or something to get the dog to leave but i wouldnt ever just let my dog go at a stray unless i know its another dog that is most likely looking for a fight (ie a stray pitbull, rott, or other dogs that people around here generally have thats dog aggressive -in my neighborhood-)

    Bwwwaaahahahahahahahahahaha

Non threat, my dog is downed and I punt. Possible threat I have a Red Devil - slip it right up my sleeve, gives a nice little jolt if need be, but before that, my dog is in a down I step in between mine and the on-comer and shout NO, keeps coming, it gets the devil. I generally avoid other dogs because no one likes mine anyway. It's laughable, mine are in a tight heel, and their mutts are pullin and barkin and lunging - yet I am getting the dirty looks....hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Im fortunate, the female I have right now is not interested in other dogs at all, unless its another bull terrier i.e staffords or pits, any other dog she completely ignores them [other breeds] but they seem to know not to bother her.

I've had others that would go for any animal regardless not just dogs [but not people], those are a nightmare imo.

currently my female of four y/o is a nicely balanced animal she shows no unwarranted aggression or any irrational kind of fear. my aim is to get my dogs to focus on me 1st priority.
Funny how she can make distinctions between xyz breeds and other bull terriers though.

jhappened to me on monday actually. i dont really care about the other dogs intentions because my dogs are NOT good with other dogs. I dont know anything about the other dog but i know about mine. I know this is NOT good. so i walk the other direction and kick at whatever dog is running up. I had one of my apbt and 2 apbt/am bulldog mixes jump on a neighbors bird-dog once. i had let them out to use the bathroom before work and it came on our property. that was a dumbass dog. everytime i got them off he would walk up to one to smell and get some more teeth in his ass. I was lucky the owner came looking and got his dog. Well the dog and his owner were lucky actually. But the thing is that as apbt owners they are always gonna find us at fault so its best to avoid these issues bc i would die if my dogs got taken away!

I only walk my dogs at times/places where there is only a .1% chance of any dogs being around.

In that 1 in a 1000 case, I usually use leashes that have snaps on each end(like a tree tie lead), so given enough distance, I would probably try to tether my dog to something and run the dog off before it got too close. If it suddenly appeared out of nowhere as you said(again, awareness and prevention are crucial to preventing this), then it could get interesting...

This happens to me alot theres plenty of people around here who just let thier dogs run freely but 9/10 times the other dog stops in its tracks and keeps it moving the one time the dog is feeling brave i do my best to get out of the situation theres no need to get some random jack russle killed its always the little dogs who get brave haha. What happens to me more often then loose dogs is people who want there dog to play with mine. I kindly tell them my dog has an attitude problem and keep it moving :D.

I know better than to walk my dogs in the city limits I live in, we drive south of down and walk the farm rds. if a stray comes up then it acceptable to defend against it even though where i walk them the only animals for miles are cows and wildlife. more peaceful that way and if we have to handle buissiness its ok (not that i want it to happen it any circumstance) cause that dog could have been worrying the cattle and would be shot anyway!

I was watching on the news here in North Carolina about two months ago and they covered the same question. They said that here in NC anyway that if you are walking your dog on a leash and a strange dog off leash comes at your dog aggressivly that your dog has the right to protect its self. I wouldnt recommend it but some time you can only do so much.
