Its the same with any working dog as it is with bulldogs... its the man behind the breedings. If you run a solid program with GSD's only breed dogs proven in their line of work... and I just breed two together because they are the same breed and to have pups... whos gonna have the higher percentage of animals able to perform? Both are "GSD's" but are they the same dog? Can you judge the breeds work ethic based on my dogs? And if you did get a good dog from me... you probably got lucky. As you did with the crazy mix. thats no reason to recommend mutts lol just my opinion though.

I like the Fila Brasileiro. My friend had one that would get on top of any car that drove down his road and sit there until he was called off. It was very Cujo style. It was good with his family. It did have some DA too. Anyway, he ended up having it pts to avoid litigation after it killed his ranch partners bull.

Chump, did your friend have one of those exotic mini Filas?

A full grown fila is up to and over 70kgs for males. i highly doubt that it would jump on any car roof without denting the shit out of it, or at least the bonnet and or boot on its way up.
And if the fila was on the roof how is it to see the intended victim? It cant which goes against everything a fila is breed for.

South African Boerboel : I am suprised nobody mentioned these dogs. My neighbor has one and I know for a fact no one gets on his property without permission. He raises horses exspensive horses.;)

I mentioned them..... cuz i have one. best damn guard dog IMO. no one gets past mine if she knows they're not supposed to be there...

  6. In terms of a dog whose size will scare the shit out of people, as will the bark, and will alert you to when some mo fo gets in your yard, Saint Bernard. The one I've got now, man, she can hear people coming from blocks away, and scares the shit out of people when she barrels at the fence bellowing (I'm amazed that big bitch hasn't brought it down yet).

Plus she's been around A LOT of DA dogs in her life, and they don't even bat an eye at her since she keeps to herself. As does my friend's male Saint who lives with her DA shepherd/Rott mix. Something about their personality, size, and the fact that they know they can snap a dog's spine with a paw or break a human's bones and they know when to throw their weight around. They tend to avoid trouble with other dogs. Also one of the most loyal breeds, as you want that in a dog that's protecting your shit. If you've got kids, they're great with them.

Aside from her, I like my Rottie. He's still a pup, but he's already got his guardian thing down. Little bastard won't let anyone come within 20 feet of me if it's getting dark out and we're still out walking, and sounds like a damn demon when people get too close.

The combination of him and the big bitch is pretty formidable if you ask me.

  7. ROFL.

Someone called my boy a "Rockweiler" once... I'd never heard that before then. One of the joys of living in the ghetto.

  8. The Akita probably is out - they often are only tolerant of dogs of the opposite sex. They tend to be DA towards same sex dogs. You might come home to a dead guard dog if you did that.

Akitas are the most dog dominant breed I've ever seen. I wouldn't say bulldogs are really dog dominant they just like to fight ha. Our old Akita was ok with little dogs but any dog near his size, it was back down or go down. He was a nightmare, you couldn't let him off the leash he would run half a mile to get to a dog. Our new Akita is ok with dogs though

  10. I have two geese--male brothers from the same clutch--who have run more than one person back into their vehicle.

One toughguy thought he was going to punt them like a football, but got a reminder that birds have wings and can fly and learned how much it hurts to have a bird with a six foot wingspan whack you upside the head.

I think that my Great Dane is probably the exception rather than the rule, but she is an exceptional watch dog, with the added bonus that if a person isn't leery of her and doesn't seem 'hinky' to her, she's pretty friendly. She's also an absolute mush pile around kids, even though we don't have any, she adores them. I will say that even though Danes don't have a reputation of being mean, most people think twice before going in with one just because of their size, and they most definitely have a scary bark.

ive worked in corrections in the past and all the k9 officers swear by the malinois. ive seen them in action against a man and they are impressive. very smart, very brave...all around good dog.

Malinois make great patrol dogs...but IMO there are MUCH better candidates for home or PP work. K9 officers need a dog that is highly transportable. Home and PP dogs don't need to be as portable...able to ride in an automobile 8 hours a day 5 days a week like a patrol dog (a 60-70#er is more suitable to a handler for such portability than is a 100-120#er)...while a PP dog needs to have an ability to STOP a criminal in his tracks and should be able to do so unassisted...meaning a PP dog should be able to stop a man without the soon to follow aid of a trained professional officer.

I would like to see some good boerboels actually do some serious PP work with enough follow through in them to be considered reliable enough to finish the job. I have worked a few and I have seen some with prey, others with defense, but few have balanced well enough for my liking.

That is what I like to hear, got me a Johnson type pup a few months back. I like what I heard about them, guess we will see if it is true.

as with APBT, you have to look carefully who you buy from. a doberman from a breeder that targets conformation shows wont be the same as one bred for guardian, protection etc.

South African Boerboel is supposed to be the only dog on the planet that only exists to guard. They show guarding instincts for the family at 3 mths old.

I know a woman who`s son (American) has a protection business in Kenya. He sells his dogs fully trained for $25,000-$30,000 each. His prefered breeds are German, Belgian, and Dutch Shepherds. Dutch are No.1 and he has a pair accompany his 4 yr old twins to school everyday. Saying that, protection dogs are a lot different to guard dogs and he does have Rhodesians for outside the house. I would think this guy know`s his stuff.

The Mastiff and St Bernard blood in the Johnson type AB makes them pretty good guard dogs, they get pissed off quick and stay mad for ages lol

    Hey guys......how's every one doing?

I am currently in search for a "real", "WORKING" guard dog to protect my family/property.

I am looking at a generally healthy breed that has "natural" protective insticnts that can work well if they are in a pack of 2-3.

So far I am considering (in this order):
    1) Caucasian Ov. (sp)
    2) German Sherpard
    3) Bel. Malinois
    4) Doberman

For the most part, I have done ALL research on the caucasian and feel very confident in finding what I want from a certain breeder in America.

But, like most breeders in America, 95% of them seem to only be breeding for size/looks but absolutely no action!

So, can you guys direct me where I can find true working Shepards, Malinois and Dobermans in America?

Also, for those that ACTUALLY FEED/HAVE any of these breeds can you please give me your experience with them when it comes to guarding/protecting your family and property?

    Thank you.
