I just recieved a bitch with a pedi I REALLY like, turns out she has demodectic mange. This is my first experience with red mange and seems like it could be a real pain in the a**. My question to everyone is, if you had a dog with a very desirable pedi to you would, is it worth it to breed her?

O.k., would you breed if the dog had desirable merits? It's just a general question to see if people would look past a health issue like that.

The ped should not be what's desirable about your dog. What type of time have you put in with this dog?Why did you get this dog? A ped only shows how it's bred and really says nothing about your dog personally. What can you say about your dog that says it should be bred.( this may come off as harsh to some but if a persons thinking is not as it should be.Then you will continue to have high tendenceies of these dogs going in to the wrong hands and ending up on the 11 oclock news.)A ped will never make a dog disirable, and if you think so then chances are you contribute to the wrong side of things.

Like RR said she her self should prove if she should be bred. I have had a few very "pretty" tight pedigree'd dogs turn up crap.....

and I will not breed a crap dog.. Don't care how fancy his ped is or who he's off of.

But if you were to breed her...

I'd only breed her one time and cull every female from birth.

That is how the Red Mange is passed on thru the female to pups. If a mouther has it her female pups will pass it on to their offspring. So its just better to nip it in the bud as early as possible. And if you were a good dog man honest to the dogs you'd spay the female after. JMHO

Mange to that point indicates a compromised immune system. So no, I would not breed a dog with a flaw like that.

The exception might be if the dog had mange due to being badly cared for and then only after the mange was cleared up and the dog was in good health.

No dog with on-going health problems should be bred, pregnancy on its own is hard enough.

So, no you should not overlook that issue.

This brings up question #2. What would you say to the person you got a dog with this condition from? Especially if you know for a fact that this dame had been bred numerous times before?

i would ask the person you got the dog from to make it right- another pup from a different breeding or something if you trust this person not to bone you. most people worth their salt would accomodate such a thing

It's good to hear that your are going to do the right thing with your dog and truth be told she's only a dog.Set your standard high and always be honest about every aspect about your dog weather it be over or under bite, mange or anything. And as far as the person you got her from, that should tell you something about the person right there, especially if they are aware and chances are they know and I will never deal with them again ever! And to put them on blast or post their name on boards is not a respectable thing to do.So just conduct yourself in a manor in which brings respect to yourself.

No, no, no. Breed to better/preserve the breed, or don't breed. Looking past a health issue is irresponsible.

i absolutely wouldn't breed that dog. while it does pass from mother to pups, that doesn't mean that the males in the litter won't get it. an old friend bought this pup (male) from some guy around middle,tn. i don't remember the city. he had the pup for a couple months, then at about 6 months old, the pup started losing his fur. he took him to 2 vets they both said the same thing, demodetic mange. soon as he showed me and i saw how wretched the dog looked, i told him to put the dog down. i've been told in young dogs it can appear until their immune system matures. in older dogs it's a sign of immune sytem problems, like cancer. that was not the case with this dog. after a few months and alot of money the dog declined to the point the only humane thing to do was put him down. if you get another dog from that guy i'd have it tested first. the guy who my friend got the dog knew what was going to happen and ignored my friend's calls. far as i know, he never got anything but a dead dog outta the deal.

My male pup had a fur issue. He got a few spots in his coat. They were pretty small and when we brought him to the vet they tested it and didn't find anything. I ended up putting some nu-stock on him and they went away. I haven't seen a spot on him since.

i would not. "Best to best". That means health wise as well.... I would not no matter how good a dog she was. JMO. Good luck with her.

I was actually very suprised what I heard. I figured everyone would say something like, that's the best bitch ever hell yeah I would breed her, put a little NuStock on it and put her in the game. That's the mentality I have gotten from some of the younger hog hunting generation around my parts. But yes I am getting my girl spayed, I wouldn't want to give someone a dog that might carry this problem because it can be a real burden depending on the serverity.

  20. Your question about what should you do or say to the previous owner:

You said she was bred several times. The Mange could be caused by a severe drop in immune system efficiency BECAUSE of her previous pregnancy. How long ago did she have a litter and how was she taken care of afterwards? She may have been a healthy, mange-free dog until she was bred by them, and then they gave her to you.

My answer about breeding her is simple - DONT DO IT for the dog's sake, DONT DO IT for the breed's sake, and DONT DO IT just because her papers have good dogs printed on them.
