use a body harness and swim em if you can. I walk my boy everyday so handwalking is great. My dog loves finding a stick and then wont let go of it, so I just chase his ass around on this grass hill till i get tired, he loves that. You can go into an open area with a long lead, for every mile you walk your dog does double since he isnt just going in a straight line. You can have him drag some chains, tie a rope to his collar 2-3ft then a chain to the end of that have him drag it round. Just make sure hes old enough to start this type of work.

I wouldn't advise letting the dog drag weight via his neck.

I cannot take my girl swimming (or I would), nor is an open field an option, so I hand walk her, have her work her springpole for about 15 minutes at a time, do flirtpole for about 10 minutes at a time (usually twice a day), and then we play fetch.

    Bike 5-10 miles 2-3 times a week
20 minutes swimming (hard) each time biked
1-2 hours of springpole a day
Flirt when I have the time (once a week)

a 10lb chain attached to a 3ft rope to the dog collar will not strain anything just a good workout.

  7. I like short/medium sprints uphill. I will stand at the top of a steep hill while my wife is at the bottom. Start the dog at the bottom and call them up to daddy :) they come full sprint and then I throw a ball back down to mommy. they take off full sprint.....sometimes they take a digger from going to fast...but they are resilient dogs. :D Its builds good muscle tone and doesn't take too much time. Not great for overall endurance though....if that's what you're after.

I just want to put this out there for any who might be wanting to work their dog out: If you have a dog that isn't used to heavy workouts, but you want to get your dog conditioned, do not start out heavy. Start out hand-walking. Do light flirtpole work, no more than 5 minutes at a time, no more than twice a day.
Gradually build your dog's muscles up through light workouts; get him/her used to being worked out before you add springpole or other strenuous exercises.

You can damage a dog's muscles and joints by going from zero to a heavy workout without any gradual build up to that point.
It is the best advice that was given to me when I wanted to start working Ella out.

I enjoy a nice walk with the dogs. If it's not too hot out, I like to take them for a hike in the mts. That is their main exercise.

Minor exercises are flirt pole and playing fetch.

If I had a pond or lake, I would definitely like to get them to swim, but not an option at this time unfortunately.

Having a little fun now Thevictor22

My dogs loves bike riding with the exception of the damn velco straps on her paws and the make shift mitts with the stuffed thumb holes.

Swimming is her favorite excercise.. The back stroke

Till working on the springpole concept

She's got the flirt thing figured out, caught her humping the preachers leg yesterday while she licked her lips

    LOL just having fun

    Flirt pole, sprints, treadmill.

That's all I pretty much use with some warm-up/cool down walks. And maybe 1x/week weight pulling.

how about a 2" collar, 10ft lead, a pair of New Balance and hitting the road.

I never understood how so many owners are so obese and their dogs in such great shape, put the mills in the garage and hit the road

I do lots of handwalking, running beside my bike, flirtpole (one of the best exercise if you ask me). Start slow and work them up! specialy when a dog is never conditioned. The dog has to be in good health when you start working him( no worms/fleas etc.) Be sure that the dog has a great time when working and give him restdays when he needs it. Rub the dog down after workout and check the paws daily.

That's not always the case. I know many people who hand walk their dogs, and still remain obese, while their dogs get in shape. I think it has a lot more to do with their diet than their activity level.

I think handwalking is good. But I also think it's highly overrated. What good does it do when the dog can outwalk the person on the other end of the leash? It'll never reach it's full potential. It's a good exercise to keep the dog in a healthy state, but as a working method I think there's better. I use handwalking as a warm up/cool down, or to spend some time with my dog on off days.
