Well my daughter took Xena to the park yesterday. When they got home Xena was had red on her belly, around her eyes and mouth and on her paws. Well my wife was pretty worried so I took her to the vet today. They gave us some meds along with telling me to pick up some Benadryl. I joked with my wife about giving her the Benadryl last night. I was suprised when she told me it was ok to give it to them, 1mg per pound.
Anyone else out there who's pooch has allergies? How did the dog respond and how are they doing?

A dog of mine had an allergic reaction to a piece of cheese with some peppers in it. I woke up in the morning and went what the heck: his testicles morphed into a grapefruit sized single testicle, and he was covered with 1 inch lumps, with runny eyes, and itchy. The dog was 57lbs so I gave him 37.5 mg of benadryl at 12 hours apart for three days. He was really mellow and not bouncing of the walls, which was cool, and his lumps went away etc. I checked with a vet beforehand, however.

Benadryl is an antihistamine, and histamines are released in an allergic reaction, so . . . . benadryl works great. A severe allergic reaction may cause the airway to shut down. So you need to monitor the dog to make sure that it is not having difficulty breathing. Also if your dog eats too much benadryl it may stop breathing, because in large doses benadryl causes respiratory depression.

Benadryl is a safe drug for your canine friends & can even be a lifesaver in some cases. Pit Blldg wrote some good info so I will not restate his post. The dosage of Benadryl is 1-2 mg per lb of body weight but always try the low dose first. In some dogs, Benadryl will cause drowsiness, but not in all so don't be alarmed if the hives are gone off your dog but he still wants to play. Also, it is ok to use the Wal-Mart brand or whatever brand of Diphenhydramine (aka Benadryl). It'll save you a couple of bucks. :)

Benadryl works great, and a handy product to keep on hand, just in case. We had a dog get into a batch of hornets one time and used Benadryl to help with th swelling and other reactions..

    Very informative posts!

i have been wondering the proper dose of benadryl for a while now....my vet wouldnt tell me over the phone, so i had to guess based on the human dose of 25 to 50 mg total. it works great. the dose for dogs is basically the same as it is for humans with the 50 mg being intended for those at 100 pounds or more. as was said before though always try the low dose first.

use it here also. took one of my females to get cropped and asked the vet if the red skin over her eyelid was cherry eye. he said no and told me to give her benadryl.

Doctor didn't say at what age but did say dose went by weight, 1mg per pound, and every 6 hours like on the box. Xena is 20 week old. Give your vet a call he might tell you over the phone.

I had a pup have an apparent allergic reaction to some wormer that got on his muzzle. We called the vet, and while I don't remember what the dosage was, he advised we use Benadryl. Like I said, I don't recall the dosage, but the pup was around 7 or 8 weeks old I believe. Hope this helps.

Gremlin Has Seasonal Allergies. I For Got What It Was Called But The Vet Gave Us Some Pills Too And Told Me To Get Him Some Omega3 Fatty Acids. So I Got Him Some Cod Liver Oil And Give I Teaspoon A Day Along With His Ben. I Gave Him These Things Every Day For About Two Months Maybe A Lil Longer. One Decided To Take Him Off Of It And He Has Had No Problem Since. I Still Give Him The Codliver Oil.
