    Here's what they sent them:

Hi, I just wanted to let you guys know that I tried a bag of the new "formula" and was dissatisfied. My dog still loved it, and ate it up right away as always, however, his stools began to be too soft. So much that it would smush up when I would pick it up. I noticed the difference in quality from the moment I opened the bag. The original was dark colored, and with this new formula, it became light brown and even smelled different. When I smelled it, it resembled Iams, and we all know what type of quality they put into their food.

So I have to say that although you guys are keeping things real hush hush about Diamond, you certainly couldn't hide it in your product. I thank you for providing a good quality food for the 1st 7 months of my puppy's life, but am sad to say that I will now look elsewhere for the quality of food that you use to provide.

    Sincerely,
    Nestor S.

    And here's their response:

    Dear Nestor,

Our production partnership with Diamond Pet Foods has already surpassed future AAFCO and FDA standards. By meeting the newer pre-process and post-process monitoring guidelines with state of the art equipment and procedures, our partnership has enabled us to produce a safer, higher quality product with specific procedures in place to assure the health and well being of your pet.

To assure the safety of our products, CANIDAE has strict protocols which require that all formulas are tested in-line during our production runs, and cleared by a second supervisor every 30 minutes. Additionally, there are 141 ingredient tests and 10 finished product tests. We at CANIDAE understand the level of trust that you have come to expect from us and our products and it is our responsibility and commitment to deliver on that trust!

Now with three production facilitates we are also able to cut down on pollution, fuel consumption, carbon emissions, as well as many other positive environmental impacts. In addition to these environmental improvements, these changes also dramatically reduce our freight costs and reduce transit times, enabling even fresher products.

CANIDAE is committed to providing the highest standard of excellence for nutritional benefit, palatability, and customer satisfaction.

Dogs digestive systems become accustomed to digesting the same formula, and dogs due best when the diet is consistent. When you feed your dog another formula, or in the instance where we made slight changes, a Biological Acclimation within your dog must occur. Each dog will react differently when this acclimation occurs. Most dogs have no issues at all acclimating, while a slight percentage may experience loose stools. It is always best to mix your old food with a new diet over several days however this isn’t always possible. In this instance reduce the intake and increase the feedings per day with smaller portions to help speed up the adjustment period if your dog is overly sensitive to diet change. If you are among the few that are having a transitional issue we greatly apologize.

Please realize we wouldn’t have gone through these changes if we weren’t making a better product. We are confident you will see the improvements once you are on our products and realize it’s our commitment to provide you a super high quality consistent diet your dog can thrive on.

Advances in nutritional pet information are constantly evolving. With this improved data, and after broad-spectrum analysis of all ingredients, as well as extensive feed testing, CANIDAE is providing the most nutritious, all natural, palatable products in the marketplace today.

All CANIDAE formulations have increased levels of meat protein and lowered diversified carbohydrates. With more meat and less carbs, we have nutritionally increased overall complex carbohydrate quality!

Well I started to feed my dog Purina Lamb and Rice and they are doin very well with that. Hey Marty what's your take on adding some cooked ground turkey in their food?

Turkey is naturally low in fat without the skin, containing only 1 gram of fat per ounce of flesh. A 5-ounce serving provides almost half of the recommended
daily allowance of folic acid, and is a good source of vitamins B,
B1,B6, zinc and potassium. These nutrients have been found to keep blood cholesterol down, protect against birth defects, cancer and heart disease, aid in
nerve function and growth, boost the immune system, regulate blood pressure, and assist in healing processes.
For those watching their fat intake, stick to white turkey meat. Bake, broil, or sauté in as little oil as possible, using broth, lemon, or orange juice as
    a basting sauce.

Turkey is an excellent source of lean protein. One serving of turkey provides more than half your body's protein requirement, with half the fat of beef
    and 30% fewer calories.

