Deworming?

First off my pup is six months old and he has all his shots and has been dewormed. I read on here that before a keep people deworm their dogs. I am not doing a keep with my dog but I was wondering why the deworming was done? Also I do feed half kibble half raw and I also read on here that people deworm if the dog is eating raw. Do I need to be doing this and if so what do I deworm for? Thanks in advance.

The reason you deworm a dog before a keep is twofold. The first reason is that certain kinds of worms can be transmitted rather easily. Even a dewormed dog can get worms fairly easily. Daily walking down the sidewalk or playing at the park can be common causes when your dog sniffs another's business. The second reason is that like all parasites, worms are hard on your animal. They drain nutrients your animal should be receiving. I deworm every couple of months. Another reason you can deworm is because the lifecycle of some worms is a few weeks. Some times at certain life stages, they aren't affected by the dewormers. That is why sometimes you should have a shedule that included multiple dewormings within a few weeks. I use and highly advise Drontal Plus or one of the alternatives that covers almost every parasite you need to treat for.

I got it overseas at an Australian distributor. I believe it was petshed.com if I remember correctly. I ordered a couple hundred doses because I had 13 dogs at the time. I still have a bottle full :)

In general, when we medicate monthly for worms, we use SAFE GUARD. Good ole' Tractor Supply! (lol) You can also find it at any livestock supply dealer.

The Safe Guard will treat whips, hooks, rounds AND tapes!!! We get the tube that is a single dose for a 1200 pound horse. The applicator has a dial on it that you can slide down and lock to admin doseage as needed. We have figured it out to be a nickles width is about a 70 pound dog. My advice is that you administer it 3 days in a row to treat tapes. And then a follow up in 2 weeks as I belive the gestation period on tapes larva is 7-14 days. Then you just admin once a month with your choice of heart worm preventative.

It is also sound in a caulk gun size tube (lol), but is MUCH harder to dose out for the dogs. The 1200 pound single dose tube will treat x32 45 pound dogs EASILY. The single dose is roughly 11 bucks!!!

yup this works,,,,also if you have cat litter boxes that the dog can get candy cat poop bars from you will need to worm for that too.

That's really good info for a 70 pound dog, but what about younger ones? I think he said his dog is 6 months. What about 6 week old pups. Any info on worming them? The reason I ask is my neighbor just had 10 pups. And for B, is that anything like Droncit?

My pup is 6 months but he is larger at 53 pounds. My dog doesn't have parasites that I know of, but like I said he eats Raw and he is around alot of other dogs about three times a week at OB class. I figured this would all be preventative.

Thanks for the great explanation Yardboy.

To be honest....I asked my Vet about a remark made when we purchased the Safe Guard at first. The supplier told me that even if you want to get lazy and give the dog a nickle width dose as mentioned above...That it is basicly a double dose for a 35 pound dog and that double doseage would not hurt the dog. There was a term that he used and I can't recall it therefore I don't want to just throw a word in it's place...But basicly he said that it runs right thru the dogs and not toxic. I CONFIRMED this with my Vet. So to be honest....IF one wants to med puppies...One could easily take a nickle width dosage and divide it 4 ways and you will have a dosage for x4 16lb pups. So that would be a safe double dosage for pups.

Boston Bully....Just to clarify something real quick..... This method is NOT a PREVENTATIVE. I mean it's a med that will cure the issue. So in a sense the correct term would be PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE. I mean the only thing we a preventing is the possibility for eggs/larve to hatch and cause a need for medicating. Understand me better?

I mean you can pick the parasites up anywhere therefore we can't control the issues. But by maintaining a pattern of adminning meds...We have a cocked and loaded arsenal on our team. So IF your dog does pick up the parasites, we would never really know as they stand no chance against the defense we installed. Am I making sense? (lol)

I think I do. It doesn't prevent the dog from getting the parasites but if they did get them because we do a regular regiment of deworming it would kill whatever they picked up. I know it wont prevent them from getting parasites.
