Best way that ive found to start a pup out is to get a small hog 60 lbs or so get a dog that already nows the drill "has caught hogs before" let the older dog catch while the pups watch this should get the pups fired up if they have any kind of drive what so ever then turn them lose they should catch.I lways make sure if they dont grab the ear to set them on there manualy this is the best place the dog can grab a hog its easy for them to get and it does the least amount of damage to the hog incase the hog isnt what your looking for and you decide to turn him lose plus the first place they catch is usally where they will always try to catch after that and you dont want a leg dog when it comes to catching hogs

Alot of Hunting with dog's goes on where I live. Here the hog's come right up in people's yards, and root up around their house's. I've been on several hunt's myself. I've seen dogs cut pretty bad. Even seen a few get gutted, and live. But, Then I've also seen'em not get a scratch and die.

Marty....THANK YOU! You made a VERY good point! 99% of dogs that get hurt in the field are dogs that are NOT protected. Sometimes one may feel that the 60-150 dollars they can spend on protection (in general and/or combinations) is a lil' steep and/or not needed as they have not yet seen/experienced/witnessed THEIR own or a partner that has had to stich one up or stuf ones intestines back in 'em and do your damdest to successfully recover your dog. So they go out in the field unprotected.

In our own experiences, we have used cut collars and cut vests together. We have even had a comination collar vest that works extremely well. However, we tended to drift back to just the 2 in team as the dog can still manuever to itsfullest potential without the restraint of a single piece that can limit movement at times depending on how much your catch dog works the hog to submission. BUT...Regardless that $100+ investment will pay for itself time and time again. Especially when your catch snatches up a hog that's more rank than the dog that caught it. All it takes is one re-grip or one slipped bite on a wet/muddy hog...And that's all she wrote!

JamesT....VERY CORRECT! That is THE best way to train a dog to do anything. Too mnay times we want to be God and make decisions and make a dog do something that it simply can not cut. We are all guilty of that! Some dogs get right in and get er did, some work well for others and some not so well for others. The best way to get any dog in the groove is to simply put the dog in the environment and let the aplha dogs put that pup in it's place. Let natural occurances be natural. Step in to break a dog loose for a re-catch when needed as like ya said legs are off limits. Usually...We use this method with anything we TRY to train. Throw the pup with a veteran, let it become one with that alpha, and between the 2 of them rules are made, actions have reactions and soon that pup has a general idea and just needs positive reinforcement when acting how we prefer.

There are alot of clips/videos/movies on-line if ya have the patience to search/click on and view every link. (lol) I ordered some DVD's from an outfit that does guided hunts and the such just because what I found on line pertaining to them made me proud. Take a peek at Dan Moody.

And for those who don't know and interested in gettin in the field....IF you think a hogg can't swim, let the bay hold em so tight that the hog has no choice but to retreat in the water and you will very likely be suprised to see that hog swim like an olympian athlete all while trying to catch your dogs to drown them.

The key to SUCCESSFUL hunts is much like wrestling....TAG TEAM. The dog is gonna work regardless! But you have to have it's back.

ALWAYS use protection! ALWAYS know when to jump in to help your partner and know when to pull your partner out. ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings despite the amount of adreniline pumping thru your veins or how astonished you may get watching that dog work. ALWAYS carry a BIG SHARP knife....Stick and twist repeatedly. BLACK HAWG DOWN ! ! !