Protein is an essential building block for your bodies. The protein in turkey is lean and low in calories, making it an excellent healthy food choice.
Selenium has been shown to inhibit cancer development, improve the immune system, and aid in the metabolism of our thyroid hormone. Each serving of turkey
contains almost half of the body's requirement for selenium.
The B Vitamin niacin in turkey is a cancer preventer as well. Niacin also helps convert elements of the food we eat into the energy our bodies run on.
Vitamin B6 also aids in energy production by helping to process carbohydrates.
Niacin and Vitamin B6 prevent the accumulation of homocysteine in our body. High levels of homocysteine damage blood vessels and significantly increase our
risk for heart disease. So turkey is very heart healthy.
The facts about turkey point to a simple conclusion - turkey is a "super" food and one we should cook up more often.
The availability of turkey pieces, boneless turkey breasts, turkey cutlets and ground turkey make including this nutritious food in our menus an easy choice.

Turkey is a very good source of the trace mineral, selenium. Selenium is of fundamental importance to human health. It is an essential component of several
major metabolic pathways, including thyroid hormone metabolism, antioxidant defense systems, and immune function. Accumulated evidence from prospective studies,
intervention trials and studies on animal models of cancer have suggested a strong inverse correlation between selenium intake and cancer incidence.

This is a little research i did.

You can pick up some raw turkey necks, or turkey legs and wings really cheap at a local meat house - try in the vacinity of .69 - .79 per lb. Give it to em' as nature intended and you will be getting the most for your money!

I know I am not to happy about the change, the dogs eat it anyways however they are not the ones who pick up the shit in the yard. I agree with whoever wrote the letter, the stool is pretty loose still and this is after 2 months of feeding it so I am not buying into them getting use to it before it hardens up.

The cost also went up and if I am going to be charged more money then I might as well switch back to TimberWolf. Atleast with the TW thier shit is hard as rocks and there are only a few chunks when they go, yea I think I am switching back.

I am pretty sure that TW also changed their formula. I have been feeding Wellness Core which is grain free its pretty much the same price as TW and I have had some good results with it.

We were interested in the Wellness Core, but there are some weird distribution issues in this area. My old man works for a local chain, and they like to tell the stores what they will and wont stock. So no Wellness Core -- you can get cat food, but not dog food. None of the new 44 lb bags of Canidae. I had to hunt down via the 'Net and phone calls someone who stocks the Nature's Variety kennel packs. $56 for a bag of food is high for us, but at least its 50 lbs and will last a while. And no more yellow soft serve in my yard.

  17. does anyone feed V.F. or Apex

For over 7 years I have fed Canidae, and was one of the most vocal proponents of this feed all the while, because of the dramatic positive effect I saw time and again on my dogs while feeding it. It truly was the best-quality food for the price of any brand available, with all human-grade ingredients, and with 7 out of the first 10 of those ingredients being meat and fat sources. Simply put, no other kibbled dog food product could compare, especially for the price.

However, the company's integrity has unfortunately taken a nose dive. Their product has gone up by $0.30/lb, the quantity has diminished per-bag, and worst of all the once-great quality of their kibble has been dramatically-reduced. Now, only 3 out of the first 10 ingredients are meat sources, with the other 7 ingredients being rice and other carbs, and 0 fat sources.

The link posted above is showing that many loyal customers to Canidae have been experiencing negative health consequences to their dogs, not realizing the formula has just changed, and when they have called Canidae they have been treated rudely. None of this really affects me, as I feed my own home-made raw diets, but I have been such an active proponent of this food for so long, I feel a duty to inform those who have listened to me in the past of this new ingredients change by Canidae, which has caused the quality of their dogfood to take a dramatic nose-dive for the worst.

I will give any truly good product my enthusiastic support, but I will never support anything I don't believe in if it later turns to shit. And sadly, what I have believed for years to be the best kibble money could buy has now turned to over-priced shit, and so I wanted everyone to know my position on this, which is that I no longer support this product.
